Royal wedding in Stockholm

Recommended Posts

The wedding between HRH Crown Princess Victoria and Mr Daniel Westling will take place on June 19.

Of course this has nothing to do with cruising, but I wanted to leave this information since it will undoubtedly affect some cruise visitors this summer. And it may be nice for you to know what is going on. The festivities are planned to start on June 6, our national day. During the days just before the wedding day guests will be arriving, probably causing some problems with police escorts and security arrangements that stops the traffic. Many royals and presidents from other countries will attend the wedding.

The area most affected is expected to be in Gamla Stan, around the Royal Palace and the Cathedral. Not much is known about the exact arrangements yet and many things will probably remain secrets for security reasons.

Hi Al :)

I think the Ice Bar may be open, there should be something open for visitors to Stockholm that day. After all, they will hardly be able to see the changing of the guards on the wedding day :D.

Al, I hate it. Wish someone from above could very quickly remove all the white (or even dirty brown) stuff that now litters Stockholm. And I fear that spring will be late this year, it will take time before all this snow and ice is gone so that it can get warmer.

Interesting info on the upcoming wedding. Here are a couple pictures in and around where the wedding will happen in the large, main church in Stockholm. It could make this busy and congested area more challenging during the key wedding periods.

On the weather, we now enjoying our third straight day of wonderful sunshine in Central Ohio. There's hope that Spring and Summer are getting closer as the snow melts on the ground.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Here is the brick interior of the Saint Nicolaus Church, or as commonly known Storkyrkan. It is the oldest church in historic Gamla Stan or “old town” area.

Question for you both. I know Terry was in Stockholm during the summer months, and so was I, only a year later. In Terry's pictures they are wearing Black uniforms, but in my pix that are in Blue. Why???

Was there a change in the uniform??

Do they alternate days with different uniforms??

The duty of forming a "Royal Guard" is bestowed upon all serving regiments and occasionally on other detachments of the National Forces . However, these detachments only serve for about 5-7 days in each rotation, so the main part of the year (ca 200 days)the Royal Guard duty is being performed by the Lifeguards.

Each unit has its own uniform code.

here is a list of units. http://www.mil.se/upload/dokumentfiler/Hogvakten/Veckoprogram-v46-12.pdf

For example on 26 october 2009 it was duty of the Linköping Helicopter Flottilia to stand guard.

THANKS, for the excellent details on the differences in uniform colors! We really enjoyed the band, plus the changing of the guard. Here are a couple of my other pictures. It was a great and interesting show!!! I thought maybe the band just liked me more than Len as to why I got the darker blue uniforms in early August 2008. Guess not. Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

At Stockholm’s Royal Palace, the changing of the guard involves this large band with their unique helmets:

Hi Len,

Yeah, they change uniforms regularly. These regiments come from all over Sweden, and, well, I think they are more of a photo-op for the family to come down and watch the kids guard the palace. I have seen them out there in desert camouflage even.

Nice pix of the royal procession, you were lucky. I happened to be out one day a few years ago when the king and Boris Yeltsin trundled by in the buggy. :)

THANKS, Ultima Thule! Loved the added pictures with the Royal Family, horses, etc. Great stuff and interesting history. At one point, the Swedish "Empire" was very, very big and powerful. Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Thanks for setting the record straight for me. I really appreciate it.

I just thought maybe the time of year had something to do with it. When I was in the Air Force, I spent quite a bit of time in Britain, and used to see the Changing of the Guard quite often, but ALWAYS in winter months, when they only wore their 'grey' tunics. This year we finally made it during the summer, months and those 'red' ones really stand out.

And Terry, you are probably right, maybe they thought me the 'ugly American':):):):)

Cheers

Doubt it, Len. There's a reason why I like to take pictures, rather than being in them. It's easier on the camera!

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

  • 3 months later...

This weekend is the big wedding n Stockholm. Below are a couple of articles giving more background on the events and the Royal family there.

From the Barron's, they have an analysis looking at: Will Sweden Keeps Its Monarchy? The headline is "Royal Nuptials Relfect Swedish Rift" and it has these highlights and details: "The Swedish royal family is gearing up for the lavish wedding of its crown princess Saturday, even as more citizens are saying the country should divorce itself from the monarchy. The royal family is something of an anachronism in a country that prides itself on being one of the most equal in the world. For decades, a majority of Swedish lawmakers have been in favor of abolishing the monarchy, but no political party has had the stomach to pursue it."

From the AFP French Newswire, they have this headline: "No rush on Stockholm hotel rooms ahead of royal wedding" with these highlights: "Swedish flags inundate the streets of Stockholm and local media are abuzz with wedding fever, but Crown Princess Victoria's wedding on Saturday has so far failed to fuel an expected tourist boom to the Nordic capital. Speaking to Swedish radio, the director of the city's five star Hilton hotel said bookings were as on a normal June weekend, with Victoria's big day reportedly drawing fewer visitors than the Stockholm Marathon."
