wongri Posted March 11, 2010 #1 Share Posted March 11, 2010 Hello CC friends, We will be on Constellation Baltic cruise this August and would like some advice on whether we should include a tour of the Diamond room at the Hermitage. Is it worth the extra admission and time? What is there to see? Many thanks!
NancyIL Posted March 11, 2010 #2 Share Posted March 11, 2010 Do you mean the GOLD room? We opted not to do it.

Rare TLCOhio Posted March 11, 2010 #4 Share Posted March 11, 2010 Hello CC friends,We will be on Constellation Baltic cruise this August and would like some advice on whether we should include a tour of the Diamond room at the Hermitage. Is it worth the extra admission and time? What is there to see? Many thanks! Agree with Nancy that you are probably asking about the Gold Room. We visited Moscow during our visit to Russia and saw the famed eggs, crowns and other items there at the Kremlin, making the need to see the Hermitage's Gold Room less important. There are lots and lots of great items, plus grand rooms there at the Hermitage. It depends on your personal interests and tastes. You can't see and do it "ALL" on your first visit to St. Petersburg. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
wongri Posted March 11, 2010 Author #5 Share Posted March 11, 2010 Apparently aside from the Gold room there is a Diamond room. So not sure if worth the $25 for admission. Rita
Giantfan13 Posted March 12, 2010 #6 Share Posted March 12, 2010 I agree with the other posters, never heard of it. it was never even offered to us. and as Terry has made mention of, there is just so much to see in the Hermitage, 10 hours still wouldn't do it justice. Don't try and see it all. Cheers Len

BUT, in two or three hours within the Hermitage, you'll see most of the key highlights, for BOTH its art treasures and the great palace interior architecture. If you look at the Hermitage's website, you will find more "The Treasure Gallery". It notes: "The Treasure Gallery, one of the most interesting collections of the museum, got its name in the 18th century during the reign of Catherine the Great. It consists of two sections. The first, called the Gold Rooms has works from Eurasia, the Black Sea Littoral in antiquity, and the Orient. It consists of around 1,500 works made from gold and dating from the 7th century B.C. to the 19th century A.D. The main idea of the second section, which is called the Diamond Rooms, is to show the development of the jeweler's craft over the course of mankind's many centuries of history from the third millennium B.C. to the start of the 20th century." You can get more details at: http://www.hermitagemuseum.org/html_En/03/hm3_10-1_08.html Their website shows many pictures of this collection with added details and background. THANKS! Enjoy! NVCLVR Posted March 12, 2010 #9 Share Posted March 12, 2010 Wongri: If this is your first trip to SPB, I would pass on the Gold and "Treasure" rooms. Just pick up a tour that shows the highlights of the Hermitage. If you return, then the Gold room is wonderful to see. We had a pvt tour and you also see the Treasure room (adjacent to the Gold room) that has various jewel collections (including snuff boxes elaborately encrusted w/jewels). We loved that particular area of the Hermitage and plan on returning to see more of the Gold & Treasure Rooms on our 3rd visit. Again..for a first visit..stick w/the highlights.
