We will be visiting Cadiz on our cruise this summer. We would like to visit Seville don't usually do shore excursions. However it seems like it is quite a distance. Is there much to see in Cadiz or in a nearby town? Thanks for your help.

All depends on the length of your stop. Seville is close to 2 hrs o/w by either train or bus. We were in Cadiz on NCL Jade in late Aug 09. I know that some people on our ship had organized a very reasonable private tour to Seville. Website is http://www.lifestylesevilla.com/ Company provided a 20+ seater bus for Sevilla excursion with port of Cadiz pickup. Cost was in 55-60 euro pp ballpark. Join roll call for for ship and you may find other cruisers willing to join.

Old Cadiz is quite small; 2-3 hrs in town is more than enough. Beach in new Cadiz is about 30 min walk from port and is ok. Jerez is 45 away; cruisers go there to visit bodegas (Tio Pepe, etc) and see Andalusian horses.

There are so many sights to be seen in Cadiz you could easily spend a number of days in the town.

For an overview you might like to look for example at http://www.lonelyplanet.com/spain/an...a/cadiz/sights

The places I enjoyed most include the Hospital de Mujeres with a masterpiece by El Greco and the Oratorio de la Santa Cueva with paintings by Goya. Kind of fun is the Camera Obscura at the Torre Tavira. The cathedrale as well as several other beautiful churches await your visit just like several museums. And do not miss the small streets, some lavishly decorated palaces etc...

We found it easy to spend an entire afternoon wandering through old Cadiz and around the fortifications. Several walking routes are marked with coloured lines, and signposted with explanations of what you are looking at. We enjoyed it very much despite it being a Sunday (shops closed) and a windy, rainy day (end of November 2009).

We too spent a nice half day there even though it started to rain & was a Sunday. Some shops were open, nice bakeries that also sold wine. There was a beautiful garden with a little snack bar at the end that sold post cards, men fishing from the seawall, monuments & a beautiful cathedral all within walking distance of the ship. It's a lovely place.

There is a round Cadiz bus tour which picks up across from the port gates by the park. Its a good way of seeing the sights and also the beaches which are lovely. Cadiz is well worth a visit on its own.
