Venice transfers

We are on a Crystal Cruise in August and the transfers from the ship in Venice to the airport seem expensive. Has anyone done their own transfer? What do you suggest?

For simplicity sake we used the transfer thru the cruise line last summer. Marco Polo airport is not that far from the cruise terminal. I can't imagine the cost of even a cab would be that much...

When we cruised out of Venice upon return there was as free shuttle to Piazzale Roma, the main bus station. From there you can take a public bus to the airpport for few euros.

If however you are short in time, or travel with lots of luggage, maybe it´s worth the money to get a transfer.

You need to find out where your ship will be docking. If it is docking at the main marina (commerical dock), then you would be able to get a land taxi from there to the airport.

But some of the smaller cruise ships dock along the canal or even south of the San Marco Plaza. If your ship is docking there, the only way to a land taxi would be a water taxi first. That may be why the ship's transfers are expensive.

It would almost impossible to walk across Venice dragging your suitcases to get to Piazzo Roma where you could get a land taxi.

Have a great next cruise.

Took at taxi when I sailed Splendour. Airport is no more than 20 min from cruise terminal. If you arrive on Sat early morning, there will be no traffic, you should be able to get to airport in 15min. The Euro is cheap right now so it shouldn't be too bad.

Some info from another site.

Venice Italy Cruise Port - Docking

Venice Italy cruise ship port is the Venezia Terminali Passeggeri.

The smaller Venice Italy cruise ship port designed for smaller cruise ships dock at the Stazione Maritime by the Dorsoduro neighborhood and fronting the Giudecca Canal.

The even smaller Venice Italy cruise ship port is geared to riverboats and they are docked near the Bienniele, adjacent to the Giardini (public gardens), and a 10-minute walk to San Marco.

and here's a great web site with cruise ship schedules including Venice.

Have a great next cruise.
