Day 1 – Embarkation Day - Sunday June 27th

My husband and I have sailed once before. We had the privilege to sail on the Ecstasy in 2007.

This was the kid’s first cruise.

We live in Houston, so we were able to drive out to Galveston the same morning.

I had already pre-paid our parking at Galveston Park N Cruise. We paid $60 to have an indoor spot. I believe it’s $45 if you pre-pay for outdoor parking spot and $50 if you pay the day of.

It’s right across the street from the terminal. My husband dropped us off at the terminal and a porter helped us with our luggage and he went to park the car. He joined us within 5 minutes.

Upon going thru Security, we were stopped because the size of my cooler on wheels was too large. So we removed all of our drinks and stuck the cooler inside another carry on that we had. I understand that we can only bring a 12x12x12 cooler, but what’s the difference of brining a slightly larger cooler as opposed to putting them in a wheeled carry-on luggage?

We arrived to the terminal at 10:30 and went thru the process and were sitting in the “holding area” by 11:00. They allowed us to start getting on the ship by 11:30.

We went straight to the Lido deck to grab some lunch and hoping to catch the World Cup game.

We finished our lunch and went inside to find a spot to watch the game.

We went into one of the Sports bars and even though it started to get crowded with people that had the same intention, we were informed that the bar doesn’t open until 4:30 that the ship departs. So, there was no one around to come in and change the channel on the TV!

Eventually the crowd headed over to the bar in the casino area to watch the game.

While my DH stayed to watch the game, the kids and I went to explore the ship.

After some exploring was done, we went up to our room. Thankfully our luggage had already been delivered with the exception of my sons. No problem, I thought, it will show up soon.

After the major disappointment that Mexico lost 3-1, my husband joins us and we begin to explore the ship once more and really begin to enjoy the ice cream machines located all over the lido deck!

By then it’s time for the munster drill. I tried to hold off as long as I could as I had read previous suggestions, but I still got packed in like a sardine! It got hot and tiring. But it was nice to people watch. I wish I would have waited longer to have been able to stand at least in the front row and get some breeze!

We go back to the room and still no signs of my son’s luggage! As we are walking down the hall, I noticed a luggage tag on the floor! Sure enough it was mine!!! I started to panic bc I wondered how else would they know the luggage was mine?!? I then regretted not doing what I saw many do – they laminated their luggage tags that were provided by Carnival and then punched a hole on them and tied them using tie wraps to secure them. Thankfully I had packed the kids swim suits in my carry-on.

The kids got into the swim suits and went to sit down by the pool.

The pool is an even 3 ft 8 in and there are no slopes – so having a short 8 yr old, he really couldn’t enjoy the pool. I thought it was pretty cool how they have this addt’l area in which the water flows out of the pool onto it. It allowed my son to sit there and still cool off.

tony-pool.jpg.0efd847701825c92a72a8fe9f76e9de6.jpg

While my DH and DS enjoyed the pool, my DD and I went to the Camp Carnival “Meet & Greet”. We arrived a little late, but were able to enroll her in the “All Night Party” which was to be held on Friday. This party was to begin at 8:00 pm and last until 3:00 am!!! The fee was $26 per child, but they did say that you would not be charged until the child arrived to the party.

After the “Meet & Greet” we rushed to change and off to dinner.

We were a little late for dinner as we were trying to ask about our lost luggage. I was told I couldn’t go to “Lost & Found” until 7:00 pm.

Our table was in the Monet dining room. I originally had requested “Early” dining and later changed my mind to “Anytime” dining, but was waitlisted. Upon getting on the ship, I didn’t want to go thru the hassle of asking to be moved, so we kept our reservation as it was.

I was very surprised by the initial contact I had with the main waiter!!

He introduced himself and then proceeded to ask “So, you have a nice tip for me?”

I was in such shock that I was speechless!!! I just joked with him and asked him what kind of “advice” was he looking for! Other than that, we had a wonderful experience every time we had dinner. We had dinner the MDR every single night and I truly enjoyed that they took the time to see how you liked things or had things waiting for you upon your arrival; things such as lemon for your iced tea, etc.

