Puddleshuttle Posted November 28, 2009 #1 Share Posted November 28, 2009 We leave today on the Ecstasy. When we checked out galveston.com we saw that she had her rump in the wrong direction! Anyone know what is going on??? I hope there is not a problem....
willy32465 Posted November 28, 2009 #2 Share Posted November 28, 2009 I am sure there is nothong wrong. When we were in Nassau on the Dream the Pride and Conquest were there and all 3 ships backed into the pier. There could be many reasons why they do this but I'm sure it is not anything serious. firefly333 Posted November 28, 2009 #3 Share Posted November 28, 2009 Iv seen Conquest and Voyager backwards as well sitting in Galveston, dont know what they base it on, that sometimes they dont turn before docking, they do it after they leave. BrendaB1 Posted November 28, 2009 #4 Share Posted November 28, 2009 May be Immigration check. I've since Conquest dock that way when all the crew had to go thru Customs/Immigration check.
JTJ Posted November 28, 2009 #5 Share Posted November 28, 2009 All these CCL ships; Fantasy, Sensation, Pride, and Dream pull straight in and turn around when leaving. But the Glory backs in. RCCL always backs in, sometimes using the same pier that CCL uses. The SOS, MOS, MaOS, FOS, and last Tuesday's VOS all back in. NCL Dawn & Gem pull straight in and both Disney's backs in. It's the same west turning basin that's used by all of the ships. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
forwardcabin Posted November 28, 2009 #6 Share Posted November 28, 2009 When we sailed Ecstasy in August, they were in backwards and we entered at deck 3. We asked and they said it was because they were painting that side of the ship.
*Mach* Posted November 28, 2009 #7 Share Posted November 28, 2009 It could be any of a variety of reasons... The last time they docked 'backward' they had a medical emergency to get off the ship. On other occasions the wind has been too strong to allow the ship to turn with the thrusters alone and would have required the assistance of tugs. Additionally, if they're running a touch late the will often dock with the port side to the pier just to save time... :)
Rare dna1990 Posted November 28, 2009 #8 Share Posted November 28, 2009 Cozumel has cancelled Ecstasy since Destiny stopped showing up these past weeks...so E will now sail Galveston Bay. Duck at sailaway to get under the Seawolf bridge!

JTJ Posted December 12, 2009 #11 Share Posted December 12, 2009 As a pax. I would rather the ships turn around in the afternoon. When I'm on RCCL I always get up early to watch the ship turn. It's exciting to me. The FOS misses the pier by less than 20ft. The Dream is here now and is again aft seaward, so will get to see it turn this afternoon. While On-Board!! futaba951 Posted December 12, 2009 #15 Share Posted December 12, 2009 When the Holiday was in Mobile, it almost always turned in the river prior to docking. Now, the Fantasy usually pulls straight in and makes the turn as it is leaving. Could just be the captains preference.
travelntreats Posted December 12, 2009 #16 Share Posted December 12, 2009 Why would anyone think that just because the ship backed in that that meant there is a problem ? Perhaps the captain had to practice up on his "back up" skills !

Anyone know what is going on??? I hope there is not a problem.... There is no backwards at a dock [unless the aft end is tied to the dock] Ports tell ships how to dock, ships tell ports how they want to dock [need to paint a side etc,] and many ports have turning basins, the ship can pull in and dock and turn around in the basin when it leaves or it can come in to the port, go to the turning basin and turn around before docking. Home ports they usually dock the same way but not always. Ports on the itinerary they change the docking all the time.

Cruise Cat Posted December 12, 2009 #20 Share Posted December 12, 2009 I'd prefer they do do turnaround when leaving also especially since Carnival has this thing about doing the muster drill during sailaway!
