Carnival Cruise Ship Collides with Dock in St. Kitts

Just off the Miracle. The ship docked this morning at 9:15. The accident was only a slight inconvenience. It did give us the opportunity to have dinner on the island, which was great. The ship operated as if it was at sea. The casino and shops opened at 3 p.m. We departed the island about 7:30 a.m.

At the past guests party Captain Volpe indicated he didn't relinquis control to the pilot. He actually was quite funny about the incident. It was really not a problem for any of us aboard. I was actually hoping for another beach day. As you can imagine, the rumors were really flying on cockleshell beach and on the ship and at the various bars near the dock.

It was really a great cruise.

gotta go getting ready to head to the airport and back to reality,

Thanks for the update. I was wondering if Captain Volpe was the captain of the Miracle at this time. We so enjoyed sailing with him on the Miracle in Oct. 2008. He is my favorite captain so far. He is an excellent captain, so I'm sure there was a good reason why things went wrong that day. I'm glad you enjoyed your cruise. Is Wilbur the pig still at the Reggae Bar?

Wilbur was still there in October. He was so cute!! The beach itself isn't so great with the locals hounding and the sand, but the water is nice and it's a lot of fun.

It was windy the morning of the St. Kitts accident, with gusts in the 35-40 knot range. My wife and I were on our balcony watching as we were docking, and heard the noise but did not feel anything at all. The Captain accepted full responsibility, and crew and staff did what they could to make the best of the situation. A few passengers were frustrated because their cabin steward, waiter, bartender, black jack dealer, etc., did not have more information than what was delivered by the Captain periodically. All in all, I think Carnival handled everything very well. Personally, I can think of much worse things than getting stuck in St. Kitts for a while longer than planned.

Have we seen a photo of the patch yet? Or better photos of the gash?

I'm figuring they should be scheduling a dry dock for permenant repairs on or abour 3/28, right? ;-)

HaHa, just my luck too, we are scheduled for a 3/28 departure too:D I will lend them my curb feelers if we set sail.:p

Just off the Miracle. The winds were exceptionally strong that morning. they were coming straight of the starboard side. Think of the square footage from the side of the ship that wind was blowing against. I'm no physicist but 35 knot winds blowing directly into the side of the ship = a whole heck of a lot of force pushing the ship sideways. Overall, I thought the crew did an exceptional job handling the situation. Capt. Volpi was very humble and funny about it. I did hear that we were still taking on water on the way back. I do have some long range video footage from the Ft. Lauderdale water taxi of the additional welding repairs that were taking place while in Port Everglades yesterday.

Ditto.

We were on the cruise as well. Captain Volpi did a fantastic job of keeping the passengers updated on the situation. It was not even an inconvenience for us. We were just glad that no one was injured. The Captain made good time coming back to Ft. Lauderdale and people were arriving to board as we were waiting for our car service.

Overall, it was a fantastic cruise. The food was the best I've had and this was our 3rd time on the Miracle. The only minor complaint I had and I stress minor is that the common restrooms, especially near the casino could have had more frequent attention in cleaning.

If you have any questions, let me know.

yes i know new is a relative term, that is why i put it in quotation marks... i just found the whole thing to be a little ironic. a new captain comes on and during his first sail this happens.. thats all .

I was on this sailing, and the captain was not a new captain. He has been a captain for over 35 years, and he just got back from vacation. I felt really bad for him. He is a very sweet and humble man. He actually was navigating the ship, not the pilot, and admitted to this. I thought Carnival did a very good job getting the repairs done and still making it back to port on the scheduled day, though we were later arriving than scheduled.
