Roma San Pieto to Civitavecchia

I have been trying to plan for our trip this spring 2010. We will be staying close to the Vatican, so our thought is to take the train from San Pietro to Civitavecchia rather than going to Termini first. I notice that most of the trains that leave from San Pietro station to Civitavecchia seem to leave leave later in the afternoon. Is this generally the case? If so, this may not work for us because we would like to get to port early afternoon. Thanks for any advice you could give.

You're getting bad information somewhere. There are two trains an hour, each day, from Roma San Pietro to Civitavecchia beginning at 6:29 AM. They leave Roma San Pietro at 29 minutes and 59 minutes after each hour (6:29, 6:59, 7:29, 7:59 etc.).

You can check schedules at www.trenitalia.com; however, all of the trains for specific dates in the future may not appear yet. The schedule may change slightly between now and your actual travel date, but not enough to significantly impact your plans.

Every 30 minutes, the trains leaving at 29 past the hour are a little faster as they make fewer stops.

You can also get a train directly from FCO to S. Pietro and vice versa. It is a stopping train..I think there are about 6 stops. Very handy saves going thru Termini (about 1/2 the price of the Leonardo Express as I recall).

There are no trains that go directly to or from the airport to Roma San Pietro - in all cases you must change trains at Trastevere. You are correct, however, that the train fare is half the price of the Leonardo Express to Termini (Euro 5,50 vs 11,00 to Termini).
