I Don't want Shrek

Recommended Posts

Nowhere in my original post did I mention a word about the characters....RCL is adding activities other than Shrek you know. I would never be inclined to pay thousands of dollars to spend a week simply to see Shrek or even Donkey for that matter.....

What other activities? Seems to me all the things they are adding have to do with characters such as Shrek plus others, except for the 3d movies.

Liberty/Freedom of the Seas

Character Meals

DreamWorks characters parade

Photo opportunities with the characters

3-D Movie Theater

First-run Dreamworks films onboard

Special DreamWorks programming in your stateroom TV

Adventure Ocean activities with your favorite characters.

Hopefully FOTS will get a few of the other activities that they are adding to the Allure. Even if they don't, my family will have a "magical" vacation!!!!

3-D Movie Theater

• First-run DreamWorks films onboard

• A one-of-a-kind AquaTheater show

• A unique ice show featuring characters from How to Train Your DragonTM

• Surprise and delight moments

HOW is Freedom going to add the AquaTheater show?

This has been a rather fascinating thread to read. I know for myself, these characters will keep me from looking at the Allure no matter how benign they turn out to be, simply because it says to me RCCL is marketing the Allure to the family experience and I do not travel with family. I am a single cruiser looking for an adult travel experience.

That said, I think it's fabulous RCCL has aligned with Dreamworks. I wish them well with this effort and think it will go a long way in keeping those cabins booked! ;)

I would think they were warmly received by everyone.

It kept kids who might otherwise be bored and raising he@@ occupied and gave parents free time to enjoy adult activities.

AO participants are kept busy in their own area of the ship and I have never been disturbed during dinner by an AO activity.

A "win..win" for all involved.

Unfortunately, it didn't completely eliminate the elevator hyjackings.

That is a good question. We don't really cruise for the shows or entertainment stuff, and we rarely even go on excursions, so that stuff doesn't matter. BF isn't big on that stuff, and if I had wanted to see an ice skating show, we would have, but it just really doesn't interest me. I wouldn't see it on land, so I don't think I'd see it on a ship. To us, cruising is our time to relax, and we know what we're going to get; we don't have to worry about planning or anything. I know we're in the minority, but it works for us. :)

Completely understandable. It is amazing how relaxing cruising became for us when we stopped using the MDR and no longer had to worry about that schedule. I would bet that your time on the ship is very relaxing the way that you do it.

But didn't it indicate that RCI was targeting families and generally going to he@@ in a hand-basket?

I can just imagine the reaction from all those kid hating old fogies. "Well....Royal Carribean is going to hell....last time we ever cruise RCL...it use to be...blah blah blah....Oh! That is what I just read about Shrek introduction. Sometimes it all blends together. Nevermind...:o

Why do you have to get offensive and then make this an "old" vs "young" discussion. It may be in your mind, however having read through this thread from the start, it appears to me that their are young and old on BOTH side of the discussion.

old is a state of mind, not your number of birthdays,;)

WOW!!!

I never knew that too much sun can make people go off the deep end.

Is it a bad sign that when I put one of those green clay masks on my face last night, I immediately thought of Shrek and this thread???

Hey...that's OK by me. I have NO desire to see cartoon characters on board, but maybe the families with kids will now be more likely to book on those 4 ships and leave the others for us "old folks".

I agree 100% ;)

We had Shrek Movie on a Princess cruise

on the outdoor screen continually

most of the cruise days and time.

I never want to hear the sound of that movie ever again.

Once or twice okay but almost full time.

Would you care to explain that definition to Social Security and Medicare

I'll never collect because when I come of age it will be BROKE! Another thing that will be refered to in the past tense like "I remember when Royal Carribean did not cater to families and those young whipper snappers and I could pay for my room with my Social Security check and got change to boot."

Well, it really won’t affect us much as:

1. We don’t sail on Disney – they don’t have casinos on their ships, to they’re out.

2. We probably won’t encounter Shrek – after a cruise on Liberty, we pledged, “This is the biggest ship we will ever sail on.” So, that leaves us out from the Oasis and Freedom class ships. Just too big, too many people.

