norwegian smoke

Recommended Posts

I agree...smoking odor is generally not a problem. Maybe on a balcony when your neighbor is out smoking...maybe a bit in a cabin hallway when a balcony cabin door has been opened and the outside air rushes through a smoking cabin. Maybe a bit in some outdoor areas when the wind shifts.

All cabins are "smoking" on NCL. However, they do a great job of "de-smelling" a smokers cabin before the next people get in to the cabin. If that did not work for your cabin, you can request a "deep cleaing" and in a few hours (while you are out), it will be very good.

I also agree. I am not a smoker and the smell of smoke generally bothers me (sometimes to the point of getting a headache). The only place I ever smelt smoke was in the casino - and also used the 'walk quickly technique'. As a matter of fact, I didn't even know you were allowed to smoke in the rooms until after we were off the ship and I read it on a thread on here. They do an outstanding job of keeping the smokey smell contained or eliminated all together!

OP.. generally on NCL ships the smoking areas outside are on the Port side. This is true usually of all decks except the jogging track, whatever deck that might be for the ship. As far as inside public spaces, the only place I can think of is the casino, which I do have to say, even as a smoker, it can get a bit too smokey for me at times. Some NCL ships have a cigar bar which has a completely enclosed cigar smoking area. As others have said all staterooms are available to be smoked in as well as a passangers balcony. Other than that, unless I am just completely forgetting some area, the ship is a non-smoking area. I believe you will find the same smoking policies for all mass market lines with the exception of one and that is X I believe, but just can't remember 100% for sure, and I think thier ships are all smoke free. NCL's POA also has a very restrictive smoking policy, but my understanding is that has to do with it having to comply with HI's restrictive smoking policy.

i havent smelled it in the cabins ever...the only time i have been BOTHERED by the smoking was when we were on the STAR going thru the canal...i had a GREAT spot to sit and watch...after spending most of the morn and day right up front, but twice i had to move because of 'smokers'

one seem to not even care when her smoke kept hitting me right in the face even my COUGHING episode didnt budge her...i had been there for hrs!...after growing up in a household where 2 parents smoked constantly i about CHOKE on it now:eek:!

What is norwegians smoking policy. Someone told me they would never go on this cruise line again because it smelled of smoke everywhere they went. Is this tue? I may be mistaken it could of been royal carribean, not sure.

There are those there are people who have to exaggerate everything.;)

I agree with all the other posters about it not being a problem and if, in fact, it was Royal Caribbean, I didn't find it to be a problem there either.

On the Sky, the outside smoking policy was not defined well. I could never decide which side to avoid on the promenade deck since there were frequently people smoking on both side. I noticed that both sides had ash trays built into the side of the ship. There were not a lot of smokers outside, but I too get headaches triggered by smoke so I try to avoid it if I can.

The Casino smoke did seem to come out into the atrium area on the Sky. The one night we wanted to go listen to the piano play in the atrium bar, but the smell of smoke was bothering me, so we went back to the Captain Cook bar to listen to our favorite guitar player. This was the only time we were in this area at night and it was also the only time we notice smoke smell inside.

There were several times I had to move elsewhere when we were outside due to smoke, but not so much so that it was bothersome. My one wish is that the smoking rules would be well published in the daily for both smokers and non-smokers.

I did not notice any smoke smell in the room or in the hallways. I have been on several cruise lines that allow smoking in the cabins and it has never been a problem.

In the past 18 months or so, Royal has switched to non-smoking cabins and very few smoking areas inside the ship, and I didn't have a problem on either of my Royal Caribbean cruises, even the one before they became more strict with non-smoking rules.

I have not cruised Carnival up to this point and one of the reasons is that I heard from several people that many of the locations at night are very smoky. I have not experienced that for myself, but like you said, no problems on NCL or Royal for me.

Terry, just to set the record straight, X still has a couple of places one can smoke, just not in the cabins or on balconies, and the usual restrictions about dining rooms etc. but you can smoke on X.

At least on Pride of America, one of the smoking places is an outdoor bar! The other was not near anything, and in a very windy place where it was hard to light up. I only went there once because there was no amusement!

Azamara (I think owned by the same people as RCCL and Celebrity) is probably one of the most restrictive. There is a smoking area in one bar and at the "starboard forward area of the pool deck". If they weren't too rich for my blood, I would be tempted to try it out.

Royal is also smoke-free in the cabins, but has some other places you can smoke. I don't think any of the major lines are 100% smoke free.

I have to agree with you on this 100% as far as making it painfully obvious where to smoke and where not to. As a smoker, believe it or not, I totally understand how it feels to have smoke in your face when you don't want it there. I can't stand a really smokey room or area and I smoke. There have been times where I have lit up on a cruise in an area where I wasn't supposed to and felt bad about it once I found out it was a non-smoking area. I had a staff member tell me once that if there are those big ashtrays on the side of the ship, that means you can smoke there.. but I don't know if it is always the case. There are signs at most of the areas where you can smoke saying you can smoke there, but some times it does get confusing.

