Accra Beach food ?

Is there anywhere on Accra Beach (or within walking distance) where I can get a good flying fish sandwich? Definitely does not have to be a "fancy" place - just somewhere where the flying fish is good. A beach bar/grill is fine.

There are plenty of eating options within easy walking distance of Accra. We hit a nice sandwich shop that had flying fish sandwiches (although my wife's portion of mahi-mahi was much bigger!) across the street from the beach and maybe 100 meters in the direction of the port. Accra had the most amazing snorkeling I have ever experienced! You need to be a strong swimmer as the reef is maybe 200 meters offshore, but certainly worth it if you are able.

Accra had the most amazing snorkeling I have ever experienced! ===> Ah so!

For some time I've been saying

that the man-made barrier reef about 200 m. offshore is worth the swim out. ;)

Other than that, the whole of Rockley Bay is a white sand bottom

(thus the gorgeous turquoise water-color!)

Nice to hear someone back me up on this Accra snorkelling thing!

Most people have never swum out to that barrier reef,

so they have no idea what awaits them, when they get out there.

I'm guessing you worked your way along the calmer inside edge?

(On a day when it's not too rough) snorkelling along the outer edge

is quite different from the inside edge of the reef.

.................................................

To address portion size between your Flying Fish and your wife's Mahi-mahi...

Your flying fish sandwich contained one entire(dressed) Flying Fish!

In life, the Flying Fish is about 1 ft. long -a small fish

but when he's been all dressed up for table, he's down to about 7 or 8 inches long.

On the other hand, had they put a whole Mahi-mahi on your wife's plate, she'd still be tackling it :D

since that species of fish is around 4 ft. long!

So what she got was a decent chunk (a steak) of the slab-side of a much larger fish

...which we refer to as Dolphin, here on the island

-not to be confused with Flipper the warm-blooded, air-breathing dolphin mammal.

Hope that explains your disproportionate lunches?

Username Howasaur just posted two incredible 'live!' shots of a Flying Fish doing his/her thing

gliding through the air as they skim the water.

Thought you'd like to see

what your Just Grillin lunch looked like..when it was very very fresh :D

-it's like a small bird, isn't it?

Is the flying fish grilled or fried?

How much does it cost in US$??? ===> Cheap: it's a small fish

It's marinated in a lime & salt mixture for awhile

then dipped in an egg-and-breadcrumbs batter(with seasonings!)

and then usually fried for a short time in hot oil.

It's the larger chunks of Dorado/Mahi-mahi that are grilled.

Either one is delicious' date=' although [b']Barracuda [/b]still remains the sweetest fish in the sea ;)

but he has to be a small one, under 20 ins. long! :)

Cost? Oh geez I don't know...

but it's a small fish often/usually served in a bun,

so what they do is they create a 'Flying Fish Platter'

and load it up with a side order of whatever, plus rabbit food(fresh salad stuff)

to make it up to around Bds.$10 or so (= US$5 or so).

You can afford it.

Bought from a more 'local' source(non-restaurant)

you're far more likely to just get the fish in the bun, for less $$ or course.

Don't let them put too much Pepper Sauce on it.

That stuff is like molten lava. You've been warned!

Thanks for the info. I had heard horror stories of food prices in Barbados. That's why I asked.

So the Barracuda is fried and the Mahi Mahi is grilled? And you prefer the Barracuda?

If you are standing on the beach looking out, what way to the reef area?

Right or Left? Looking at going to this beach and would like to take a look.

Looking out to sea from Rockley Beach, the clearly-marked offshore barrier reef is to your left.

It shows as a dark stripe in the otherwise clear-turquoise water

and has marker poles with nav.lights, at either end.You can hardly miss it..

I swam straight out toward the buoy at the right end of the reef. Approaching the reef, it was so completely covered in fish that you couldn't see any of the reef! I spent most of my time on the outside edge, which was much more interesting than the inside and had better clarity as well. The day I went there were gentle 3-foot rollers. It was awesome drifting over the top of the reef in 3-4 feet of water. HIGHLY recommended!

Sorry to hijack away from the food topic, but it's worth it to evangelize for Accra snorkeling!

Is there a place to rent snorkeling equipment?
No..sorry

You gotta bring your own.

Accra is not (previously)known for its snorkelling.

Beach rentals include chairs, umbrellas, boogey-boards, some watersports services

but not snorkelling equipment -bring your own, definitely!

Try De Rock Bar in the little Kiosk Area at Rockley/Accra beach. Patricia will serve you a right proper Fish Cutter. Sorry, can't remember the cost, but she does good stuff there. Enjoy.

Avoid Chicken George, and don't get caught up in the Smoothie Stand.. Pat is in the middle on the beach side of the area.

I really want to snorkle out there, but the waves are quite big, the current feels strong, and I am nervous about heading so far out to sea on my own! what a wimp I am!! I have brought my own snorkle and mask, but had to leave my flippers behind because they just wouldn't fit in my case so I am going to ask the managers here if there are any to borrow - maybe with flippers I would feel a bit braver.

as it is, I am hanging out for my two snorkle trips next week!!!

Yes, borrow flippers.

They'll add real mobility and thus boost confidence too.

If they're a bit too big for you, try wearing socks as well. They'll fill in the space.

I wouldn't want to go out there without flippers. ;)

Start out up at the Eastern end, near Bar Kanei, in the sheltered part of the bay

...and maybe try to stay up that end?

Get your partner to go out with you!!

If I wasn't recovering from eye surgery 2 wks. ago,

I would offer to go with you, since I haven't been out there in awhile

but I reaallyy don't want to mess with pressure differentials within the confines of the mask!

The snorkling sounds wonderful. I don't swim, but I just have a life jacket on and flippers and I have snorkled in the past. Does that not sound like a good idea?? Would there be anyplace that I could get a lifejacket??

Does that not sound like a good idea?? ===> If you can get flotation

Would there be anyplace that I could get a lifejacket?? ===> I doubt it.

To use a White House phrase... "Caution in abundance"

You're going to be something like 150-200 yds. offshore

in water around 12-15 ft. deep.

If you use flippers(greatly-improved flotation!) and an adequately functioning flotation device,

then I might say Yes go for it, but otherwise it may be wise to pass on this one

mainly because it's at least 150 yds. Out There. ;)
