Tram 3T/B to Sibelius Monument

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Could you tell me what the walking distance is from Tram 3B/T stop (#10 I believe) to the monument?

I thought I read here on the boards that the stop is 1/2 mile away, so a 10-12 minute walk might be possible. I think the poster gave the directions right to the park. I have them at home.

On another site it said the monument is 2 miles away. I'm thinking that the poster meant 2 miles from the city square, not from the tram stop.

Could someone who has visited or is familiar with the route give me the correct information? I would hate to miss the ship because I misunderstood the directions.

Thanks!

Its 3T stop named "Töölön halli". Its not optimal to use the tram (Bus #14/14B is nearer) but not that far to go. Looking at Google Earth I get it to about 700 yards, (0.4 Mile) from the tram stop and about 420 yards from the bus stop (Töölön kirjasto).

From the tram stop just take the street (Humalistonkatu) left of the filling station.

Follow it three blocks, last one is slightly uphill. You'll pass a library and a park to the left. Bus #14 stops across library entrance. (Scroll picture to the left to see a yellow house)

http://maps.google.fi/maps?hl=sv&ie=UTF8&ll=60.185404,24.922142&spn=0,359.969015&z=16&layer=c&cbll=60.183907,24.918056&panoid=35WMUCgUW6fUYlVepl_Lyg&cbp=12,220.18,,0,5

and it will bend a bit to the right and end at rather wide street(Mechelininkatu). You'll see a park opposite to the left.

http://maps.google.fi/maps?hl=sv&ie=UTF8&ll=60.183408,24.916499&spn=0,359.969015&z=16&layer=c&cbll=60.183385,24.91583&panoid=WB5GWZ0UxyI8HeGCqk_4Xg&cbp=12,260.18,,0,5

Cross the road and enter the park in an angle. (Or turn left and follow Mechelininkatu downhill until park opens up and you see the monument to your right.)

Ultima Thule,

I love your google maps. It is fun "walking" to each destination. I'll add these directions to the ones I have at home. The walk from the tram should be fine, even for my in-laws.

Terry,

I knew you visited the monument because I had seen your pictures during my search earlier today. I got the impression you were on a private tour rather than on the tram.

Thanks to both of you.

Lori

Yes, we had a tour with just our samller group from the ship all around Helsinki and out to the famed architect's country/family home, lunch on the water, etc. It's great you were checking the past posts, etc. There's lots info already posted, but many don't bother to check back, nor use the search function. Let us know any other info or picture needs/interest.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

There is also a lovely little cafe across the road from the monument right beside the sea if you fance a little pick-me-up !

Also, if you take the tourist bus which will be waiting at the cruise terminal, it stops right next to the momument !

Just one more comment. Be sure to take the tram going in the right direction!

We ended up going all the way around the city without realizing untll we were half way around that I had made this mistake. The local people on the tram were very kind and helpful. Just aks or look confused.

Yes, that's important!

In this case, assuming you start off from downtown, it should be tram 3T going in direction west/north. Also note that tram 3T change name to 3B before doing the other half of the "8" and then change back to 3T again.

This is a map for tram 3T.

and for 3B:

I have a question on getting back to the ship (LHC Hernesaari) from market square area. We are catching bus #16 into Market Square and then going to use the tram to see the sites. Do we catch the same bus #16 back or is it a different number? How often do these buses run?

Thank you.

Its same number but it will take a slightly different route back because of one-way streets. Especially it returns on north side of Esplanade Park rather than on the south side.

Not too often I'm afraid. About three busses per hour. Here is a time table (it might change a bit during summer):

http://aikataulut.ytv.fi/linjat/en/h16.html

If you are near the rock church you could instead use bus 14B to return to the dock.

One more question. When we get off the 3T at the Sammonkatu stop how do we get to the Rock Church?

You should go back (i.e south) one block and then turn left onto Luther Street and uphill. There are always a lot of tourist busses parked there.

http://maps.google.fi/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=sv&geocode=&q=Runeberginkatu+31&sll=60.164187,24.942999&sspn=0.037493,0.131922&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Runebergsgatan+31,+00100+Helsingfors&ll=60.172465,24.92521&spn=0,0.020556&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=60.172297,24.923348&panoid=1I-HuWbCAAD5G9_6dQiknQ&cbp=12,87.44,,0,5

If you instead continue yet another block towards south and turn left onto Arcadia Street you'll find the stop for bus 14B southwards to the quay (Don't take bus 14 by mistake).

Ultima Thule, now I am really confused. The bus schedule you showed did not seem to have a stop at either Kauppatori (Market Square) or (Senaatintori) Senate Square. I thought that bus # 16 definitely stopped at Kauppatori. The fact that it willl only run three times an hour is not a real problem as we will not be staying until the last minute.

Any clarification you can give me on this would be helpful. Thank you.

No, just four stops are mentioned on that page. But near the top of page there should be a link: "Route maps and stop listings 16" that will take you to this page:

http://aikataulut.ytv.fi/reittiopas/en/line/?line=16&type=1

And if you go down the list you will find Kauppatori and Senaatintori listed at 11 min and 12 min from the start, (direction 1) and also Kauppatori at 21 min in direction 2

direction 1 is a medium blue line and direction 2 is a dark blue line on the map.

Hope that clarified things.

Thank you, it all makes sense now. So, now I have one more question. We are thinking of taking the 3T and doing Rock Chursch and the Silbious monument and then going to the end of 3T and getting #b back into town. Where is the best stop for us to get off around Senate Square? And how do we get from that stop to Senate Square?

Thank you again, your advice has been just great. Barbara

Here is 3B map and table and you would go in direction 2.

Go off 3B at stop named "Varsapuistikko/Fölskvären" (Foal Square). Its a small triangular park with a mare & foal statue. Go to other side of park and turn right into Union Street and follow it three blocks southwards.

Does the 3T tram become the 3B tram or do I have to get off at the end of the 3T line and get on the 3B?

It is so helpful to have someone who knows the ins and outs of getting around. Thank you so much for all of your input. Barbara

Same tram, just changes name.

In case anyone is wondering how Helsinki ended up with a tram that changes from 3B to 3T halfway through its route...

The number three route is a figure of eight. The 3B used to run in one direction and the 3T in the other. I can't say clockwise and anticlockwise, because a figure of 8 eventually goes both ways, but you get the idea.

The place where the top loop and the bottom loop were connected used to be a crossroads, but then the route was changed, so that the loops join on a flat east-west section, in front of the railway station.

From the old numbering system, you wouldn't have been able to tell whether your tram was going to turn into the north loop or the south loop, if you got on in front of the railway station. So now the numbers change at the top and the bottom of the loops, in both directions.

This is still terribly confusing to work out in your head, and I reckon it would be far more sensible to give them different stops in front of the station, one stop marked "northbound" and the other "southbound".

Anyway, it's an interesting route that goes past many of the sights of Helsinki, and wherever you get on in whichever direction, you can be sure that you'll eventually end up back there.

- Lucy
