On my last cruise the ship had a no smoking night in their casino and I enjoyed it. The casino was as busy as usual.

That got me thinking - why not ban all smoking on board?

I recall reading that Carnival has a no-smoking ship and they realized that they saved $ since there was less cleaning and they spent less on condiments.

Would anyone be more or less willing to cruise on a smoke free Epic?

Carnival "used to have" a non-smoking ship. They found the revenue on board wasn't as high as the other ships. It was also difficult to sell to groups because it's hard to have a whole group of people where no one smoked.

CONDIMENTS??

Oh those smokers, one puff and they're gorging themselves with mustard, ketchup and malt vinegar.

Actually as I recall the article I think they were referring to salt and pepper. My wife is a former smoker and she says that when she used to smoke she used more spices in order to "taste" her food.

In the UK there is no smoking in public places whatsoever. I always notice how smokey the casino on the ships are coming from the clean air in UK establishments.

On a recent trip to California I noticed that the smoking police were telling smokers that they had to got to a specific smoking area - outdoors!

I find it interesting that the ships don't let people smoke outside (except in designated areas) around the pool but in the casino when sitting at a BJ table and there is a chimney sitting 1 or 2 positions away that's ok?

Hey someone started a thread about smoking if you are not interested in it then don't read it. Isn't that why this site is here?

There should be no smoking allowed indoors. The airlines have no smoking, the casinos have no smoking, restaraunts have no smoking. Practically everywhere you go these days there is no smoking alllowed. Why not cruise ships why are they so lax about it? People will still come. That was the biggest worry when the smoking bans started. But guess what it didn't hurt their business. People came back and if they want to do something bad enough they will adjust to it.

They can still have a designated area outside or a well ventilated area for them. But just ban it indooors and in the cabins. Hotels have bans and so do rental car companies. And you get charged a huge fee if they catch you smoking in their rooms or cars. Why should this be any different.

When I was on the Equinox they had a no smoking casino is was so refreshing!! Some of the ships casinos you can't even breath the smoke is so heavy. And even if they have a designated area for them the smoke still gets into the non smoking areas. And they have a larger playing area for the smokers as they do for the non smokers. Talk about backwards discrimination.

Recenty while on a cruise I had a casino attendant ask me to turn down the volume on a slot machine I was playing because it was bothering this man playing blackjack behind me. While he was smoking like a chimney which happened to be bothering me. But did I ask him to put it out? No I did not. And I didn't turn down the volume down either I got up an moved and called him an @#$$%% under my breath. Can you you believe that?

And I used to be a smoker!! If I still were it would not keep me from cruising if I could still smoke somewhere on the ship. I didn't have a problem with the ban. I was still smoking when the bans started. And it did not stop me from going to these places.

And for Carnival trying to ban hair dryers and curling irons from your cabin?? Come on .......How about banning smoking in the cabins first. You don't have to start hair dryers and curling irons with a flame. It is really unbelievable how they think!

I smoke socially and love that there is no smoking indoors. It keeps me from lighting up continuously, my clothes and hair doesn't smell horrible, and gives me a reason to get 5 minute "me time" away from the husband when I go outside for a quick one! :):p

Just to add to the discussion.....why not make it a non-smoking inside ship. I don't think smokers would be bothered by going outside as long as there is a designated area. The other option would be to have 1 room inside the ship designated only for smoking. The Spirit and the Dawn both have this right by the Spinnaker. This allows smokers to smoke with no non-smokers having to be around and bothered by it. I'm quite surprised that smoking is allowed inside the cabins anyway. On our Dawn cruise in 2006 there was a fire from someone who emptied an ashtray in the garbage. It was caught very quickly but what an idiot! Then again, maybe that was just a rumour?!?

The Carnival ship that was non-smoking was the Paradise..and it was just that..

Everyone has a different opinion however I do not smoke..I have allergic reactions to it. So it was nice to be able to lay by the pool without that group of people who pull all their chairs together so that they block a big portion of the walkway around the pool and light up non-stop. Which just the fact they get in everyone's way is annoying.

Everytime someone starts to chain smoke around the pool my DH and I get up and move so that i don't get sick..maybe just maybe some people will realize that there are more than just them on the ship. It really bothers me when they "set up camp" around a family with young kids and then start the "chain smoking reunion". We have all experienced these people.

My last cruise I kept moving away from them and they kept moving closer so i had finally had enough and asked these women in particular to stay put or put out their cigs.. I mean how many times can i move away from them to have them move closer.

I don't expect anyone to agree with me at all.

Just putting it out there.

Hey if you want to puff on a cig...its your life.

