Galveston Mardi Gras 2010

I am also interested in the Madi Gras that is happening in Galveston, have they done this before? We usually cruise out of Galveston in Feb but guess we have just missed this time. Is it a really big deal?? Will have some teens with us on this next trip and wondering where it all happens.

Yes, Galveston Mardi Gras started in 1867. Next year's celebration will be February 5 - February 16, 2010.

We booked our 2nd cruise from Galveston during Mardi Gras (we had no idea :eek:). It is a very big deal! The best place to be is on a balcony, in a hotel on the Seawall. The "parade" of people on bikes, in cars and on foot (along with more police than you've probably ever seen in one place:)) is something to see!

 

If your teens are "street savy", I'd say let them loose (with a LOT of checking in by phone)! If they aren't street savy, keep them with you. It's great fun, but can be overwhelming for "sheltered" children (and adults!).

Parades do not have same routes.

Depending on weekend and each parade time and route, you may not have a view.

Some routes are downtown, some are on Seawall, some are not on either, some are on 25th combined with Seawall and/or Downtown.

 

One is Childrens parade, one is dogs and cat parade (Barkus and Meow).

All are Famliy friendly except maybe one.

The Saturday 13th night parade route downtown

is only one that could be a little overwhelming for "sheltered" children.

It is not anything overwhelming like New Orleans though.

Obcouse there could be an exception anywhere anytime depending on the people and extent of booze.

 

Everything are fund raiser events for worthy causes.

These events actually are ongoing all year around raising money.

During MG Parties and Balls are everywhere and all times of the day and night.

 

The best place to be is on any parade route (on ground, hotel balconies, building balconies downtown).

Its all about a good time .........the beads, people watching and the floats.

Its about watching yourself and most all grownups.....

become kids again trying to catch those darn beads.

Just wondering whether we should choose a different hotel so the kids (and I ;)) can get some sleep. Would actually enjoy being near the festivities but not if it will go really late. Thanks!

You willl not be affected. The parades are downtown, not on the seawall that weekend.

If you walk or run anyway for exercise....it would not be bad one at all.

Krewe Gambrinus Parade

on Seawall with fireworks at 36th and Seawall over the Gulf

They throw a party parade for 200,000 of their closest friends

with over 650,000 throws

and a fantastic fireworks display.

Open and free to the public!

Parade runs along Seawall Blvd. from 23rd St. to Central City Blvd. (63rd St.) in Galveston.
