Sun Princess closets - may be a problem for your clothing

We just returned from the Sun Princess - 13 night NZ cruise. Loved the ports and the cruise in general but need to alert passengers to a potential problem with the closets in the cabins. We were a group of 23 in 12 cabins. Of those cabins FOUR cabins had problems with ripped clothing due to the hinges on the closets.

This is an older Princess ship - one that has actual doors on the closets, not the large open closets the newer ships have. On the side of the closet where long dresses would hang, the hinge apparently is so sharp that if clothing is crammed in the closet it will actually cut a hole in the garment.

We first found this out when one lady noticed that her cashmere sweater had a new large hole in it exactly the shape of the hinge on the door. When she mentionned it to others in the group we found that another lady had a similar hole in her sweater that had been hanging in the same place in her cabin. Another gentleman had a similar hole in the sleeve of his travel shirt. And the last person had a hole in the sleeve of their COAT!

Princess was alerted to all 4 problems and each time it was brought up they were amazed that this had happened. Of course, I'm sure nothing will be done to fix the garments nor will the doors on the closets be fixed. But I wanted to alert others so they can avoid this problem. Hope this helps others so they don't have the same issue.

With not a lot of closet space, it's easy to stuff the closets with clothes on this ship. When we sailed on the Sun Princess in 2003, I had a small tear on the sleeve of a suit that had hung near the hinge inside of the closet. The suit was repaired inexpensively by a tailor after we returned home. But after complaining to our room steward and his supervisor, they were both surprised to hear this. The supervisor inserted fabric into the hinge to see if it would tear, but he was unsuccessful.

If we sail again on Sun-class ships, we will have to think of a way to keep the clothes away from the hinges.

Happened to us recently on our January/February cruise to New Zealand. Reported it to Passenger Services and all they did was fill out a report for us to submit to our travel insurer. Still deciding whether it is worth the hassle of claiming.

We had a closer look at the report and realised it had to be forwarded to Princess for consideration. Am happy to report that we have recently received a cheque for the cost of the jacket. We will be travelling on the Dawn Princess next year and will take more care, especially when hanging long sleeved items!!
