Question about New York Port and the Jewel

bobbie,

We are leaving on the Jewel in a couple of weeks and this will be our second time leaving from Manhattan port. We come in from PA and found it fairly easy to get to. Followed MapQuest directions and they were very accurate. Traffic can be a little heavy (we are from a small town, rural area) depending on when you arrive, but we managed very well. Hope this helps you! Happy Cruising!!

We are considering taking the Jewel out of New York to Canada. When searching the Port of NY I think I found that the Jewel is going out of the Manhattan port. Is that very difficult to get to by car, we will be driving in. Thanks for the help.

You enter the terminal at 55th St and 12th Ave...drive up the ramp to the parking lot on the terminal roof. Parking is $30 per day...expensive, but secure and convenient. To get directions, go to this page and enter your starting point into the box for the Manhattan cruise terminal: http://www.nycruise.com/directions.html

bobbie, will you be driving or flying? we're from so. nj, but origionally from nyc, i live just off exit 7 on the nj turnpike,[ in case you want to look on map ], been out of nyc on the dawn x 2. found it very easy, took 1.5 hrs door to parking lot. there is parking on the roof of the cruise terminals. the cruise terminal is right next to the intrepid aircaft muesum/?exhibit. its neat to park your car, see a cruise ship & an aircraft carrier in one view! prosessing at the port is well organized.depending on the time of day travel into nyc, thru the lincoln tunnel is very heavy.

my sisiter has cruised out of redhook in brooklyn [a borough of nyc] and she said the cruise port which is only few yrs old is very nice but she said nyc is easier to reach.

bayonne,nj has celebrity & rccl, we've cruised x2 out of bayonne, although not as nice a terminal { its some old converted barracks or wearhouses},& the check in process does not seem to flow as easy, after check in you have to board a bus to reach the ship. BUT........

you don't have the traffic or expense of going into nyc.

hope that helps,

karen

I never understand why people are so afraid of driving in New York. Maybe its the TV shows maybe its "the Bonfire of the Vanities" but NY driving is no worse than driving on 95 anywhere on the east coast and much easier than lets says Atlanta, DC or anywhere in California. Having driven in most states, Europe Canada and many many other places, the driving is easier then Rome, Paris, Cairo, Quebec and so many other places. Yes there is traffic in the core city during rush hour, but you normally aren't driving during the rush hour and you will be driving on the periphery. Yes some of the drivers are aggressive(not me although the worst speeding ticket I have gotten was 92 in a 55 in OK), but it really isn't that bad(except for all the drivers from NJ-just kidding)...

If you need a ride to Philadelphia next Saturday, I'll be happy to give you a personal demonstration of just how good we NJ drivers really are...:D

I have to agree with you. At first, I was really scared about driving in NYC. But, living in the DC area most of my life and experiencing the drivers in this area, driving in NYC was a cake walk! I also found LA to be very mild in comparison to the craziness of DC.... I will gladly drive in and around NYC any day of the week! :D

Thanks for the feedback. I will admit we are a little afraid of coming that way. We are from NC and Charlotte, Greensboro and the Raleigh/Durham area are some of our worse. We have been through Atlanta and Jacksonville at bad times so guess we could handle the traffic. The worse part of any trip while in heavy traffic is being in the correct lane, guess that is our main concern. Is there plenty of warning on correct lanes to be in even back before the Lincoln Tunnel? Nothing worse than starting a cruise all stressed out from the drive to the port. Your comments were much appreciated.

I grew up in NYC and learned to drive there.

My wife is amazed how calm I am with taxis and aggressive drivers just cutting you off and making odd moves. She says I drive like Mr. Magoo in NYC. I explain I learned to drive here and I still work in NYC, so after 25 years behind the wheel, I'm used to it.

OP,

Drive in and park at the port. Expensive, but convenient. You may be tempted by some of the local parking lots offering better deals for the week, but depending how far away from the port it is, it's a bear to walk in NYC with luggage. If you park at the port, you can just leave someone with the bags and swing back and pick them up.

I was a driver improvement evaluator and driver safety specialist for NY State. They also sent me to a high speed/low speed chase course at what was the Suffolk County air force base....do you really want me to evaluate your driving?

The highway is well marked if you are taking the NJ Turnpike to the Lincoln tunnel you should have no problem(but FYI having an e-z-pass makes life much easier for the tolls). Getting off from the Lincoln tunnel there is an occasional problem with which way to go but it doesn't matter you have plenty of time to correct it.

I love a challenge...:D

one of my favorite stories is when we were doing a skid pan on a NJ pier. A local fire chief insisted that he was used to two feet driving(in a automatic car) and that even though we strongly suggested he didn't do that, he insisted on doing it. What happens as we had told him was than instinctively what people do in an emergency is slam down both feet. the car was equiped with a camera to watch the person's feet. sure enough on the skid pan when the car started to skid both his feet when to the floor(gas and brake)....spun the car around real well....

While I understand your "ease" at driving in the city....some people have never driven outside of their own home town. Going to any city is a challenge for some. As a resident of NJ who has lived 5 miles away from the city of Philadelpia all my life, I am still intimidated by it in some ways. Does not stop me if I need to got there, but non the less, some of us are just not "city drivers"....and some of us are.

The good news about making a wrong turn in NYC is that you can go around the block and make the correct turn. Try to do that in DC and you'll end up in Virginia! Our first trip to NYC I made several wrong turns (even with the GPS!). No problem; went around the block and got back on track. Just be patient and take your time. The pier is not far from the Lincoln Tunnel at all. Easy-peasy!

yes but most people who post about this are more intimated by NYC than other cities. My point is that driving is driving and NYC is surely no worse than most other cities. If you can drive in any major metropolitan area NYC is no worse. In fact in many ways it is easier. That was my point. The day when people never go to the big city(any big city) ended with the demise of the horse and buggy. Surely some large Malls are worse than some cities.

You got that right! Friends of mine moved to No VA a number of years back. They bought a map of DC which started out something like "DC is very easy to find your way around, certain streets go north and south and certain go east and west (I can't remember which is which, the named or the numbered) except....and the except went on for the rest of the booklet.

Two years ago we were going to Williamsburg from here in the NYC area. Hubby had the GPS which told him to go on 395 (I think). I kept telling him to take 495 and go around DC but he insisted on following the GPS into the heart of DC. I knew to take 495 because I used to visit my friends often before I was married.

On the way back I begged him not to follow the GPS but he did anyway (can you say stubborn) so once again we were stuck in the heart of DC on a Friday before Labor Day. I was ready to shoot him.

Oh, my heart goes out to you. Whenever anyone wants to visit the DC area and they ask me for advice, I give them 2 words: Take Metro! I used to drive into DC every day. I will NEVER have a job downtown again. It's an absolute zoo! One wrong turn and you could end up in a very bad neighborhood.

If someone is driving from NC to NYC, driving conditions in Rome, Paris, Quebec etc are pretty irrelevant to their concerns. If you get punched in the face by a mugger, it is little solace that Mike Tyson would have hit you harder.
