Class/Group Cruising??

Hey everyone,

My class of 17 people was thinking of going on a 7 or 10 day cruise to Alaska a couple days after we graduate--in 2013.

The thing is, if we are going to do this, we need to know how much money each person needs to raise. We are already going on our senior trip the March before we graduate, so that is $1200 or so we need to raise--plus however much the cruise would be.

Any help/thoughts are much appreciated!

There are several things to consider:

What are your ages? You do realize that cruise lines have learned that groups of teens are not a good idea. therefore, they have rules about who can sail. On most cruise lines, if there is anyone in a cabin who is under the age of 21, you MUST have a person in the cabin who is at least 21. Your most reasonably priced cruiseline, Carnival, ups that to 25. So, if you plan on putting four people in a cabin, the most cost effective way to go, you must have a person over 21/25 in that cabin.

You are from the Bay area, so you will have to get yourselves to Seattle or Vancouver to board the ship. Or to Anchorage, but that is much more expensive.

Passports will be required...Yes, you could sail NOW on a closed loop from Seattle with a birth certificate, but you are looking three years ahead, rules are likely to change.

Schedules are not out for 2012 yet, and schedules are in a flux because of the rediculous regulations and taxes imposed by Alaska. Cruise lines have decreased th number of ships calling to Alaska, and who knows what it wil be in 2013.

There are so many unexpected costs AFTER you board the ship, so much to consider. EM

I am giving estimates, but...

Cruise fare will vary depending on what line and cabin category you choose, but lets say you go cheap with Carnival and an inside room on a 7 night ($700 pp) then you have to add taxes and port fees, and since the price of oil will be outrageous, a fuel supplement ($280 pp).

Lets say you do 2 excursions ($200 pp), and since you will only be 18, you can't drink, so no bar bill... (If you plan on drinking, plan on $6-$10 per drink, including a 15% gratuity that is added to everything you purchase).

Lets say you get a soda package ($48 pp), and tip a few times for room services ($10)

Then there are gratuities ($10 per person, per day, so lets say $70).

Add $100 of spending money for extras.

Total: $1408 per person based on my estimates.

The above posters are correct, that you will NOT be allowed to cruise in a cabin w/o someone over 21/25 (depending on the cruise line). The lines will be strict about this!!

If you are all going to be only 18, you probably won't be doing this. Since school trips resulted in too much underage drinking, trashed cabins and a lot of problems for the cruise lines, most have a minimum age to cruise of 21. The only lines that allow 18 year olds to cruise alone are Cunard (expensive and not teen friendly), Disney (probably not a teen's idea of fun with all the young kids and Disney stuff, plus Disney is expensive) and Crystal (a luxury line that is 4 times the cost of other lines, plus not at all teen friendly).

Unless you have adults at least 21 (on some lines you have to have someone 25) to share cabins with you, I don't think you'll be taking a cruise. You will have to have one adult for every cabin you book, and they must be in the same cabin with the kids.
