Sharing My Impressions / May 29 to June 5

Recommended Posts

I just got off the Oasis of the Seas this morning and wanted to share my impression of the ship... in a word WOW! This is truly an incredible ship.

We were in a D3 connecting cabin and yes... they are even smaller than on Freedom class ships. The storage space is minimal at best, while okay for the two of us, I think it would be an issue with more than 2 people in the cabin. The addition of a real table for the balcony was very welcome. The shower was a bit larger than the Freedom class showers...don't get excited only a bit! The bed was however the big plus in this cabin. On other ships when they say a Queen size bed when the beds are together they mean Queen size... the size is really close to a King for Oasis! This turned out to be a big plus for us on the last night since a drip from the ceiling made one side of the bed unusable for the last night on the ship.

The shows on this ship were all wonderful. Hairspray was very well done and the cast was amazing, a very enjoyable 90 minutes! The big surprise for us was the commedy club. This venue seats only 120 guests per show so the performance was very intimate and both commedians interacted with several members of the audience. The Ice show was as always top notch and the Aqua show was a surprisingly entertaining show featuring diving, gymnastics, synchronized swimming all intertwined to perform a story.

The infamous roast beef sandwiches at the Park Cafe did not disappoint! Thanks to all who have written about them on these boards or I surely would have missed out on this treat! Giovanni's Table was enjoyable but to tell the truth I still prefer Portofino for Italian dining on the ship! The dining room meals were typical Royal Caribbean basically a hit or miss situation...no big surprises here. My husband enjoyed the corndog from boardwalk... but we were both disappointed in the Seafood Shack and would not want to waste the calories or cash on this venue again. One great surprise was the breakfast/lunch that is available in the concierge lounge. This is basically a special room service menu served only in the lounge that was very enjoyable with all the available tables to watch out the breathtaking views of the boardwalk and aqua theatre.

Central Park is just beautiful... especially at night! Boardwalk is well done and a magnet for all the children on board. The solarium was absolutely beautiful and inviting. The beach pool was very unique with the chairs sitting in the water as long as you can keep your belongings on the chair...

The casino on Oasis is absolutely huge and conveniently divided into smoking and non-smoking areas to accommodate everyone who enjoys spending time in this area. The Royal Promenade on Oasis is so wide it really does not feel like a ship at all. It seems like there was always something going on in the Promenade that was drawing large crowds... the 70s party, a parade or a welcome aboard party... this area is well done and well utilized. The diamond club is a beautiful room with a very nice view of the Promenade but is never really utilized... the morning breakfast is done in the Opal dining room and the evening cocktail party is held in Blaze due to the numbers of diamond and diamond plus members on the ship.

One week on this ship is not enough to see and experience everything she has to offer... I'd like to thank the other Cruise Critic members who posted about the public balconies on deck 11 aft... was a great space and so underutilized. We saw the Aqua Theatre show from this deck. There are plenty of loungers and chairs that are never used. I also enjoyed the public deck on top of the bridge for great views... I would never have known these areas existed without reading your reviews.

Can I say that Oasis is now my favorite ship? No... not really. It is beautiful, we had a wonderful time and I am looking forward to our next trip in September aboard Oasis... maybe after the next trip... but not yet.

If you have any questions I'll do my best to answer!

I wonder what's up with the dripping from the ceilings. A room down the hall from us got entirely flooded and they were there cleaning the entire time with dryers and whatnot. Hm.

Hmmm indeed, Wonder if that is why they basically ignored our issue?

I have to agree with most of MaryEBS' review... but will like to add my five cents.

Pros:

Embarkation & Disembarkation. A breeze... we were really impressed with the promptness & the organization.

150 Central Park & The Chef's Table. A truly memorable dining experience. Worth every &&& spent.

The ship itself is the destination as the ports of call were not the most appealing.

A very lively cruise... with so many people having fun. You could find people awake until the Woo hours. We enjoyed that very much as we are party-people.

Cons:

The bathroom was extremely small & the shower stall was in a weird position.

There was a sewerage smell particularly coming out of my bathroom sink & in some public bathrooms.

The MDR's service was very slow & the assistant waiter took forever to remove the dirty dishes.

To us the ship seemed a bit cold & somewhat impersonal. I guess it's because of its size but that's expected with 6,000+ pax.

Was this our favorite cruise? After 30+ cruises I"ll have to say No, but we were very curious about all the novelty of this mega ship & indeed it safisfied our curiosity completely.

Will we take the Oasis again? Most probably Not. Seen it... Done it.

Will I recommend it? ABSOLUTELY... a beautiful ship indeed with so many innnovations that is worth going on it.

Happy Cruising...

I was on the same sailing and agree completely with both reviews, including the been there, done that statement. Was a GREAT experience once, but will likely fall back the the Freedom Class for future sailings.

Personally it was a great ship but I liked the Freedom ....besides its closer to home for me...I found it prettier inside too!

I was wondering if you could give me your thoughts about the Explorer of the Seas. We're thinking of taking the family in June from New Jersey.

I'm not Mary, but I've done the 5-night with the family and the 9-night with my wife. Both are wonderful cruises.

The port in Bayonne could be MUCH nicer and easier to get to, but if that's the biggest problem on a cruise, that's good news to me.

Enjoy!

Hello Shadowlover -

I love the Explorer of the Seas! Explorer is a beautiful ship. When I was on Explorer it sailed from Miami so I cannot help with the Port in NJ... but can suggest you open a new thread asking for a friend "ChristieNJ" to respond to you... she has been on Explorer out of NJ on several cruises and could certainly respond to any question you may have about Explorer and or the port.

I am very sensitive to smoke and still found it hard to breathe even though I was in the non-smoking designated area.

My husband and I were on Explorer last Sept. for a 5 day to Bermuda.. I was our very first cruise ever and we had a great time.. Great ship, we had a promenade room. We were in the middle of the ship and felt just a little movement. We had such a great time we are booked for our 20th Anniv. on Oasis next May. There is a sports bar on the Promenade where we watched the parades and had the best waitress...she was from Jamaica (sorry but drawing a blank on her name right now).. She was awesome!
