Tour guide or Taxi recommended for Didyma, Lake Bafa

Since we have been to Ephesus and the Terrace Houses before, we are thinking of visiting Lake Bafa, Didyma, (having lunch at a restaurant facing the Temple of Apollo), Priene and Miletos on our next cruise in May 2010.

 

I am trying to decide if we should just hire a taxi, or if we need a driver and a tour guide. The taxi is quite a bit cheaper for our party, but will we be missing out on a lot of information without a guide?

 

I appreciate any advice/suggestions.

How much research are you willing to do in advance? If you like history and "do your homework" before the cruise, you could certainly do it by taxi. Although I've found tours in Turkey to be not that much more expensive than just a taxi...

 

I did Priene, Didyma, and Miletus last Spring with a guide. To be honest, he didn't tell me much that I hadn't already read -- maybe a few details here and there. He realized this and was smart enough to just let me wander after giving me a quick overview at each place, then stood by and invited any questions.

 

So I guess it's up to your own style and preferences, really.

Thanks for the info. I probably should do the research and take the taxi. I know I would have been lost without a guide at Ephesus - but I had not done any research for that or the Terrace Houses at that time. Thanks again!
