formula14 Posted December 19, 2009 #1 Share Posted December 19, 2009 1st time in the Cayman Islands & we've narrowed down our beach options to 7 mile or rum point beach, but since we're there in mid July, shade is a premium & having the option of sitting in the shade of an umbrella or palm tree is a must. What is the better beach option? After doing some research I've noticed that folks that go to 7 mile basically drop thier towels in the sand & bask in the sun since its a public beach. The hotels don't give day passes... so facilities (loungers, showers, bathrooms, etc) are not available to the cruise day trippers. This could make for a long day in the sun & heat of July. Is this correct? Are the open areas "palmy" & offer some shade? Rum Point gets really crowded on cruise days, but there's plenty of loungers & shade, & facilities are open to the public. I've read reviews that it's not very clean, expensive & slow service, but it's the price you pay for open facilities. We'd prefer 7 mile, but would love hear from others that have been there. Thanks from a 1st timer!!
debshomespun Posted December 19, 2009 #2 Share Posted December 19, 2009 We've been to Rum Point beach several times. We found it when we took our tour of stingray city through Nativeways. It is a beautiful beach area. Lots of shade. They have public restrooms, that are nice. The food and drinks are expensive. Also, you will probably need to rent a car to go there. Cab fare would be outrageous. It is on the other side of the island from where you dock. About 45 min ride there. Well worth it. Also, it is not very crowded. Here is their website: http://www.eandbcaymans.com/2Attractions%20a%20Rum%20Point.htm Been to seven mile beach also. It is a pretty beach, but not much shade, and can be very crowded in middle of the summer and hot.
formula14 Posted December 19, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted December 19, 2009 Thanks, on the beach in July without shade could be a real problem, we may just do an organized Rum Point with a Stingray excursion. This way transport is not an issue & we still get to enjoy one of the famous beaches in the Caymans without scorching in the sun, which would happen on 7 mile beach. Thanks for your advice :)
bookbabe Posted December 20, 2009 #4 Share Posted December 20, 2009 There's no need to go all the way out to Rum Point just because you're worried about shade... :D Royal Palms and Sea Grape are two sections of Seven Mile Beach with full free facilities, a bar/restaurant and watersports and chair/umbrella rentals. Search either of those terms in this forum, and you'll find lots of threads with reviews and pics. There's also the Royal Palms webcam - http://www.reefgrill.net/netcam/index.html