I just don't want you to shorten mine.

I agree, bgem. I have nothing against smokers (or rap music, or Jehovah Witnesses, or devil worshipers, or cross dressers, or those that bathe in perfume, etc.), but please respect my right to not participate in your habit/obsession.

Honestly I'm not a smoker nor a drinker and I am the one that had cancer. Go figure huh ? I hate smoke and I keep hearing people say that if they couldn't smoke in a casino they would lose business. Personally, I hate smoke, but it doesn't stop me from going to the casino, so how can they keep saying nobody would go if they can't smoke ? What is the difference ? I simply don't believe that. They do have some very respectful people in the casino that ask if the smoke will bother you and then you have the ones that see how much they can blow it in your face, that are not respectful at all.

ANyway, if they had a non-smoking ship I would definitely go on it.

Sorry to hear about your illness - hopefully you've beaten that terrible foe.

I was on the Golden Princess in May 2010 and they had a no-smoking night in their casino. I didn't notice any drop off in their attendance, nevertheless I saw some "smokers" who weren't puffing away.

In Atlantic City they have a no smoking policy in their casinos and at first they expected a loss in revenue but it didn't happen as much as they expected.

I'm not a "smoking ****" like some of my non-smoking friends. I really don't care if people smoke as long as they don't blow it in my face. I didn't realize that Carnival didn't have a non smoking ship any longer - I don't cruise their line.

While I know this poll isn't "scientific" and is very limited in number I found it interesting that almost 80% would prefer a non-smoking ship.

Not only did Carnival lose a lot of money behind this, they reinstated smoking on their ships!

Correct, the Carnival Paradise is no longer a non-smoking ship but as in all their ships smoking is not permited in the cabins nor the restaurants. They have desginated areas indoors as well as in open air decks.

The entertainment on that ship when it was non-smoking was adequate bcs everyone was not allowed to smoke even the entertainment.

However the food tasted phenominal...It was the best food on a cruise ship i had ever experienced.

I just feel if you are going to smoke take into consideration those around you. I have experienced to many of the in your face smokers and I nor does anyone I have cruised with have nice things to say about them.

From their website just the same as NCL

Can I book a non-smoking stateroom?

Staterooms onboard are not designated as smoking or non-smoking. Guests have the choice if they would like to smoke in the cabins or not (smoking is not allowed in Spa staterooms). All cabins are fully refreshed after each cruise to guarantee incoming guests’ comfort and enjoyment. If upon boarding you are not completely satisfied with the freshness of your stateroom, simply call housekeeping and they will refresh your room again for you.

This is what I don't get

The age limit (generally) I believe in USA for drinking is 21 and the cruise lines carry this through in that they wont allow under 21's to drink on board.

I also believe most of the states in the USA now ban smoking in public places indoors so why don't the cruise lines carry this through as well ?

The majority of this world do not smoke and we all know the health issues involved. I would have thought to avoid any possible future law suits from staff in particular that have to breath in other peoples smoke every night, every cruise ship would now ban smoking in all indoor locations on board and limit smoking to just one open deck area.

Crusin'cockney

Like yourself coming from the UK I notice the difference going into places such as a smokey casino however I think your statement needs clarification as it could be read by some as a bit mis-leading although I am sure you did not mean it to be.

Whilst as you state people are not permitted to smoke in pubs, clubs, shopping malls, places of work etc people can smoke freely in the street, and so you see clusters of smokers in doorways of pubs, shops and so on, also smokers can sit outside at tables provided by pubs, cafe's etc which they designate as smoking areas.

I as do others regard the street as a public place and in our local town there is an lot of smoking in the doorways outside of pubs etc and a lot of litter as a result of discarded butts and ciggarette packs.

Just wanted to clarify a bit so people didn;t get the impression the UK was a smokeless zone

From NCL's website: "We want you to be comfortable on board, so public areas throughout all NCL ships are smoke free. If you smoke cigarettes, you can do so in your stateroom, on your balcony, in the casino or Cigar Bar (where available). If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Also, you can smoke cigarettes, pipes and cigars outside on open decks (just not around food venues, sport decks, kids' pool areas and other designated non-smoking areas)."

I wonder how difficult it is to get the smoking smell out of a room? I got back from Disney and they have a no smoking policy in their rooms. I was reading the fine print and Disney will charge a person, "...up to $250 fine to your account if it was determined that smoking has occurred in the room."

My wife has asthma and allergies so when we've gotten hotel rooms in the past that have been smokey she knows it! :( I'm just surprised they allow it in people's rooms.

I agree. That's quite a surprise. I would have thought it would be limited to the balcony.