Thanks for letting me know. We have not looked at X as an option because we thought it was smoke free. We never smoke in the cabin so that wouldn't be an issue for us. Thats why we always have a balcony. And even then, we try not to smoke if we see people around us on their balcony.

Our experience on the Dawn was that all public indoor venues, including bars, were smoke-free with the exception of the casino. It was pretty easy to avoid the casino area though and the smoke wasn't too bad outside, though I was never sure which side it was allowed and on which side it wasn't. I don't think that was very clear to any of us.

The only other line we've been on was Carnival on the Legend and there we had a lot of issues with most of the bars, dance clubs, and lounges being smoking so if we wanted to see anything other than the main show, we would have to deal with the smoke. The casino on the Legend was in the middle of the main deck so we had to cross through it to get almost anywhere on the ship.

I appreciate your consideration. When things are designated clearly, you shouldn't feel bad if someone explains nicely that it is a non-smoking area. Hopefully the crew member was polite about it.

Other than cost, one of the reasons I haven't booked a balcony yet is that I know it is one of the few places for smokers and I would not want to have a problem with a smoky balcony, nor would I want to infringe on their location to smoke.

I figured that the big ashtrays were as good as a sign saying it was OK to smoke there, but it was on both sides of the ship, so that was confusing. Also, I never once saw a sign saying smoking was or was not allowed. Areas with tables had ash trays which to me say smoking is allowed, but other than that, we were always wondering.

From the deck plans, it looks like Maharini's Lounge & Nightclub is right next to the Casino.

Do you have to walk through the Casino to get there?

Also, has anyone noticed if the smoke from the Casino can be smelled from the nightclub?

Ann unfortunetly Maharini's lounge and nightclub is connected. They are allowed to smoke in there. It is right next to the casino, so you will smell the smoke from there too. This casino for some reason is closed in and it is really smokey. :o I don't like smoke either, but it didn't keep me out of the casino. LOL

X does allow smoking. We were on Century in January and people could smoke on the port side. The bartender at the aft bar kindly and professionally asked someone to move who was smoking on the wrong side. No smoking in the casino, which I loved.

We were on NCL Sky a few weeks ago and I didn't notice smoke at all except in the casino. It was fine until someone sat right down next to me and lit up and then I had to leave. Probably saved me some money in the long run but I do wish NCL had smoke-free casinos.

Actually on the Pearl they kind of do.. and maybe the Dawn.. On the Pearl there are slot machines in the Bliss Lounge and on another ship.. and I'm thinking it is the Dawn.. they had slot machines close to the Spinnaker Lounge.. Now I have to tell you.. I never saw anyone playing any of them.. LOL.. but they are there.. and in a smoke free area. I do feel bad for non-smokers in any ships casino (except the one reported above that has smoke free ones) because I know if it gets too smokey for me it gets horrible for them. My rule of thumb as a smoker is if I go sit next to someone in the casino.. like I just have to get on a slot machine that has someone sitting next to the one I want.. I will not smoke until they get up to leave. LOL.. please notice I said they get up to leave... that tells you once I'm on a machine I am usually there for a while. If someone comes and sits next to me and after they are there I want to smoke I literally try to do every thing I can not to let the smoke get in their face, and if I see its going to drift right to them no matter what.. I will just put it out.. NOW.. lol.. if someone comes and sits next to me while i'm smoking.. again I will do everything I can not to get it in their face.. but I will finish it.

I remember one time in Lake Tahoe I was so horrible.. I was sitting at a WoF machine and had been there an hour or longer.. and a lady came and sat at the machine right next to me while I was smoking and turned to me and said.. "Can't you just not smoke while I am sitting here?". I told her if she wanted to give me the $500.00 I had lost in this machine I would be glad to get up and leave her to it.. and went right back to smoking. LOL. Mind you there had to be 20 WoF machines right in this area and she and I were the only ones on them.. She could have sat anywhere.. oh well.. 8-)

I wish ALL casinos were smoke free !!!! :o

I do too.. it would save Doug and I A TON of money.. LOL. Would never step into one. We went to one in Santa Fe, NM once that is smoke free.. Stay and hour.. and left.. LOL.

I love the fact that most of the bars on the NCL ships are smokefree. After a lot of Carnival cruises, where most of the bars allow smoking, the freedom to enjoy the entertainment all over the ship was a delight to me.

Virginia, who hates smoke.

Boy do we wish we had people like you next to us on our last cruise on the Sky! Not only did the neighbors seem to be on the balcony smoking non-stop every time we were there (starting at 6 a.m.), but at night they switched to pot! Up close that smell is definitely not a pleasant one!

It's unfortunate that balconies can't be separated into smoking and non-smoking areas, but I'm sure it would create a nightmare for booking. We didn't let our experience spoil our appreciation of having a balcony but we're sure hoping we'll luck out and have a more smoke-free experience on our next cruise on the Dawn in Oct.

If you knew this for a fact, why didn't you contact security?

Just curious.
