ever receive compensation for missed ports?

On the just ended British Isles trip on the Crown, one port was delayed several hours so the majority of the shore excursions were missed (left port a little late, low tide, strong winds--2 tug boats & the ship's thruster's couldn't get us out). The second port was missed entirely--due to Hurricane Danny and the winds; however, for some reason it was not reported as such on BBC.

Haven't they offered some sort of compensation on other trips when this has happened? There were lots of angry and truly disappointed people on this trip--especially so many older passengers wanting to see Normandy. From the captain's broadcast, the surveys were not "excellent".

Is it worth writing a letter about? Thanks.

Probably not. The only thing you should expect is a refund of port charges. If you read the contract, the Captain has the right to change the itinerary.

Actually YES, on our CB cruise on Aug 22nd we missed Newport due to Hurricane Bill. On our accounts we received approx. $15 back per person for port fees and such. It wasn't much but you know what, it was something. They could have kept that $15 pp for all 3100 on board and made a pretty penny. No sure if they are obligated to return it but I was sure happy to see it.

I agree with Paul, we have missed several ports because of weather related problems and all we have received back were the port charges. Sometimes as little as only a few dollars, other times more.

Princess will rarely compensate passengers for a weather related issue when it comes to missing a port. We missed Mykonos just over a year ago, and we weren't even refunded the port charges, let alone compensation of any kind.

I have received a $100 credit when we missed a port due to mechanical problems, but not for weather related misses, just the port fees and a refund of our excursions in that case.

That is logical. Princess are not in charge of the weather and the contract clearly states that the itinerary may change. It always entertains me to see the long line of angry people standing at the pursers desk to demand compensation for something that the pursers can do nothing about (even if they did have god like status). I can understand disappointment but not angry.

We missed Princess Cays because of rough seas and we each received around $15 refund for port fees. You should always receive some credit for a missed port.

We couldn't get into Princess Cays last year because of weather and I believe we received about $10 each credit.

We missed three ports when we were on the Regal Princess down in South America back in 2006. One was the Falkland Islands which was the biggest disappointment but the weather was impossible to tender. We didn't receive anything back for that port as it obviously doesn't cost anything to tender but for the other two - Puerto Madryn and Porto Chacabuco - our Port Charges were refunded.

On the Regal, round trip L.A. to Hawii, 2006, we missed a port due to the weather and we were refunded $50 each in cash. We just sailed back to Lahaina, which we liked a lot anyway. ...The cruise was perfect with nice weather most of the time, great table mates, very good food, wonderful wait staff and a terrific CD (can't remember his name).

Hi Jennie,

Haven't heard from you much lately. Have you been on a cruise?

We missed a port and had another stay shortened by CB engine issues two summers ago. They offered nothing while we were onboard but a little persistence in emails resulted in a $75 credit for each of us on our cruise a year later.

we were on the Star princess April-May 2009 headed to Mexico Rviera for a 10 day cruise. unfortunately we missed every port due to the pandemic. We ended up going to san Diego, Santa Barbra, Catalina, & San Pedro, not in that order.Princess was gracious enough to reimburse us half of the price of our cruise and all port taxes in a future cruise credit. We are now in the planning of our Hawaii cruise. Princess also set us up with free bus transportation in port. I thought that was really nice considering they didn't have to do that. We will stick with Princess! If your just late getting into a port, you will not receive anything.:D

We missed a port on a Western Caribbean cruise with Princess due to mechanical problems - got $75 pp onboard credit, and spent a delightful day in another port. Of course some people complained - can't satisfy everyone. We were very happy with the solution that Princess came up with.:)

Your answer was technically, "No" as you received the port fees you'd already paid, not compensation.

This was an extremely unusual circumstance with a complete itinerary change; not just a missed port. They didn't have to but they did compensate the passengers very nicely.

If it's the ship's fault, i.e., mechanical issues, you will get some compensation beyond the port fees.

The bottom line is that for missed ports, you will receive only a refund of the fees for that port. The amount of the refund is dependent on the amount of the fee, which is different for each port.

For the OP, sorry you missed the port but there's absolutely NOTHING the Captain or ship can do if wind, weather or tides prevent him from leaving the pier or docking. What would those who were disappointed have him do? Risk the ship and passenger's lives? You can write but the cruiseline is not going to risk the safety of the ship, and passengers, when it's out of their control.

On my British Isles cruise in July, we left port quite late by several hours a couple of times due to weather. The ship is huge, and tall, and susceptible to wind. There's just so much the engines and thrusters can do. Tides are a huge factor on the British Isles cruise. And, the English Channel is known for being unpredictable. On one cruise several years ago, when returning to Southampton from Gibraltar, we encountered strong winds and currents. The ship's engines were running at full but we were making only half the speed we should have and thus were several hours late arriving in Southampton. It's amazing how many people had early flights and were upset that we arrived after 9am rather than the expected 6am and missed their flights. Oh well. Perhaps people should do their homework before whining.

I have contact Princess UK about a missed port on our cruise in the summer and have been told that it is only american passengers that receive the port charges back and the uk do not pay the port charges in the first place

Just wondered if this is right or not
