TBSCruiser Posted November 6, 2009 #101 Share Posted November 6, 2009 http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2009/10/endortest.shtm "The revised Guides also add new examples to illustrate the long standing principle that “material connections” (sometimes payments or free products) between advertisers and endorsers – connections that consumers would not expect – must be disclosed. These examples address what constitutes an endorsement when the message is conveyed by bloggers or other “word-of-mouth” marketers. The revised Guides specify that while decisions will be reached on a case-by-case basis, the post of a blogger who receives cash or in-kind payment to review a product is considered an endorsement. Thus, bloggers who make an endorsement must disclose the material connections they share with the seller of the product or service. Likewise, if a company refers in an advertisement to the findings of a research organization that conducted research sponsored by the company, the advertisement must disclose the connection between the advertiser and the research organization. And a paid endorsement – like any other advertisement – is deceptive if it makes false or misleading claims." From what I have read the details have not been ironed out. And this has what to do with travel agents being clearer as Coxswain said? Like I said, no facts...just dribble.

Perhaps he's talking about travel agents that post on this board. Some are upfront about being a TA and others pretend they are just average cruisers. As this forum is very much like a blog, perhaps he's thinking that the new regulations would force those agents to disclose that fact when posting on CC. That would be his long lusted for transparency. Who is going to do background checks on all of the members of cruise critic? What governmental agency would have the manpower to do this. The FTC? This is another totally idiotic lunacy thought up by some left wing moonbat, that is so far removed from reality as to be completely laughable. Either that or we will live in an international police state, if they have the slightest dream of actually doing this silly thing.:( jc

Yeah right, you are in lala land, they can't police porn, scams and other things, do you realistically think they have time for a cruise message board, you should stop posting what you don't have a clue about....reality! SEASONEDCRUZER Posted November 6, 2009 #111 Share Posted November 6, 2009 You are allowed by board rules to put your agency name in your signature, just not a location Oh, I know agents can list their agency name and I have no problem to do this, like I say I am PROUD of what I do, but one of the TA bashers (sorry, can't remember which one) went after Sue L recently and tried to stir up trouble for her with the moderator! :( So I am a little reluctant to draw the TA bashers ire! :(

alexkrn46 Posted November 6, 2009 #119 Share Posted November 6, 2009 First of all, the first I heard of this FTC regulation was on a Tech site, everyone has their own interpretation of how it will be enforced. No, I don't think the FTC will look for cases but I would not doubt that citizens will send them cases for review. I have found it fascinating who is a travel agent and I would imagine it is not hard to become a D+ when part of your cruises are paid for. We most certainly do not. Just got off the Brilliance and paid for it like anyone else. I am a platinum and I paid for each and every one. Once in a while they have events/inaguarals that TA's get to attend but we get no credits for those. So you may want to change your perceptions. alexkrn46 Posted November 7, 2009 #123 Share Posted November 7, 2009 I have been told by my former travel agent (that they get rewarded with free trips and discounts) and when I do search for your company it lists travel benefits as part of employment. I guess you need to check with HR why you are not eligible.

Yes some little freebies, like I am doing a overnight (free) on Carnival next week and I have two free cruises from other lines but they don't count towards points and that is what your were saying, that it would be easy to get to diamond plus that way. That is not how it works! It would be nice if it did.
