Barcelona hotel recommendations?

I will echo vote for Hotel Jazz. The top area with the pool has a great vantage point (and to the poster that walked to Sagrada Familia - more power to you, we took the subway but did have a view from the top).

There is a Starbucks nearby but adjacent to the hotel is a coffee/pastry shop and a couple deli shops (also have beer/soda/water much cheaper than the hotel).

Also as another poster mentioned, book a month or two early and you get about a 10-15% off normal price. We paid 90 euros a night.

Only problem we had is they are pretty slight on hand/shower soap so we had to continually ask for extras. You get one bar of soap about the size of a lollipop top and they did not replace it. Next time we'll probably just go get our own. As mentioned, El Corte Engles (big department store) is a short walk and we always go there anyway for other sundries (like cava :)).

Again, highly recommended. If you do plan on taking a cab from airport to the hotel, make sure you have a printed copy of your destination in hand. Tried say "Hotel Jazz" in English to the taxi driver and we had some comunication problems. Finally dug it out of the carryon with no problem.

We stayed in the Avenida Palace. First time there was in 1958, while on leave from Germany. Not far from train station, near Omonia? square and the north end of Las Ramblas.

Pricey, but my wife wanted to go back. When checking in, she mentioned our previous visit, and they gave us a suite!

Dick, did you take the duty train from Berlin to Frankfurt and then another train all the way to Barcelona???

That must have been one heck of a long ride but was probably pretty.

We stay at the Hotel Continental or Hotel Palacete. Not four star but clean, convenient (Continental is on Las Ramblas, Palacete a couple of blocks from it), has free food and beverages (including wine and beer) 24/7. Rates run from 90-135 euro per night. Taxi is 15 euros to port. Bus from airport is 5 euros per person to Plaza Catalunya which is a short walk to the hotel. Big department store across the Plaza which has a good supermarket to pick up last minute items. You will find a lot of cruisers staying there.

We stayed at the Continental and it was great. It has atmosphere not standard modern hotel. There was a great Tappas Bar 1 or 2 blocks down Las Ramblas.

George-

No, I was stationed at Herzo Base, near Nurnberg. We drove a long way- through and across France, then to a small Spanish fishing village for a few days, then to Barcelona for a couple days.

Never got to Berlin--wasn't allowed to take the duty train on leave, and couldn't figure a way to get TDY authorized.
