Easy solution - skip the cruise and do your own land tour. The Alaska ferry is great, as are flights within SE Alaska :)

Yes, I am sure we are getting out of the boat as they have two touring options in Anan. One that is guided where a guide takes you on the trail to the observatory both ways and one where you go on your own and meet back at the appointed time.

We are on the Radiance of the Seas from 9-6 in Ketchikan.

We are looking at a cruise for 2011 that will put us in Ketchikan on August 9th. Is this too late to go to Anan Creek. I have read that Traitors Cove is not as great and the sightings are not as good.

 

Please post if you have gone to Anan in this time frame and what your experience was. BQ if you have any opinions please feel free to chime in .

We are also planning an independent land trip to Denali after our cruise and will probably be spending 3 days there. We would just really like to see the bears up close.

Yes, Anan is usually still viewable in this timeframe. BUT, inquire of the vendors their recommendation. IF you are going interior Alaska, you may also want to consider one of the fly ins to Katmai, since those are the browns, where as Anan is likely going to be blacks.

Bummer, I was so excited when I saw a way to take a boat to Anan instead of a floatplane :( Unfortunately, we are going to Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan not Wrangell. I hate to fly and have booked a floatplane excursion to Anan, but scared to death to go on it, my family desperately wants me to go, though:o
