    • I really hadn't thought about it either way

I agree. That's quite a surprise. I would have thought it would be limited to the balcony.

I don't know how NCL cleans the residual smoke out of cabins, but my husband is also very allergic to smoke and we have never noticed anything in any cabin - and I've read the same statement in other threads from others who are sensitive.

I couldn't answer the survey because there isn't an answer for me. I don't think I have to be a smoker to think that smoking should be allowed in designated areas on a cruise ship. I think NCL's policy is excellent; my husband has never once had even the slightest issue avoiding smoke on any NCL ship we've been on (Dream, Star, Pearl, Sky).

That being said, my husband is not a gambler. Even if there's some sort of freebie, he'll just give his to me and I'll play both and that's about the limit of my presence in the casino as well. I really think that the casino is the biggest smoking issue on any cruise ship, because it's confined and it can't be avoided if you want to use the facility. Apparently (from what I've read) it has been observed historically that when a casino is smoke-free, it generates less income. I can understand this, because nobody wants to walk away from a table that they're invested in, or even miss any hands; under regular circumstances people rarely move from table to table or seat to seat, and having to leave to smoke would force that. I do appreciate that non-smokers gamble, and I think that ideally there should be a non-smoking area in casinos, though no doubt the 'good slots' and 'good tables' would always be on the 'other side'...

Smokers vs non-smokers...there's always going to be a debate on this.

I think they would loose customers (well the smoking one's) if they made the ship non-smoking. Smokers would just go to another ship that they can smoke on. I'm a smoker and would never take a cruise on a ship that completely prohibits smoking. When you are a smoker, it is a habit. Not one that you can easily just stop while you are on a cruise. If it was that easy, you would be able to just stop all together.

I will say that you shouldn't judge all smokers, just because they smoke. I am very considerate of those around me. I won't smoke around non-smokers and even when I'm with a smoker, I go out of my way to make sure that smoke isn't going in their face or whatever. I obey all the rules and only smoke where it is designated. If I'm out in public and someone is offended, I put it out as a respect to them and their surroundings. Should smoking be allowed in the casino's? No, I don't believe so. There are non-smokers in there as well trying to enjoy themselves. They should limit smoking to outside area's only. Or, either have 2 separate casino's. Be we are not all bad people. :D

I agree with sdmike.. I wish all smokers were as considerate as you.

Too many aren't like that.. Maybe you should run a smokers seminar..lol

However the fact that ncl allows smoking in the cabins now concerns me. On all of my past cruises (all carnival) they have never allowed smoking in the room and if you were found smoking you would be fined a minimum of $250. So now I am concerned I may have a room that a smoker had before me. It gets in the bed, the pillows, the carpets....etc.

I grew up with parents who smoked as long as I lived with them and they both quit cold-turkey but, Mitsugirly, you really are a rarity with such consideration. Kudos to you!

One of the big reasons we cruised DCL was because of our first cruise on the Big Red Boat. There seemed to be smoking everywhere. We swore we were done cruising and then we found Disney had no casino and no smoking in the rooms. That was a big draw for us.

This is what was nice about the TA; not that many people have been on the ship yet. I don't care how much air freshener you use, cigarette smoke is almost impossible to get rid of.

I don't smoke in my house or any building due to the smell...so I won't smoke in my room either...for the same reason, whether we are allowed to or not. :)

My wife and I were on the Carnival Paridise when it was smoke free. We both enjoyed it not to have to worry about the smoke. My wife cannot stand to be around smokers. On the Disney ship during priate night on deck it was very crowded and my wife cannot stand very long so the only chair we could find was near smokers, so we had to leave and go back to our stateroom, as the smoke was to much for her. Their has been other cruises too that we had to leave an area because of smoke. One problem we have is we like to sit buy the table and chairs on the lido deck and watch the water, Its also shady my wife cannot be in the sun as shes had skin cancer. but a lot of times the only side that has open tables is the smoking side of the deck. My wife says its the smoking side no way! John

We also traveled on the Paradise when it was Non-smoking and the ship still smelled new. The Food was fantastic!! The entire cruise was wonderfull except for the entertainment..but we were having so much fun with the people we met as well as those we knew that we didn't even know would be there we didnt care!!!!!

It was great for myself as well as the others we were cruising with, not to have to deal with inconsiderate chainsmoking smokers. What a difference it made. I just wish all smokers were like Mitsugirl!! They do need to take a lesson from her!!!!!!!

I am just keeping fingers crossed that the people in the rooms next to me don't smoke in their cabins. I know the smell does seep through, and the last thing I want to do is have to sleep smelling the smoke from next door. I really really wish NCL would ban smoking in cabins.

Well I hope your cabin isn't in the back on deck 8...;)

On the maiden voyage I'll bet everyone who smells any smoke will report it!

Hahaa.....

At least we are traveling with friends, so I know the cabin on one side of me will be smoke-free. Hoping the one on the other side of me is also occupied by non-smokers!!!

I hear you. I am stunned they would still allow smoking in the cabin. What worries me the most is all of the inconsiderate smokers that are so worried about their rights to what ever and not think about how their smoke effects others.....fingers crossed. Haven't had to deal with this at all on carnival...EVER.

Then you won't have to deal with anything different on NCL. Carnival like NCL allows smoking in the cabins.

All of my past cruises (all on Carnival) we have Never been allowed to smoke in the rooms. On our last cruise there were non-smoking signs on every door to remind you. If you were caught smoking then you could pay up to a $250 fine. This was not only stated on a printed note in the room but in the book they leave in the room as a directory as well.

Next to California, Onario Canada has some of the most restrictive smoking laws. No indoor public spaces have smoking. Only in your own home.

You cannot smoke in a vehicle with a minor, any smoking in the workplace is forbidden. As said, no indoor public spaces at all.

In fact a Transport driver was charged as he was smoking in his truck.

http://www.thestar.com/news/ontario/article/707572--man-fined-305-for-smoking-in-workplace-his-truck

We live beside Quebec and smoking is a huge thing there. However the Casino there has a no smoking policy. It still brings in the big bucks. Also the cries that all the bars in town would close have not panned out.

On our last Princess Cruise they allowed smoking in a covered section near the Pool that had the big TV screen. Unfortunately for us non smokers we had to pass by it to go to the bathroom. Too bad they just did not move it to the other side of the ship.

They also had a few nights in the casino as "Smoke Free". That was a nice touch.

The truth is that many lines depend on the European traveller to fill the ships. Smoking in Europe is still stronger than her in NA. As they catch up I think we will see less and less smoking on board. Some folks complain that lines like MSC and Costa have way too many smokers on board.

I see more destructive eating disorders on ships than smokers right now.

The overeaters just affect themselves. The smoker affect us all.

PS Yes I am a former smoker. Smokers Stink - Literally.

Maybe the fires will cause NCL to rethink the policy of allowing smoking in the cabins!

A fire onboard worries me more than the second hand smoke.
