Save your pennies! (and nickels...and dimes..)

Recommended Posts

Ive heard of this before and have done it. Then got out of the habbit. I just now found about 3.00 in spare change in my purse and put it in a jar. Its the start of my cruise fund and from now on I will be adding in all spare change from now on to save for the cruise.

Thanks for the suggestion and I cant wait to find out how much ive collected before I go on the two cruises im planning. Im boarding on October 31st 2010 for my first cruise and I cant wait.

Adri :)

I have saved change in the past and used it for vacations. It really adds up. Then my son became a teenager and it's like a scavenger hunt around here. He finds all the change and puts it in "his" coin counter and saves...so it's kinda worthless to try it around here these days. :(

Our banks won't even take change anymore...not even if you wrap them.

Years and years ago (I think I was in elementary school) my little brother and I won (or bought at a secret santa store thingy) coin rollers. It is a little plastic stand with four tubes and each one holds the exact amount of that coin denomination for a roll of coins. So I fill up a (ok, I get impatient and only half way fill up) a 3 lb coffee can and then I divide it into the tubes and have those coin roll papers that are rolled on the bottom, slide one into the tube and I have a roll of coins. Started saving this bunch in Feb and rolled them last week, had $67 rolled and another $10 or so in not quite ready to roll tubes. Yippee!

We started a big jar for spare change for the upcoming cruise as well thanks to a tip on the boards! to make it a bit more fun than a plastic jug we decorated it with pictures of the ship and our faces pasted onto other vacationers! ( i work as a designer so playing in photoshop for fun was great fun)

I' so happy to not have to ever roll change again. When i was a kid that was the only way I got an allowance. I remember the time I actually had to roll $50 in pennies to pay the fine for an overdue book, carrying all those pennies on your bike is not fun.

We have a coin jar that we save spare change in. It doesn't get filled up very fast since we also use debit cards 99% of the time. But we buckled down and have been putting $50 into savings every paycheck, by the time we sail we'll have 1k plus whatever change is sitting in the jar.

We had another larger coin jar that was almost full but when the DH was broken into someone stole it.

About six years ago I had heart surgery and quit smoking. I have since that day put $3 in a jar which is what one pack of cigarettes costs on average. So every my"smoking Habit pays for about half the cruise:D

Now, there is a way to get a quick free coin counter, and it can add some fun to the situation.

Put your pennies in one container.

Put all your silver in another.

Go to your nearest Casino.

The ones that still drop coins.

Turn in your coins for FREE and have them count them, and enjoy an hour or too on the machines.

The Pennies you donate to the favorite charity of your choice.

Later

That would be great if you don't have the FLY to the nearest casino:rolleyes:

I have a money can about 12 inches high that needs a can opener to get at the coins. Great incentive. I put in my gold coins ($1 and $2) and 50 cent pieces and the odd notes at the end of pay week. If weight is anything to go by, I will have plenty for my on board bar bill this trip. By the way, I think that rolling coins is a lost art! Banks in Australia put the nominated amount into little zip lock bags now. Showing my age.

Way too funny, we have a coin jar too. Today, I took a bunch of change with me in the car and rolled it as my husband drove. I killed time and rolled about $50.00. Would have rolled more but I did not bring enough change with me.

I think while watching tv tonight I will do some more.:D

You might want to check with your bank ( I apologize if someone already suggested this, I did not read the entire thread) Our ban lets us use the coin machine for free, it gives you a slip and you can just take it to the teller and get your bills.

This thread led us to be "reunited" with our coin jar, in hopes of saving for our on-board service charges.

With no effort, we began throwing the change of our broken bills in. We decided to count last week after about 2 weeks of putting the change in, thinking we had about $30 in the vase.

We actually have $78...and are thrilled because looking at it you could never tell...and it was SO EASY to save.

Great tip!

It is very easy to save for with the cruise jar, Our last cruise went to turn coin in at my credit union (they have a coin machine). We had 1300.00 in change. I was shocked. I never use coin even for a penny, every night I feed my coin bucket. I am trying to beat last years amount. My husband was shocked at total in the bucket and now he is even feeding the bucket.

We bought a parking meter bank a few years ago that stands about 5 feet tall. All change goes there.

Maybe one of their other branches? We deal with PNC but they don't have coin machines in all the branches just the larger offices.

Yes we deal with PNC also. The nearest branch to us is the main branch near South Hills Village. Last year the machine was down on the day we chose to cash in our year's coin collection and we were forced to use the coinstar with the 9% fee. UGH!

I live 20 minutes away from a South Hills Village! Which state? As I'm sure there's more than 1..

Pittsburgh area?

As a former teller I'd also recommend you call your bank. They might not have a coin counter in the lobby but they most likely have one in the back. At the place where we worked people would come in with these nicely rolled coins that I know they had to have spent days rolling and we'd go into the back, bust open the rollers and dump them into the machine.

Great to know about the bank. I have a great relationship with my favorite teller at our bank- I'll have to ask about that.

I'm in Monroeville every Sunday! Half of my family lives in the Penn Hills / Plum / Oakmont area! How crazy!!

I live out by Washington though.. so about an hour from there.

Awesome!

I love this thread. Great tips! Everytime I see any change lying on the ground or anywhere I pick it up.. I always have a mini change purse with me at all times - and my boyfriend can not stop laughing at me. He thinks I'm ridiculous. But maybe I'll use all the money for my bar tab on our cruise! Then who will be laughing ;)

I had three coffee cans of quarters stolen from my home. :o It took a long time to get over it. Never thought it would happen. But it did. I still save coins. I go to the credit union more often now. They will let me use the change counter for free to make a deposit. Then I make a cash withdrawal. Now when I get enough money I buy travelers checks. They are free to purchase. It least if they are taken I can get the money back. :) You can’t get much interest from a savings account these days. Plus if the money is in the bank it may get spent on something else.
