Omg you're just like me. He insists on carrying all the paperwork so that I can just carry a small purse but I check and check and as soon as I get to the airport I take control of those passports.

As we went to get ready to get off our flight to NYC last month the lady opposite me declared she couldn't find her passport. There were only 12 of us in the section and we all searched and nothing. She lost it somewhere between going through the gate and boarding.

This also happened last May, a lady getting on our plane lost it between security and the gate and couldn't board, her teenager and mum boarded and she was left behind. The crew were brilliant bringing updates that she'd made it to the embassy and that she'd got a passport and the flight she'd be on

Hence I never let them out of my small purse

I have also witnessed someone backtracking through an airport searching for a lost passport. Luckily for them, they had it in hand from coming through security and set it down when paying for gum at a kiosk in the terminal. As they were walking up the girl working the register there spotted them and yelled, "I knew you'd be back!" while waving the passport.

That was the day I ordered my travel neck pouch. It is the one piece of travel gear that has been with me through it all. I wear it to airports, cruise terminals, concerts, the theater, and just pretty much anything where I have tickets, a passport, a pass, or any sort of must have little piece of paper to keep track of. All I can say is 20 years of travel and shows, and I've never lost track of anything yet. Now that I am getting older, I am especially grateful for it. I may forget what I was after when I walk in room, but I've got all my necessary documents on me. :D

I remember some of the things I did on a first cruise that I see people doing now and I wonder whether it's a first cruise thing or just people don't ever move on

I found a place to sit with my hand luggage waiting to hear my cabin was ready - I didn't realise I could explore. Lots of people sit around particularly in the atriums

Getting up at 5 am to see the sail ins to every port - I'm not up at that time now so not sure how many do it

Highlighting the newspaper to check off everything I had to fit in and God forbid there was a clash

Moaning about sea days, why did we have them - now I love them

Booking all excursions through the ship, going through the list onboard ticking them all off and booking and being surprised when someone says you could book independently

I'm not sure finding a place to sit with some hand luggage is a new cruiser thing. We ended up sitting talking with some folks on their 30th cruise right after boarding on our last. We, like them, originally picked a seating area in the atrium somewhat near the restrooms so that we could take turns watching our boarding bag while the other went to the restroom. It was quite enjoyable and it just seemed polite after each of us had been chatting with one of their party for the four of us to sit and chat a bit before we each wandered off on our respective exploration of the rest of the ship.

Truth is.... we were all "newbies" at one time.

Hope I was able to give some Old Saltie a smile while I was enjoying my first cruise because I was having the time of my life!

Who cares what the so called old salts think or anyone for that matter. We go on cruise to have fun and enjoy are selfs not to impress people who are diamond or what ever. Some people act like taking a cruise takes some kind of skill or something ,Maybe that's part of the fun is figuring things out on your own and experiencing new things. But lets all sit sit back in our own little diamond worlds and poke fun at people that have not taken a million cruises and are there to just have fun:eek:

I got one after I lost my driver's license while traveling. I keep my passport card in it for ID.

We will be going on our 15th cruise next month and I always carry a small crossbody purse around the ship. I've read through all these posts and still can't figure out why carrying a purse makes one look like a newbie.

We also take a lot of our excursions through the cruise line. We just prefer the security that we WILL be back on the ship even if the excursion is late!

I agree. Same with wearing nautical themed clothing...where is it more appropriate?

Speaking as someone who's just lost their cruise virginity (in the Rocky Horror Picture Show sense, that is ;))...

In my case, between lurking for the better part of a year on CC and in-laws who do the cruise thing, I did sort of know what to expect (the good and the "gotchas"). That said--you can only really prepare yourself so much by reading and talking to others.

I am actually quite grateful for some of the hints and kinks I've seen from other folks who've done cruises (buffet on embark day is a madhouse so grab food at the Lido, your room won't be ready for a while so explore/orient yourself whilst waiting, you can get more than one thing at dinner for sampling, etc.) to try to not be as much of an ANNOYING newbie.

Not a cruise virgin but I do like to carry my lanyard. I did learn on my 2nd cruise to get a free one from the casino. I like to "ohh and ahh" when I first get on :) I did my research about the sail away drinks and said no at first but then got one because it was my 1st cruise and it was before carnival had the cheers program. I now know that I can get the DoD in a regular cup. On my first cruise I HAD to get All of the special cups :) ya live ya learn.

I plan on making a door decoration warning my fellow passengers that we are cruise novices (thought virgin might be a problem for some travelers) and might be caught ...

Taking too many pictures

Hoarding towel animals

having too much luggage etc.

Please help me add to the list things that scream first cruise! Please keep it clean.

You might be caught...

With the deck plan map pinned to your shirt

Buying one drink at a time

Wearing socks

Asking how to find your cabin

I like you... :D

That said, our most recent cruise followed a Noro outbreak on the Crown. We were quite amazed, knowing that, at the number of folks who just had to blow that whistle at muster. But I'm sure they cleaned and sanitized it first...

Not sure if oblivion, or complete disregard, regarding Noro by some is a sign of newbies or entitleds... We saw plenty of both

This is my first cruise with my DH. Thanks for all of the great tips. One question. A cruiser on here said to wear the life jacket and another said do not. We are sailing on the Star Princess in September. Do we wear the jacket or carry it to the muster drill?

Frankly, and with great respect to all who are giving great advice, it doesn't bother me to be pegged as newbies. In addition to our first cruise, we have been married 43 years and will be renewing our vows. So we plan to make lasting memories. I may just stop when entering the ship and stare and let people walk around me. Okay, that was a bit extreme (I think), lol. Enjoy the cuteness of all the newbies and their newbie ways. :)

Here's a funny take on the being a cruise virgin......

My DH pretended to be a "cruise virgin" on our recent carnival breeze holiday sailing (which was most definitely not our first!)

Poor ice cream machine :-)

Absolutely loved your Video. On a cold Valentine's Day in the UK when we're expecting snow

SusieQ, different ship lines have different rules. Last few times on NCL, we were told not to wear or take our life jackets to muster drill. They demonstrate how to wear them. It also stops people trying out the whistles. [emoji40]

Have a wonderful time and congratulations on your long marriage. We are heading for 48 this June. [emoji512]
