Have any of you heard an news about what's happening with the redevelopment project at Harrison's Cave or when they might re-open to vistors?

We'll be there in late March and I'm holding off on making our final plans for our day in Bardados hoping that they'll have it open. Thanks for any word.

I know, I don't think the regular staff is working. I've even tried to sift through one of the newspapers online with no luck at all. I was hoping that a cc member from the island would see this and reply. Let's hope aplmac or bajan keith chime in if they know anything. ;)

mooveebuff...no one seems to know when the caves are going to reopen. I had read a while back that it was to reopen in January but January has come and gone and as far as I am aware they have still not reopened:rolleyes::(.

We will just have to wait and see. Maybe aplmac may have some more info once he checks in here.

Thanks Keith- I've happened upon another cruisers forum and one cruiser posted that her Feburary HAL excursion to Harrison's Cave was cancelled. Another poster said she thought they would not be open before Easter.

I think I will still wait till the last minute, but go ahead an figure out our plan B.

I booked a tour on Barbados and the company said that Harrison's Cave was slated to open on February 22, 2010. With fingers crossed.

Honestly with Harrison's caves you just never know:(.

If I were you I would take the position of mooveebuff and have a plan b in place.

The Glory Tours website is stating that the cave will re-open "March 2010", with no actual date given.

Oh well, it just gives us an excuse to return to Barbados someday to see what we missed the first time around. This island is very abundant in fun and interesting activities and attractions; it seems like you could visit for a week or more and not run out of things to do. We are really excited about this port of call.:)

it seems like you could visit for a week or more and not run out of things to do. ===> Yes, very much so!

Many cruisers do return to enjoy the island to its fullest.

Barbados has been a busy island now for a few hundred years

but since development of tourism over the last 40-50 yrs. there's lots of stuff for visitors to do as well.

A week in a small hotel somewhere along the South Coast somewhere

will do you nicely.

This renovation at Harrison's Cave is a biggie. Seriously.

They're doing big stuff that might have been done at the outset, 30 yrs. ago

when no-one expected it would ever attract such a volume of visitors.

So let's give it a chance to finish properly, once and for all -and be done!

It's a great shame y'all will miss it, if you're here before opening date

but the end result should be worth it for your next visit.

That would be great if it is open next week.

I was wondering how much time should I set aside for a tour of the caves (including travel time to and from ship)?

Is it best to just grab a cab to go out there?

I made a plan B of going on the Alantis sub. I am wondering if I will have time for both?

I was wondering how much time should I set aside for a tour of the caves

(including travel time to and from ship)? ===> 2-3 hours?

Is it best to just grab a cab to go out there? ===> Yes. It's called Quick.

I made a plan B of going on the Alantis sub.

I am wondering if I will have time for both? ===> SUPER Day, dude!

It's possible to do both, but I wouldn't plan on doing much else.

The cave is pretty much dead-center of the island,

and travel time each way is going to be 25mins./half-hour approx, per direction,

unless traffic is miraculously light that day(Sunday?) :)

..........................

The Atlantis sub base is very close to the Port.

Don't know how to advise you which to do first, H.Cave? or the Sub?

Depends on how bookings are for each attraction that day.

get to a phone and start asking questions, I'd say.

Might be best to make an early start, and do the Cave first?

-that'll probably take 2 hrs. all told(incl. transp. there and back...maybe longer)

and then finish up with an afternoon dive on the sub, right close to the ship?

SUB-675.jpg

Here's the sub being towed out to their dive site, early in the morning.

However you do it, it'll be a super, very contrasting day ashore, that's fer sure!

Just heard on local TV that they've spent 85 million Barbados Dollars on the H.Cave renovation.

That's 42.5 million bucks Real Money (USD). ;)

Admission is now Bds.$ 50 for locals/residents

(presumably upon presentation of Barbados ID card)

and US$30 = Bds.$60 for visitors.

Seems to that although it was "officially" opened Saturday evening

it's not quite quite ready for visitor traffic

so don't get all excited, re. visiting it for the next week or so 'twould seem.

We're getting there...eventually.

Here I thought I had it all worked out. I let the cave go. I moved on. I found a really nice tour and booked it; including a deposit. So I come back over to this board because, truth be told, I think I love this island without ever having been there. I blame that on you aplmac! ;)

So what should I do...now that it appears the cave will be open the day we're in Barbados 03.31.10. Should I scrap everything and start over? Should I try to work with the company I booked with to modify our tour? Or should I simply except that this is how it's gone down and go with what I've got; leaving the cave as a lure to come back someday?

I'm kinda leaning toward the latter. As with anything new and improved seems to attract everyone and their brother and there will be 3 ships in port that day. In addition, I'm sure they will be working out the kinks with a brand new facility and operations at the cave. None the less, I would like to know what some of you are thinking on this matter. I've got time on my side; what would you do?

Moovvee...

Sounds like maybe you should stick with what arrangement you currently have

and, as you say, keep the Caves thing as a lure for later on sometime (your future one-week stay on da islan?)

-and to let the Caves work out the kinks in their new operation as you so perceptively pointed out!

If both you and the Caves have time on your side, there's no rush,is there? ;)

OK. Agreed, whew, glad that's over.

Now, aplmac, is your wife still working in the artist/gift shop at Earthworks? ===> Yes, but..

The tour I booked stops there.

I would make a special effort to introduce myself to her if she's there that day. :D

Madam is flattered, but 31st.March is a Wednesday.

She works Thurs and Fridays, steadily, fixed arrangement

-and some Wednesdays

but won't know about Your Wed. fer sure, until closer to the day

so we'll have to keep in touch on that one.
