Protection??

With all this talk re: Norvo Virus, Norwalk, etc. I am wondering if the flu shots many of us got this year afford any protection against these virus'??

I had the flu shot......didn't make a bit of difference.

Norwalk, Novovirus, etc. are considered stomach viruses (a.k.a. stomach flu). Stomach flu and the influenza are not the same thing. Flu shot has no effect, and even if you catch stomach virus once, that doesn't make you immune from catching it again. Washing/sanitizing hands is the best defense!

Our experience based on a cruise regarding the virus - take simple precautions such as: washing your hands frequently! And when we were advised the virus was onboard - we were extremely pleased with the precautions Holland America took to help us protect ourselves. They obviously have an excellent plan in place, and advised us accordingly. For instance, in addition to the crew working very hard to sanitize hand rails, door knobs, elevator buttons, etc., etc. They distributed a notice to each cabin with information. Little details like distributing rolls at dinner with a server (as opposed to placing rolls in a basket); serving selections to each plate at the buffet (as opposed to each person helping him/her self) ...

etc.

 

They were even cautios enough to cancel a ball where one could dance with the officers in an effort to eliminate the transefer of the virus via hand contact. And they asked us to eliminate shaking hands also. Obviously a lot of thought and effort has gone into how to handle this situation.

 

So - bring along those little bottles of Purell - and use them regularly. And if you feel even more cautious, bring along a "canister" of the little toweletts of sanitizer for your cabin.

 

And remember - this is not relegated to cruise ships only. It happens regularly on land!
