Cosmo Gold Posted May 31, 2010 #1 Share Posted May 31, 2010 How easy is it to get the train from the port? How far is the train station and how did you get there? What was the cost of the train and how long did it take to get to Rome?
artnak Posted June 2, 2010 #2 Share Posted June 2, 2010 check this site .. it explains in detail how to get from Civitavecchia to Rome by train. I think the price for the BIRG pass is now 9.50 euros roninrome.com/%20transportation/cruising-come-to-rome-for-the-day-2 cut and paste the link into your browser or google it
euro cruiser Posted June 2, 2010 #3 Share Posted June 2, 2010 While most of the information in the link posted above is good, and still accurate (the BIRG ticket is still 9 Euro, as of today), I disagree with his conclusion that only Roma San Pietro and Roma Termini are relevant stations for tourists. In fact, for most people, Termini is never the best choice, as it is out of the way and takes additional time that cruise visitors simply don't have. For those going first to the Colosseum/Forum/Palatine area, the Roma Ostiense stop, followed by the metro, makes more sense than Termini followed by the metro. For those going first to the Pantheon, Roma Trastevere, followed by the #8 tram to Largo Argentina makes more sense. The advice about the BIRG ticket assumes you are going to Rome and back, in other words, a port stop vs. the end of your cruise.
hkto Posted June 2, 2010 #4 Share Posted June 2, 2010 First take free port shuttle to port gate. Civitavecchia train station is about 15 min walk from port gate. BIRG is sold inside the station in the tobacco shop. I think Roma Ostiense is a good first stop; not crowded and Piramide metro station is next to it. If starting from Colosseum it's only 2 stops on metro. Pathenon, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps are in the walking distance from Coloseum. Vatican can be reached from Ottaviano metro or walked to from Pathenon area (no more than 45 min to 1 hr). You can return to Civitavecchia from San Pietro station Civitavecchia train at Termini is very far from the main entrance; about 15 min walk. iancal Posted June 2, 2010 #5 Share Posted June 2, 2010 Absolutely agree with the previous poster about avoiding Termini. S. Pietro and Ostiense is the way to go. Even when going to Rome from FCO we never take the Leoardo express. We take the local train. The fact that we usually get much closer to our hotel by not going to Termini (and the fare is about half) and the benefit of avoiding Termini altogether more than compensates for the extra ten minutes it takes because of the additional stops. Rare GeorgiaPeach51 Posted June 2, 2010 #6 Share Posted June 2, 2010 We just did the cruise terminal to train station deal and want to warn you of one thing. We had asked people nearby how far it was to walk from the point outside the terminal area (we took the Celebrity shuttle from the ship to the port entrance). They responded that it was just a few blocks...true, about 4, I think. Piece of cake just walking , but, hauling luggage makes it seem like more. In addition, once you get to the station, (depending on the track) just know that you must drag your luggage down one flight of stairs, across, and then up another flight of stairs. Just wanted to warn you. We accomplished it, but depending on who is travelling with you (children, elder folks) it could be an issue for some people. Cosmo Gold Posted June 21, 2010 Author #7 Share Posted June 21, 2010 Would you suggest buying the tickets in advance or wait until we get to the train station?
Susan-M Posted June 22, 2010 #8 Share Posted June 22, 2010 Would you suggest buying the tickets in advance or wait until we get to the train station? It depends which type of train you are planning to use (some require advance purchase, others don't). Here's a link that should be helpful to you.
