Mahogany Bay Cabanas - What's included?

Hey cruisers!

We are stopping at Mahogany Bay on Isla Roatan in Honduras on our Dream cruise leaving Dec 26th.

We've seen a few pics of the cabanas available for rent at the port, and was wondering if anyone has experienced them yet?

Do you know what is included in the $200 per day price? Any food? Drinks? Waiter service?

Any help is welcome

Mike

Hello,

I have booked a Western Caribbean cruise on the Valor for March 2010. I called Carnival in regard to the Roatan cabanas as I haven't found much information here on the forums. On the website for Shore Excursions on Sunday night I could reserve a cabana; however, there was no information in the Details link on the site--that's why I called.

The PVP didn't have the information but transferred me to the E-Website department. The representative put me on hold for a few minutes while he asked his supervisor about what info they had and he came back on the line with the following information:

--The cost is $199

-The cabana can have up to 4 people

-The website says one hour; however, the rep said it is a Full Day Rental

-You receive a Priority Tender Pass so that you can utilize the greatest amount of time at the cabana

-Cabana includes the following: refrigerator, ceiling fan, air conditioner, table and chairs inside for 4, deck chairs, two misters on private terrace, and private showers (I believe they are outside)

-Cabana also includes: fruit, veggies with dip, chips and salsa, soft drinks and bottled water

-Towels, selected water toys (mats, etc), and snorkel equipment included in the cabana rental

I believe he was reading it from a script of some kind and from what I've read about the other cabanas that Carnival has on other islands it sounded pretty similar to what I've found. I hope this helps.

BTW--I love your website!! It has great information on it.:)

I have heard a great deal of good things about the Cabanas...Where are you able to book them? I have looked on the web but I think I missed it. Thanks for the great info, I was so happy to see this post.

Hi,

I'm Mike's partner and we booked it on the shore excursion area of the web-site. Oddly, it doesn't show up in the list if you're just browsing the site but if you go into an actual booking that stops there, it's listed, with very little information, as the others have said. It's also confusing when you go to book because the site gives the impression that it's $199 per person but that price actually gets you up to four people. This could be why they are not selling well yet (I read a review the other day where only one was sold for that day) and why we were able to book one a week before our holiday sailing. On the HAL island, it's walker-to-walker combat to get one! In looking at pictures that John Heald posted on his blog, it looks as though there are fewer hammocks than cabanas so we'll be getting off early and heading over.

Roatan is definitely a dock at Mahagony Bay - there is no tendering there. There's a thorough review with pics of the exterior of the cabanas - go to the ports of call board, and then to the Mahagony Bay thread. Try starting from the end of the thread and working your way back to find the post with the link in it. It's a good review - worth the effort to find it.

I thought I read some where you get to ride the Magical Chair lift @ no charge all day too.

@ $5 pp X 4 =$20 so that is a little perk too. Making a Cabana look better and better Huh

But I have already booked a fun day with a group of folks heading off into town a bit and to another beach.

But you all have fun. I plan on being back in time to at least spend my $5 for a ride on the Magic Chair lift :D

Thanks for the laugh.

You're welcomed. The island was the only one I've been to with a paved path for walkers, too.

It is. They must have been reading the description for HMC which is a tender port. Other than that, there probably are many similarities.

I believe you're right. On the HAL one, you can rent the cabana and then add an additional fee where you get free drinks, lunch from the specialty restaurant delivered and assistance with your things. It makes the whole price about $400. I didn't see the upgrade option when we booked, but the operator did say they would meet with us to see what we wanted and what our preferences were. I presume that's just to figure out which sodas we would like, etc.

I have not yet experienced the cabanas at Roatan but wanted to share my less than satisfactory experience a couple of weeks ago with the cabanas at Grand Turk since the cabanas appear to be quite similar.

My sister and I rented one but I ended up going alone in the end.

The cabana was very nice but I thought it strange that they had a cloth covered (not waterproof) material on the sectional sofa that was inside. There was plenty of room for 4 people inside, but the porch section only had 2 lounge chairs and wouldn't have been able to accomodate 4 chairs.

There was suppose to be private waiter service and with a big stretch of the imagination I guess you could call it that. You pressed a buzzer in the cabana and eventually one of 2 waiters would come take your order, but they were also waiting on everyone around the pool.

It took 15 minutes for my waiter to come take my order for a margarita and another 20 minutes for it to be delivered at the END of her rounds and it was by then so watered down it really wasn't worth it.

But the biggest concern was the lack of security. Even though the doors had locks on them they weren't passing out any keys so your belongings couldn't be secured if you went to the pool or the beach. I was assured that everything would be safe, but then the couple in the cabana next to me and I noticed 4 or 5 teenagers who looked like they were locals just roaming about.

