katiefeen1 Posted May 22, 2010 #1 Share Posted May 22, 2010 We are wondering about upgrading and have one in our group who gets motion sick. We have been told mid-ship is best for cabin placement, but wondered if there is a big difference in mid-ship on Penthouse Deck compared to say Vista Deck. Any help from past cruisers with experience on the "upper decks" would be appreciated! Thanks! :)
SeaBlu Posted May 22, 2010 #2 Share Posted May 22, 2010 I have never had a problem with motion sickness, but from everything I have read and been told a higher deck and middle to aft of the ship is the best place to be. Aft is not good if you are low in the ship but aft is good if you are higher in the ship. So I would go for Penthouse Deck.
pspercy Posted May 22, 2010 #3 Share Posted May 22, 2010 For the least felt motion you need to be as close to the ship's centre of gravity as possible, so pick low deck and, typically, as close to 'midships as possible. That's if the sickness is truly caused by the ship's motion and not by some mental/emotional consideration which is very often the case. (I say this as one who has suffered motion sickness since childhood, but who in the past adjusted to the sea in a day or two but today still can't read or sleep in a moving car). I have always been okay in the cabin - the times the motion bothered me were during dinner, since the MDR is usually not midship.
ReverendOlaf Posted May 22, 2010 #6 Share Posted May 22, 2010 My wife gets motion sickness quite easily. Over the counter pills (bonine) definitely help, but they don't work all the time, and you have to take it before you get sick. There are also prescription pills for nausea and wonderful patches for nausea/motion sickness, but they make you quite loopy. The patches last for days, and while they work best as a preventative, they do help after the fact. Many people would rather not be out of it on their dream vacation, so others try ginger pills (seems to work for some people but not others). ... which brings me to SeaBands, these are wristbands that apply pressure on your wrist to magically alleviate nausea and sea sickness. They work quite well (no real issues with wild seas), and while they may compromise one's sense of fashion, there are no other side effects (save for pressure on the wrist). You can also use pills or ginger if you'd like. Anyway, there are options beyond cabin selection that can help you out. Best of luck!

However, the higher the deck, the more motion you will feel regardless. The best location for people prone to motion sickness is midship on lowest deck. WehoAtlantis Posted May 22, 2010 #8 Share Posted May 22, 2010 I agree, if you feel anything it will not be any different between the 2 decks. We felt pretty stable up there during our 10 night cruise. Have fun, Mike
Phxazzcruisers Posted May 23, 2010 #9 Share Posted May 23, 2010 I am very prone to motion sickness and ALWAYS wear a patch while cruising. Mid-ship is best, and usually lower is closer to the center of gravity. We always book in Aqua Class or CC so always are on the higher floors. With the patch I have never had a problem. In fact the stabilizers on the newer ships are excellent. For me, the wristbands have never worked at all. They do not even provide assistance on airlines, for which I always take Dramamine
maven2 Posted May 23, 2010 #10 Share Posted May 23, 2010 I will second the recommendation for the sea bands. I have also had issues with motion sickness so on my first cruise I brought Bonine, Dramamine, Ginger candies and ginger gum. The only thing I used was the sea bands. One night when seas were rough, I woke up and put on the bands and within 10 minutes I was fine-really amazing
anniversay/grad trip Posted May 23, 2010 #11 Share Posted May 23, 2010 We will be on Century in a little over a week, and we have a cabin far forward on the PH deck (C2 #1012). My DH and I are not usually prone to seasickness (and hopefully won't start now) but other than extra motion is there any other drawbacks being that far forward. I am a little worried about the amount of time that may be spent getting to the various venues ie MDR< Casino, Pool area...any thoughts pro or con??? alicam Posted May 27, 2010 #13 Share Posted May 27, 2010 You'll love being on the Penthouse deck and just remember...Century isn't a megaship, so it isn't going to take a whole lot of time to walk from bow to stern
