Cruise insurance.

I would greatly appreciate the impressions of those who have had experiences with cruise insurance as follows:

1. What medical exigencies are covered?

2.What is the coverage if you cannot make it to the port of embarkation due to a hurricane? By the way, this question assumes that there was no interaction by Royal in the transportation to the aforesaid port.

Coverage will vary depending upon the insurer and the level/category of insurance purchased. Insuremytrip.com is a good site to check out because it allows you to do side-by-side comparisons of a number of companies and policy offerings.

First the carriers you can look at will depend upon what country you live in, and in some cases what state in the US is your home.

Each carrier will have different policies some with several different plan options.

You can in the US, specifically in Texas, you can choose from policies with primary or secondary medical coverage. If it is secondary, your primary health insurance has to see and pay or decline coverage first before the travel insurance will kick in....if you use a policy with primary, medical coverage you then send all meidcal bills to the travel insurance first.

Best bet is to look at exclusions for each policy and make sure you can live with the exclusions before you buy.

As far as hurricane coverage is concerned, better check with the individual insurance companies. My sister, who lives in Denver, was going to leave out of Galveston. She had insurance. As luck would have it, a hurricane hit Galveston just about the time she was to leave, and the ship came in about two days late. The cruise company gave a voucher to all those that couldn't or didn't want the shortened cruise for the full amount that they had spent. The insurance company did NOT compensate her for the cruise because the cruise company had already done that. The only way she could get anything out of it was to take another cruise. Needless to say, she was unhappy, but that is just the way it was.

Buying cruise insurance is a must! Last year our son and his wife were within an hour of flying out of Pittsburgh (PA) to leave for their cruise and they got word that his business partner (age 41) was killed in a snowmobile accident. Needless to say, they cancelled everything and thankfully their cruise trip insurance reimbursed them for everything. They bought their cruise insurance (online) through insuremytrip.com

Policies vary so much, you need to research what each one covers on a site like Insure My Trip. All different kinds of coverage is available, depending on what you need.

We buy insurance that includes pre-existing conditions for family members due to elderly parents. We've had to cancel at the last minute 3 times and have always been fully reimbursed. You do have to provide plenty of paperwork verifying you are cancelling for a covered reason (doctor's affadavits, etc. in our case).