At one point 2 of them came onto my porch and just sat down on the other lounge chair  I explained that this was a private rental and asked if they were cruise passengers. They just smiled and wandered down to an empty cabana.

The other kids started going in and out of all of the cabanas. My neighbors called the waitress and ask for security. After more than 40 minutes with no security they decided to leave. Security finally showed up, but just stood there and never spoke to the young men who finally wandered off toward the exit of the resort.

I only had to pay $100 for my rental but being alone and with no way to secure my belongings I left after about 2 hours. I sent a note to the Shore Excursion desk about my concerns. This isn't something that I would pay to do again.

Interesting Schplinky. I was in Mahogany Bay last week, and had the exact opposite experience. I had no prior knowledge of the cabanas, but discovered them when I went exploring. Two of the cabanas were wide open, and I walked in to check them out. I even considered lounging on one of the hammocks (unaware that they were for cabana renters), but the rest of my part was on the other end of the bay so I walked back. No one ever asked me what I was doing there or for any proof of rental.

That being said, security was at the entrance to Mahogany Bay and required you to show your sign & sail card for entry.

Huh!

I guess that other person's experience was different. Oh well, we won't leave our things out in the cabana when we're not there.

p.s. You're pretty bold just strolling right in! Would you not have been embarrassed if you discovered people inside or could you tell they were empty?

They have double doors, which was wide open. You can basically see the entire unit when the doors are open like that, so it was obviously empty. I did notice a key in the door, so I am guessing you would have the ability to lock the door if you want to enjoy the water or whatever... I wish I had taken pictures but I had left my camera with others at our spot on the beach.

There was a post a while back where they said there was very little privacy at the cabanas because of the people lounging on the beach. Also the ship may not be able to dock like last week. Nobody has posted yet as to what was done to get them over to the other dock.

Hi Dave, Met you and wife on Holiday's Final Voyage at the Platinum party. Glad to see you and wife are having some cruises since the Holiday.

We were on the January 16th Triumph and was scheduled to dock at Mahogany Bay. Had cabana rented (ALL sold out on our cruise). Jorge (CD) said it was "to windy" to stop there and all the Mahogany Bay excursions were cancelled. Very disappointed we ended up at the other pier. We went to Tabyana Beach and had a wonderful time. Our second visit to Tabyana, but always fun there. Ended we hadn't seen the changes and were not as dissapointed as we were when we first heard it wouldn't be Mahogany Bay. The area "inside" was much larger, clean and nice with many more stores, bars and such. First time to Roatan was a little intimidting compared to now! Darn it!! Guess we will have to book another so to get to Mahogany Bay! ;)

Enjoy all!

Hi Kat,

We actually went on the Fantasy and then the NCL Spirit within two weeks of getting off the Holiday. Coxen Hole pier used to be nothing more than a fenced off area that barely had enough room for the vans and buses to park. There was one cinder block open bar to get drinks at.

Now it has been expanded to have nice looking buildings and shops. A drive thru parking for the excursion buses/vans. Outside the gates, it can still be a bit depressing but that will eventually change with time.

We have just returned from the Carnival Legend and our group of 4 rented a cabanna at Mahogany Bay. After docking you can walk or take the Magical Flying Beach Chairs (unlimited use included in price) to the beach. Once on the beach you report to the Beach Rental Shack where someone will give you a key and escort you to the cabanna. You will leave your sail and sign card to be returned after you return the keys. The cabanna included a sofa, chair, coffee table and of course an air conditioner. There was an electrical outlet inside. The front porch includes 2 lounge chairs. There is an outdoor shower that is shared with the neighboring cabanna. Also included is a hammock and 2 floating beach mats. There were 2 waiters assigned to the group of about 6 cabannas. You will find drink and food menus inside the cabanna. We did not have to wait long for waiter service. The cabanna did not come with soda, water or snacks. It also does not have a refrigerator. These additional ammenities are only available at the Half Moon Caye cabannas. The sandy beach in front of the cabannas is interrupted by a 3 foot wide stretch of concrete that you must step down from to get into the water. I'm not sure of the purpose but there is caution tape up in front of it to remind people that it can get slippery. The other side of the beach did not have this concrete. We were there on 9/16/10 and found there to be a few jellyfish. We were warned by security of the jellyfish prior to entering the beach. The good news is the current took most of the jellyfish to the far side away from the cabanas. As the day progressed many people came to the cabanna side to swim to avoid the jellyfish. There was security present but after the first hour or so they did not seem to be stopping anyone from entering.

Hope this helps you, enjoy your stay.

We are traveling on the Carnival Legend 4/12 and have secured a cabana. I understand that it is for 4 individuals. Since we are traveling with a large group, is there security to keep them "out"? Or he better question is can more than 4 "visit" the cabana ?
