Using Metro from airport to Central Athens?

I was wondering if anyone has used the Metro to get into Central Athens and how difficult it is to accomplish this? Is this straight forward? Is it safe? How difficult is it to find the entrance in the airport? I would appreciate any experiences you have had.

We used the airport bus to get from the centre of Athens to the airport, and it was quite simple. It's another option to the metro, but it depends on what day and time of day you are arriving.
