Esphesus from Istanbul

We are staying in Istanbul for several days prior to a cruise. We would like to visit Ephesus. Has anyone had experience taking a day trip from Istanbul to Ephesusl? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am active on the Istanbul forum of sister website tripadvisor, and the experts on that forum have written about doing a long day trip by flying from Istanbul to Izmir, then traveling by rental car or with a private tour company to Ephesus, which is about one hour's drive from the Izmir airport, flying back from Izmir to Istanbul that evening.
