Q about smoking on ships

Hopefully someone can let me know about how much smoking I can reasonably encounter on board. I have no problem with people smoking in general--I just avoid them. Unfortunately, I get migraines from too much second hand smoke and I can't see spending my vacation in pain, in my cabin, in complete darkness waiting for a migraine to pass. Obviously, I would avoid smoky casinos and bars if smoking is allowed, but what about the other public areas? I am looking at RC FOS or possibly Carnival Dream next summer, but some friends took a Carnival cruise from Galveston over spring break this year and they thought there were lots of smokers. My family is dying to try a cruise next summer; my hubby and I went on our last cruise 18 1/2 years ago, so that's not relevant any more!

Thanks in advance for anyone's comments.

I live in Los Angeles, where smoking is pretty much banned everywhere, so I'm pretty sensitive to smelling it. It has never been a problem on any of the cruises I've been on. There is usually (always?) one side on public decks for smokers and one side for non-smokers, so it's easy enough to choose your side. I've never noticed it in cabin areas (though I have read complaints from CC'ers with balconies that sometimes sitting on a balcony means smelling smoke because passengers in the cabins around you can be smoking.

Best,

Mia

I've been on one Carnival cruise and 4 RCCL. I found the smell of smoke to be more prevalent on Carnival, due to the layout of the ship. RCCL bans smoking in its staterooms, but not on the balconies. There is smoking allowed in the casino and one side of the pool deck as well as a few other designated areas. I'm pretty sensitive to smoke. It bothered me slightly on Carnival and I barely noticed it on RCCL.

Have you looked at Celebrity? They are mostly smoke-free.

Some of the lines have banned smoking in the casino on formal nights because people don't want their good clothes to smell like smoke. Other than the one side of the open public decks and probably a cigar bar even the bars are non-smoking. I do not like smoking either and have not found it a problem except in the casino. Since I'm a gambler I somehow brave that - LOL

We've never been unduly bothered by smokers....in one of the bars, there will be a "smoking" area, so we don't sit there....and, perhaps, at times, in the casino, you may have smoke, but on the outside decks, the wind will whip away any lingering smoke before you know it.

You won't have to "avoid" too much.
