clearing customs in yyz or iad?

Good morning...:)

We are flying from Toronto to San Juan with a brief changeover in Washington in a few weeks on United Air. Can anyone tell me if we clear customs in Toronto or in Washington?

USA Customs and Immigration formalities will be done at YYZ, with the connection at IAD handled like a standard "domestic" one.

 

Be prepared for long lines at YYZ depending on your departure time.

You'll use the US Pre-clearance facility at YYZ prior to boarding your flight to IAD. At IAD, you should be treated as a domestic arrival. This will also allow you to check your luggage all the way too

Agree, but it's been our experience, because of the number of USA Customs and Immigration booths, the lines move fairly quickly.

Thanks for all your replies! :) We fly out of YYZ about 3 times a year and only once (luckily) have we encountered long line ups at customs. Hopefully this time is quick and easy too! :D
