WouldBeCruiser Posted January 12, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 12, 2010 We have 8 hours in Freeport and can't decide whether to book any shore excursions. We're not into swimming or any water sports, but wouldn't mind finding a nice beach, and maybe taking a look around the markets. Can we just do our own thing? Will we be able to find transportation to a beach without booking something in advance through the ship ? Something I read here in a previous post gave me the idea that we could probably just get a taxi on the pier/dock and ask the driver to take us to a nice resort. ( Of course I can't find the thread now!!!)
firefly333 Posted January 12, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 12, 2010 I think it was 7 miles into town from the port. yes, you can easily catch a cab. I wouldnt do the local bus system, just me.
sallyb Posted January 12, 2010 #3 Share Posted January 12, 2010 Please look on the ports of call boards. Freeport harbor is industrial, but they do have some shops and a small straw market. We booked an independent excursion and had a wonderful day.
golfadj Posted January 12, 2010 #4 Share Posted January 12, 2010 We were there once and not impressed. Go to the port of call pages and look around for activities.
LambKnuckles Posted January 12, 2010 #5 Share Posted January 12, 2010 Either plan on booking something or at least taking a taxi to town... There is nothing at the pier -- except cheesy stores and a bar. I chose to walk around the pier stores and then the rest of the day on board... Quite pleasant!!! But, if you want port activites -- don't expect the pier to capture your interest or give you entertainment... Now -- Nassau is TOTALLY different. I found walking straight off the ship and into town was EASY and OUTSTANDING!!!
vacruizer Posted January 12, 2010 #6 Share Posted January 12, 2010 The weather wasn't great when we were in Freeport so after a quick stroll through the market by the pier (VERY nice and friendly vendors - much better vibe than Nassau) I was fascinated by sitting on our balcony and watching the works of the port. But it's very industrial. I spent several hours watching the tugs bring in container ships, the cranes unloading, checked out an old casino ship docked nearby, the drydock facilities, etc. But I like stuff like that - most people would probably want to take a cab somewhere. *Mach* Posted January 12, 2010 #7 Share Posted January 12, 2010 We did the all inclusive at the Wyndham Viva Fortuna. Had a great time. The cab fare as $12/pp round trip. :)

( Of course I can't find the thread now!!!) We took a cab (van) to the Westin hotel and hung out on the beach for the day. Paid a few dollars for a couple chairs for my wife and myself and when I gave the guy a $5 tip he gave us another chair for free for my son. Cleveland Joe Posted January 12, 2010 #9 Share Posted January 12, 2010 We paid $5.00 per person each way and took a can (van) from the port to the beach outside of the Grand Bahama hotel. It wasn't a problem at all--don't pay for the shore excursion to the beach!
imsulin Posted January 12, 2010 #10 Share Posted January 12, 2010 Just curious -is the My Lucaya resort still there? I haven't been there, but it was heavily advertised in the early 2000's as an A/I. They offered package deals with air, mainly from SE cities. TIA.
