starboard59 Posted January 12, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 12, 2010 Hi, My daughter needs to work some while cruising and asked me this: i need to figure something out for work and could use your help. 1) if i get my email through blackberry, do i have to pay the per minute fee of 2.50? 2) how do they bill the phone service? does it get billed to me as one of the passenger charges that i'd have to pay on board, or do the charges go to the phone bill? thanks! discjoker Posted January 12, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 12, 2010 1) Email to Blackberry will incur data roaming charges and not a per minute charge. I am not sure what that data charge is. 2) All billing will be to your cell phone bill.

Rare sparks1093 Posted January 12, 2010 #4 Share Posted January 12, 2010 From what I've read there is an addtional charge by the provider of the cruiseship's service that is quite expensive. I remember reading recently about someone that had a $3700 phone bill from data usage.
DMAB Posted January 12, 2010 #5 Share Posted January 12, 2010 Your daughter should contact her cell phone service provider and NCL and check on the rates. Be sure NCL understands which cell provider she is using. If she gets the same answer form both places, it's probably the correct rate. If she gets different answers, then she needs to keep digging. Here is NCLs page on the topic. http://164.109.173.140/PDF/freestyle_cellular_service.pdf Here is Verizons http://b2b.vzw.com/international/Roaming/rates_coverage.html She should also see if there is a monthly rate available for email while roaming on the ship. It could save her a lot of money over paying by the message.
martinchem Posted January 12, 2010 #6 Share Posted January 12, 2010 Your cell provider will give you rates. Texting is a lot cheaper than calling, don't know about email. I wait till we get to a US port then go through all my calls, email and texts since at those ports TMobile doesn't have extra fees, that includes San Juan and St. Thomas. kitty9 Posted January 12, 2010 #7 Share Posted January 12, 2010 Data downloading will cost her a huge amount of money using a cell phone. I personally found this out when I used my iPhone or Blackberry to get my email. I came home to a phone bill of nearly $1000 for the iPhone and over $650 for the Blackberry, and this was only for downloading email, not surfing the web or using the phone for calls. Your daughter would find it cheaper to use the ship's computers for her email. She can write her mail off line and then only go on line to send it. Plus, it's cheaper for her to read her email using the computers.
