Carnival Australia has just announced that Cunard's Queen Mary 2 will make Australia her "home away from home" in 2012 with a world first 'Royal Circumnavigation' to depart from Sydney on 14 Feb 2012.

The voyage will see QM2 return to Sydney, Fremantle, Adelaide and the Whitsundays, as well as making maiden calls at Cairns, Melbourne, Darwin and Brisbane.

Fares for the voyage will be available ex Sydney, Fremantle and Adelaide, with Carnival Australia ceo Ann Sherry saying that it will deliver an "economic windfall" for Australia.

Regards

Michael

In the Sydney Morning Herald.

Interesting. Sounds like the itinerary is Cape Town - Fremantle - Adelaide - Melbourne - Sydney - Brisbane - Whitsunday Islands - Cairns - Darwin - Bali - Fremantle - Adelaide - Sydney.....(Freo/Adelaide & Sydney get two visits.) Then where? Across the South Pacific?

Well.. either that... or the old repatriation run back to Soton to start the April ta schedule.

Its almost the same distance Sydney-Southampton via either Cape Horn or the Cape of Good Hope - of course via Suez its shorter - but why go back to Sydney if they are doing a circumnavigation - that completes at Freo?

And they would get to cross the Great Australian Bight three times!

No doubt all will be revealed in due course.....

Some more information.

Australian travellers will also [in addition to Fremantle, Adelaide or Sydney] be able to join Queen Mary 2 as she sails to Australia from Cape Town, and as she departs Sydney on March 7, 2012, bound for Singapore

March 7th to Singapore.....so I guess its back through Suez & the Med....

More, with a nice photo of Captain Bates....

Dates:

8 Feb: Fremantle

11 Feb: Adelaide

14 Feb: Sydney

28 Feb Fremantle

3 Mar Adelaide

7 Mar Sydney

Australia has been chosen as

the Southern Hemisphere

home for the Queen Mary 2,

which will offer its first-ever

cruise around the country in

2012.

CUNARD LINES WORLD-FAMOUS QUEEN MARY 2

will grace Australian waters for a record 28

days in 2012 – the longest time spent in one

country outside her home-ports in the UK

and US.

The ocean liner is extending her season

here with a ‘Royal Circumnavigation of

Australia’, calling at eight ports, including

maiden visits to Melbourne, Brisbane,

Darwin and Cairns (Yorkey’s Knob).

QM2 will also make two visits each to

Fremantle, Adelaide and Sydney, allowing

passengers to board from any of these cities

for the history-making voyage.

With itinerary details yet to be finalised,

the circumnavigation is expected to open for

sale in mid-2010; however, registrations of

interest will be accepted online from this

Friday (see website below).

The big news was revealed yesterday

onboard the QM2, while docked in Sydney,

by Ann Sherry, chief executive officer of

Carnival Australia, which represents Cunard

locally.

“The world’s most famous ship, the QM2,

in 2012 is calling Australia its home away

from home,” Sherry said.

“She will spend 28 days in Australia – the

longest deployment outside the Northern

Hemisphere, outside her homes of

Southampton and New York.”

This decision would generate $10 million

for the economy, Sherry said.

“The world’s most famous ship,

the QM2, in 2012 is calling

Australia its home away from

home”

The three 2012 circumnavigation options,

to be confirmed, are a 22-night voyage

departing Sydney on 14 February; a 20-

night voyage departing Fremantle on 08

February; and a 21-night voyage departing

Adelaide on 11 February – as well as a precircumnavigation

cruise from Cape Town to

Australia, and a post-circumnavigation

cruise from Sydney to Singapore.

Once you get past the 'airline' food that's not a bad trip at all....loved stopping off in the middle of nowhere......and the track is a LOT better than the Ghan or over the Blue Mountains!
