Read the whole thread and there seem to be some knowledgeable people around so I hope one of you can help me out. Staying at the Flamingo and looking for somehwere for dinner that is within walking distance and nicer than the buffets.....but not too nice, IYKWIM ;), and also a bit on the quiet side. Doesn't have to be gourmet food either, just decent food and a bit laid back.:)

My favorite place to dine off strip is Lawry's Prime Rib--quiet and great food--but probably not in walking distance of the Flamingo.

Why don't you post this question on the Las Vegas forum of www.tripadvisor.com

Good point...I just don't feel like hooking up with another forum.;)

Someone always seems to come along on CC that can answer anything.:)

OP when you mention walking remember Aug 1-5 should be 110+ degrees so plan ahead, plenty of H2O and find the A/C. If your not used to the heat be careful and the sun can be brutal you don't want to start your cruise with a killer sunburn.

Ilheartbda all of the casinos have multiple food establishments in addition to buffets. There is a Margaritaville right in the Flamingo although it is not quiet it is fun and the food is pretty good "comfort" food. The Flamingo is right across the strip from the forum shops at Ceaser's Palace there are a number of really good places to eat at all price ranges and it is away from the casino vibe.

Hi Thesawch :)

I recommend staying at the M Resort and Spa that's located at the very south end of the Las Vegas strip. You will have easy access to the main strip if you just drive north on the Las Vegas strip. Another hotel is Southpoint which is also south of the strip. That hotel has bowling alley and movie theater for you DD's. Away from the strip (south) is Green Valley Ranch (Henderson area) and you have the District next door with some great restaurant's and shopping.

We always suggest to our friends when they come to Vegas to stay at the South part of the strip or surrounding area and avoid the actual strip because you can always get better rates and if you want the strip action it's just down the street. Can you tell that the locals avoid the strip LOL!!

If you want to stay in the heart of the strip, I suggest checking out the MGM, Wynn or Mandalay Bay. I personally prefer the Wynn and Mandalay Bay. There's great shopping at the Fashion Show Mall that's across from the Wynn and the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace (my personal favorite). You can sometimes get good rates on Vegas dot com or just book directly.

I personally would not stay anywhere at the most north part of the strip (old section).

Have a great time :)

Hello,

I also like the Golden Nugget. This hotel really does have it all at a reasonable price. The only down side is that to get anywhere you must either rent a car (smart)or use public transit (good, but do you really want to wait fot busses) on vacation?

So many hotels have low rates booking directly, especially mid-week, the last time we went to LV we didn't see an advantage to using Priceline or Hotwire (we've used both in many other locations). We had stayed on the Strip several times, so decided to stay at the Golden Nugget this time and enjoyed it, and the nearby Fremont Street Experience. If you haven't been to LV before, the Strip might be best. Of course "best" would be different for different people. BTW, if you stay at the Nugget, or anyplace else downtown, you do not necessarily need a car. There is a shuttle bus that runs between downtown hotels and the Strip, at a low cost. On the Strip, thre are shuttles, and also the grossly overpriced monorail. If you'd like to get an idea of what hotels you might get through Priceline or Hotwire, based on others' experiences, look at http://www.betterbidding.com. The point about the heat is a good one. I'd want to book directly with a hotel so I know where I'd be staying, since I'd be staying inside the hotel during the day. The Golden Nugget's pool has a waterside tube that goes through an aquarium with sharks in it.
