yangying Posted May 25, 2010 #1 Share Posted May 25, 2010 Does anyone know if any large cruise lines go to (but don't land in) the Antartic in 2012? I heard that due to environmental concerns, for example, costly fuel, the cruise liners could not afford to travel to the south pole. Is summer 2011 the last season to ever travel to the Antartic? Also, how bad is the Drake Passage for sea sickness? Any help appreciated. :) -yangying.
odblnt Posted May 25, 2010 #2 Share Posted May 25, 2010 I can't answer you question, but I might suggest that you could also post your question in the Antarctica forum, located here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=
Texas Tillie Posted May 25, 2010 #3 Share Posted May 25, 2010 The last large ships to sail off the coast of Antarctica will be sailing there in Jan/Feb 2011 - don't forget that's "summer" in the southern hemisphere.
kitty9 Posted May 26, 2010 #4 Share Posted May 26, 2010 Only small ships will be allowed to sail Antarctica after Feb of 2011
Bescotti Posted May 26, 2010 #5 Share Posted May 26, 2010 I'm sailing on HAL's Veendam in January 2011 which does a drive-by of Antarctica and on their website they have just released the same cruise for 2012 - I believe HAL is going to ensure they are compliant with the new regulations regarding fuel so that they can continue to sail there.
