MacysMimi Posted March 24, 2010 #1 Share Posted March 24, 2010 Has anyone stayed in the Howard Johnson's in Galveston??? It was recommended by some folks on our roll call, but when I went to TripAdvisor to look it up, it has a lot of very negative reviews......I realize reviews are very subjective, but I don't want to be disappointed....They have a really good rate if you book a non-refundable, non-cancelable fare.....bout $20.00 cheaper than the other rate and I'm trying to save all the money I can.... Any feedback or tips would be appreciated.
firefly333 Posted March 24, 2010 #2 Share Posted March 24, 2010 It was ok, but we had mosquitoes out the kazoo last Sept. Nothing special and it has a free breakfast and you can park there free, and the parking lot across the street (discount parking), will shuttle you to the port and back for $5 pp. Its a good deal, but there are cheaper places, like EconoLodge which also has free parking and is 500 yds from the beach/ocean wall. Hmmmm, may have to check out that EconoLodge.....I stayed at the Hampton Inn last year, but only because I had a coupon for a free night....this year I'm not splitting the rates with anyone, so I'm trying to be frugal...lol

CGBCruiser Posted March 25, 2010 #5 Share Posted March 25, 2010 Just a thought from me for what it's worth...I wouldn't want to leave my car in that parking lot for a week. I don't think it's the best place in town to leave a vehicle...would only leave it in a lot down there that has a fence and security!

CGBCruiser Posted March 25, 2010 #7 Share Posted March 25, 2010 I thought that The Galvez did offer free parking and did have a shuttle to the pier. Maybe they've quit offering those amenities, but I know people that parked in their parking garage at one time. Hmmmm.... Patty...Well, we haven't stayed there since November 2008, so maybe it has changed. We stayed at the Hilton Resort last year, and will do so this September, also. And, they do have free parking and a shuttle. I think they share it with the Holiday Inn...I'm not sure. I called each property listed using their local number; the rep I spoke to at the Galvez stated they had neither cruise parking nor shuttle available. Maybe at the Galvez, they are like the IRS...ask ten different people the same question, get ten different answers!;) As you can see, others have also had different experiences. firefly333 Posted March 27, 2010 #14 Share Posted March 27, 2010 Its great that there are rates posted for one particular date, but as said before YOUR night might vary greatly. I stayed at Howard Johnsons last Sept for $63? ($75 with tax). I stayed at Quality Inn and Suites Beachfront for $45 in January. I have EconoLodge booked for $40 next Sept. My rates as you can see vary quite a bit from what is posted. (as in not even close). supply and demand changes them from month to month by a lot. Nice list but call anyway, or do a search online. I paid less in every case than what was posted.

Thats why I paid so much for a lower star hotel in Sept vs less in January for a primo hotel. The same hotel I paid $45 for in January wanted $145 my date in Sept .. exactly $100 more .. because of the beach.
