Is Mexico Scrapped?

I think you might be confusing cause and effect.

My two cents.

There have been no stories of any cruise ship passengers attacked in Mexico. The problem is that this is an over saturated market. At times there were four ships going to the same three ports. It doesn't matter which cruise line you are on, PV, Mazatlan & Cabo are the same three ports. After you take 500,000 people a year to the same ports for two or three years, you have pretty much covered everyone who wanted to go. I've been to PV and Cabo four times each, and will visit each two more times within the next twelve months.

Carnival is still doing this year round, Disney, HAL, Princess & NCL are doing this seasonally. Because Carnival charges less, the other cruise lines were having trouble meeting their expectations. Disney can, and will, be able to charge more.

Also, you seem to limiting your argument to just the Mexican Riviera. There is also the Caribbean side of Mexico, and I am unaware of any cruise line cutting back on its port calls to the Caribbean side of Mexico. This includes the cruise lines that are cutting back on the Mexican Riviera itineraries. So the argument that the cruise lines are leaving Mexico does not hold water.

and it seems Princess doesn't make enough money on this itinerary so they are dumping the western Mexican ports. I wouldn't take a cruise to lose several ports so their bottom line was better thru being stuck on the ship so I could lose in the casino, buy more in the shops and drink more in the bars. I like the ports except for Acapulco and really enjoyed my cruise in and out of San Diego. I would happily do that again w/ or w/o the canal.

It is simple arithmatic folks. It is not profitable for the cruise lines since the west coasterners do not cruise as often as the easterners. Thus the move to the east and pull out of the southwest market.

Well, according to the governor of Arizona, most of the Mexican population has already relocated to her state, so I guess disbanding the country would be the next logical step . . .

that would be Az and Calif.

It's not that we West Coaster's don't like to cruise. It's just that going to the SAME 3 ports over and over again gets pretty boring! If more cruise ships were willing to visit other MX ports, we would be more tempted to get on the ships again and again.

I am happy to see that Princess will be doing the 3 CA Coastal cruises (including my favorite stop, San Francisco) and I am glad that Hawaii is becoming more popular for cruise ships as RT from LA. I think places like Monterey and Catalina could be added too, along with the gorgeous city of Santa Barbara. Then we would all cruise more often!

I am sorry if I offended anyone I was simply stating the obvious. I used to live in Santa Rosa CA, ask a west coast person to take a vacation when dressing more formally than flip flops,t shirts, and shorts are expected their reply will be "heck no". I have been to weddings where dockers were the dress slacks for men LOL........ West coast folks enjoy a more rugged and laid back experience with little or no effort. I am an east coast girl and I love the fru fru that is cruising. It is simple arithmatic as I said earlier, that is why there are so many more ships in Florida, the weather and interest make it the more profitable spot thus the move of the Star from west to east enough said.

No offense taken... I'm born and raised in Los Angeles. :) I, for one, quite enjoy "dressing up" when I'm on a cruise. I don't have that many opportunities to do so in my normal, day to day, life.

Also, another reason that cruise lines are seemingly abandoning the West Coast market is that there are many more destinations available to ships sailing from South Florida than there are for ones sailing from Southern California especially on short duration cruises of 7 days or less. A bit of cruise monotony sets in when the only choice you have is which ship you'll take for all the same ports... :p

We love the Mexican Riviera cruise. It's so relaxing and such lovely seas to cruise on. We were on the Splendor in January and will be on the Sapphire in November.

Then, we're booked on the Sapphire for September of 2011 to Santa Barbara, SF, San Diego and Ensenada out of L.A. Can't wait to cruise under the Golden Gate Bridge.

We live in L.A. and have done every venue out of L.A., Long Beach and San Diego. We even drove to Seattle to do Alaska.

If we can drive to the dock and we're on a big, floating hotel, with good food, good drink, entertainment and a promenade deck to walk on.......we're good to go.

I'm so glad that NCL pulled the Star out of L.A. They need to see if they can fool someone else 3000 miles away. They got as much as they could on this side of the rockies. We saw through their facade!

Cruising out of Galveston holds no glory for us. I don't much care for watching the sea and wild life being destroyed by BP in that part of the world.

I'll stick to L.A. and Long Beach for now.

Means they would have to halt all shipping into the port of LA. Not.

The article is a year old.

This makes no sense. Why would ships stop going to Mexico because of an emission regulation in California?
High cost fuel! Not the only reason but probaly the straw that broke the camels back.

If someone wants to cruise out of California, there are only two ways to go (unless one is going one way or making a very long round trip) - Mexico or Canada. Even the cruises that circle around Hawaii stop in Ensenada.

If they are sailing for 4-5 days w/o ports what savings do they make on fuel. I know the passengers will not be paying port charges but how does that help the ship?

Whether or not the ship stops in a port or two, the ship has to move a fixed distance. Say the ship has to go 1000 miles in four days. I could do it in 87 hours at 10 knots. Or the ship could stop twice and go 1000 miles in 70 hours at 12.5 knots (and spend 16 hours in two port stops). The ship will use less fuel going 1000 miles in 87 hours at 10 knots then it will going 1000 miles in 70 hours at 12.5 knots.

It is no different for your car. You can travel 300 miles in five hours at 60 MPH, or 300 miles in six hours at 50 MPH. The slower speed will take longer, but use less fuel.

  • 8 months later...
So are the Princess ships still going to Mazatlan or PV, or Cabo in 2011-2012 season?

I was just seeing if currently they are stopping in Mazatlan?

For the remaining Mex Riv cruises this season (end of April) PV is still on but an overnight in Cabo has been substituted for Mazatlan.
