Trinkets for Cruise members

Recommended Posts

I take enough envelopes for each day we cruise, and put $$ in one each day and draw a picture (not a great artist mind you) on the front of the envelope of what we are doing that day, something funny. I also take a nice thank you card for the last day and hand it to him/her. I do this for our cabin steward. They really appreciate it!

The money or the picture?

As none of you have really changed my mind on what I want to do, You all in a round about way have given me some excellent ideas. We are priviy to some of the most wonderful made items here in the midwest. We have Lagomarcinos the finest candy one can buy made here, Several winery's not sure on this as I will be taking some on board for me to drink, So that may not work as two bottles eight days will be gone.

There are also locally based places that make wonderful dips and spreads. Then there are John Deere pen lights. I have several months yet till I have to decide.

I do this every where I go, I like to make people feel special. Even poeple who are paid to wait on me. I see nothing wrong with trying to brighten the day of some one else.

I also work in a service industy and my clients sometimes not all the time are thoughtful and do something extra on occasion. So what if I want to try and brighten someones day on the ship, because sometimes they have to deal with rude, nasty and narrow minded people. And just maybe along the day they may smile, and mean it

In other words - don't confuse me with the facts - my mind is made up. If you had already decided to spread your Illinois junk all over the world, why did you bother to ask our opinion as to whether it is a good idea?

When I am getting ready to pack for my cruise, the last thing (actually never has been) on my mind is gifts for service personnel. I don't give gifts to people that work on my house and I never got gifts for work I've done for others. A cruise is not going to change that.

Yay my favorite thread is back on the first page, I have already started trinket shopping for our cruise next April. I live in metro detroit, and with our reputation it makes for such fun trinket shopping.

You're going to give them Red Wings stuff, aren't you? Shell casings? Unincorporated city land? Parts of the facade of an old Ford plant?

(I kid. I love Detroit. I just haven't forgiven the Wings for '97 yet.)

I was thinking of Free Kwame buttons, and instead of tipping giving them invoices to help get the tax base back on track.

Considering that the median home sales price in April was $65,000 for the 124 homes that were sold, maybe you should give your service people a Detroit property - that is assuming that they want to live in a 3d world country.

Yeah, but it does have a Belgium bar with feather bowling. Feather bowling!

I hope the op reconsiders her idea of giving out trinkets to the crew. It is very kind but only adds clutter to these folks small living spaces. If you want to give a gift other than money make it a wrapped, packaged sweet or food product.

Imagine the smallest inside cabin, now add four people living there for six months to a year with all of there belongings. Space is at a premium and I'm sure they don't have any room for knick knacks.

I am surprised it was that high honestly, I love Detroit, its not a 3rd world country at all. I would never live in the city because I have children, but love to visit, you should stop by some time. Great casino's, stadiums and bars, and feather bowling!

It is a really lousy idea.

Cash and a mention of the crew member's name in the cruise critique is worth way more to them than a key chain with a tractor on it.

Where do you think all of the junk that you give to crew members goes after you leave the ship - the trash bin.

I hate to be a cynic but when they say that whatever you give them is just wonderful, that is part of their professional training. What they are really think is "what kind of idiot do they think I am if they think that I really want yet another useless key chain or stuffed animal.

DON

You mean they really don't want the cool corn hats that I keep giving them???? I'm crushed:p

I remember on my first cruise over Halloween, I made up a goodie bag for our room steward - gum, spider rings, a glow in the dark bracelet, some candy, a card, things like that. He absolutely loved it and showed it off to the other steward on our hallway. I remember him telling me they love getting things like that, small things they can use (I assume and then get rid of!).

Of course, that was in addition to tipping and praising him on the critique. He also ended up with our GPS system but that's another story! (We forgot it in the room. Oops!)

I am sure he was the envy of all the other stewards in the crew bar that night with his glow in the dark dollar store jewelry

Because it's so much easier to clean while wearing spider rings!:D

I do believe I read somewhere that the 2011 Cruise Ship Employee Recruitment brochure will feature the John Deere Pen Light on the cover under the title "Living the Dream"

LMAO.

Every time I see a thread like this I'm reminded of Steve Martin in the Jerk. Remember when he was working at the carnival? LOL...funny how that kind of came full circle huh....

We always bring a small teddy bear we named Bo Bo with us on every cruise. While on-board, we pick one crew member that we feel goes beyond their duties (in our opinion) and we present him or her with the bear. There was one cruise that no one got to take him home but every time we have given one, the crew member was very happy to receive it. Have not had one refused yet and we usually stay in touch with the recipient.

Almost no one would ever refuse anything given to them, that would be rude...They simply toss it in the trash when you're not around.

For those that go above and beyond all expectations, one toy John Deere tractor will be awarded. :D
