dixie54 Posted February 11, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 11, 2010 We haven't been to Galveston in a while. Wondering if there is construction on I 45. If so, what would be the best way to go? We live north of Houston. thanks

marimojo Posted February 11, 2010 #4 Share Posted February 11, 2010 There is always construction on 45, there is a website you can check for accidents and road closures - http://www.dot.state.tx.us/travel/road_conditions.htm I usually allow an extra hour to get to Galveston -
Jimnbigd Posted February 11, 2010 #5 Share Posted February 11, 2010 In warmer weather, I-45 southbound to Galveston can get crowded and backed up on weekends.
nomoreknothead Posted February 11, 2010 #6 Share Posted February 11, 2010 We have driven every way imaginable and the best way is straight down I-45. Construction or no construction.....It's still a pain. We shoot for early morning, as in EARLY morning!
jlbkty Posted February 11, 2010 #7 Share Posted February 11, 2010 We live in Katy, but go to church in League City. After church on Sunday, it seems the traffic heading south towards Galveston is pretty clogged. Even during the non-summer/spring months. If you can leave early, it's best. It's not horrible, but if you don't have to deal with traffice, why would you?!! We will be heading that way for a 3/7/10 cruise, so we will leave Katy no later than 9:00 in order to miss the rush. Enjoy your cruise!! :p
matj2000 Posted February 11, 2010 #8 Share Posted February 11, 2010 I go south on 45 every so often from The Woodlands to downtown Houston. No matter what day or time I go, my car comes to a "complete" stop at least twice. Every single time I head towards Galveston or Clear Lake area I hit bumper-bumper traffic for a minimum of 4 miles(mostly longer). And the worst part is that I never figure out what caused it... sgermic Posted February 11, 2010 #9 Share Posted February 11, 2010 I'm originally from Spring, TX so I'm very familiar with I-45 (unfortunately). I agree that a straight shot is best. Depending on what part of North Houston you live in, a combination of 45 + toll roads could be beneficial.
Tucker in Texas Posted February 12, 2010 #10 Share Posted February 12, 2010 Don't know when you are going but Mardi Gras is this weekend and that could impact traffic. They call I-45 the "401K highway" down here because you start your working life on it and you retire still working on it. Tucker in Texas