Now, that being said, one of our best cruises ever was on the old Premier Line (Big Red Boat) when they had the Looney Tune characters. (They had the Disney characters for a while and then when Disney decided to start their own line, Premier went with Universal characters.) Our little kids never did care about any of the Disney characters. Wouldn’t give ‘em a second look.

But our daughter just loooooved Tweety Bird when she was about four. (She’s 20, now and we still call her “Tweety.”) We took a Premier cruise with the Looney Tune characters and we signed up for the “character breakfast” (held in the disco – not the MDR) and for “tuck-in service.” The costume character would come to your cabin with a photographer and tuck your youngster into bed. The kids would get a signed photo of the character and Mom & Dad would get a photo of the kids with the character. (“Souvenir photo included with tuck-in service…”) I’m in my office, just now, and looking at that picture that was taken with the little kids in their pajamas and the Tweety character dressed in a nightshirt & cap. It’s never coming off the wall. That was probably one of the fondest shipboard memories for every member of the family to this day.

Now, I it’s hard for me to imagine any kid today getting all that affectionate towards the current bunch of smart-mouthed, flatulent, pop-culture quoting, hipper-than-thou characters populating the “Shrek” franchise (O course, I’m usually wrong about this sort of thing), but I’m here as a witness to say that it just could be a cruise of a lifetime for some family.

I know our kids haven’t been as happy on any of the subsequent cruises we’ve taken in the past 16 years.

Liberty is a Freedom class ship. Maybe you realize that, and you're saying that Liberty was too big, but it appeared as if you were saying Liberty was your limit, and you wouldn't sail on anything larger than Liberty.

Didn't read the whole thread, but thought I would add my personal opinion to what they are doing.

My background is that I am huge Disney fan, all aspects, parks, movies, characters, merchandise, etc. Have been going to WDW for 20+ years, yes we live in FL, just makes it easier. LOL We are new parents, DD is 1 year old, so I am now really looking forward to seeing how she reacts, enjoys or not, what we love and enjoy about Disney. Yes, we also like the Dreamworks films.

That said, I am not pleased about the idea of having characters on the ship. Movies yes, merchandise, fine. But characters not for me. Mostly because I do think of my cruises on RCCL as different vacation experience away from our Disney parks time, so if there are characters then I am getting too much of the same experience I get going to Disney. I wouldn't leave RCCL, but would likely not want to sail on ships that have them, or if we did happen to be on one, I would likely avoid that part, if possible. I am glad that we will get to enjoy Oasis before it comes, and hope that we don't enjoy it too much as the characters would be a bummer. However, we don't know what all they are going to do and how much character in your face experience it's going to be.

We have done Disney cruise, before we had our DD, and did find it to be a bit too much. We'll see how we feel later this year when we all get to go on the Disney cruise together. Disney does this for a living, so RCCL will have to see how much they want to match that type of experience or not.

Thanks for reading and will certainly watch to see how it all plays out.

Scott

i too-will not read all 17 pages but if they want characters and dreamworks movies run on an outdoor screen-go for it.

I'd really just love the screening room to run more updated movies and I'd be thrilled. We never have time to go to the movies and my husband and I would love a good flic. That has not been the case the few times we have cruised.:( We always check the compass for the movies being played and they have not been all that great.

  • 2 months later...

I have not read all 9 pages of this thread (per my CC settings).

These are big ships and the characters will only be in a limited area for a limited time.

I am more upset that RC is starting to ape CCL/Princess and pollute the main pool areas with big screens. Who needs MUTS blaring all day long.

But once again these are big ships so we can avoid the noise if needed.

And if I choose to line up with the kiddies and get my pic taken with Shrek, so what.

We went on the Disney Magic with another 60+ couple in 2005 and we all had fun having our pictures taken in the atrium with some of the characters. Me in a bathing suit with Daisy..........priceless!!!!
