Anyone been to St. T during Carnival on the island?

We will be in St. T during the Carnival on the island. How does it effect the island during the celebration? Will traffic be effected? I am concerned about booking a private excursion and getting back to the ship on time because of possible Carnival events that might cause traffic jams. Any advise on this?