After dinner, we went to “Lost & Found” and once again, panic set in when my luggage was not there!

We went back to the room and lo and behold!! Our luggage was there! Since I had my personal luggage tag, they were able to cross-reference it and delivered it into my stateroom.

Even though we were tired and wore out, we still went to the “Welcome Aboard” show. Even though we got there at exactly 8:45, we found awesome seats right in front!

After the show, we called it a night!!

Day 2 - First Day at Sea – Monday, Formal Night

Due to TS Alex, we got high wind and rain on this day.

We tried going up on the deck and the wind was pulling us in different directions!

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of wearing a sun dress that day!

It was pretty hard holding to the bottom of my dress and trying to take pictures!

wind2.jpg

dress.jpg

It was so windy that the top floors of the decks were closed off and the water slide never opened.

We were pretty bummed as we were really looking forward to enjoying the slide.

Out of the 7 days that we were on the Conquest, we were only able to enjoy the slide on the last day.

We spent the remainder of the day inside the ship, so I have no idea if the weather got worse or better.

My DS then decided to go to Camp Carnival as they were coloring their t-shirts.

The line was outrageous to drop off your child the first day and then it got worse when they couldn’t find the child’s name that was in front of us. I felt like grabbing my son’s name tag off the wall and asking if he could go in bc he was missing out on the fun, but we waited.

shirt.jpg

We had lunch in the MDR. We sat with 2 additional couples that were 1st time cruisers and had a wonderful lunch. My DS and I ordered sushi as the appetizer and that was really good!

sushi.jpg

My DH ordered the “Vegetable Fajitas” plate. It sounded really great! You get fajitas and all the works on flour tortillas. I did hear the 2nd couple ask the waiter if they offered anything for vegetarians, but I was so engaged in my conversation with the other couple, that I didn’t pay any attention as we love meat!

So he was really surprised when he got a tortilla full of vegetables!!! LOL!! Needless to say, we went up to the Lido deck to grab something for him.

The tables by the pool were always taken by people just sitting and watching. So we always had to go inside and eat. We didn’t want to have to be wondering around carrying our trays looking for an available table, so we would find a table first and then go get our food. I was very impressed on how quickly the cleaning staff would come and clean off a table. 9 times out 10, I felt like we had to be like vultures to get a table though. As soon as you spot an open one, we would have to run and get it.

DH enjoyed the Mongolian Grill. This was his favorite out of all!! You choose your vegetables, then the meat, and then the sauce and they will cook it while you wait. The line was a little long, but nothing too bad or not worth standing in line for.

We then headed up to Deck 5 and did some shopping. I thought it was really cute when DS asked “Mom! Can you buy me this watch?!? It’s only $14!” As I couldn’t believe it, I took a closer look. Yeah right! $14?! Try $1,400! He confused $1,400 for $14. Big mistake sweetie!

watch.jpg

After enjoying the pool in the afternoon, we head back to our room to get dressed for dinner. Tonight is formal night and my DS was really looking forward to it as he had his mind set on getting the lobster entrée.

lobster.jpg

I was pleased to see that they remembered that I liked lemon with my iced tea and already had it set on the table by the time we arrived. I also noticed that the tables were pretty full this night as compared to the previous night. I was surprised though, to see that the table (actually, we were in booths) behind me had to share the table with another couple they didn’t know! I am aware that you share tables, but I was under the assumption that it was at the larger tables.

My DH ordered 2 entrées. At first, we felt embarrassed by doing so, but since our waiter actually recommended it, we felt comfortable doing it afterwards. Since my DS saw that you could do it, he quickly got the hang of it and ordered the “Chocolate Melting Cake” double every single night!

Two years ago I had to change once I got on the boat because the white tank top that I wore to get on the boat got dirty. I decided that at sail away I was going to be comfortable so I changed into a cute strapless sundress that hit mid thigh.

Well while we were standing on the top deck a gust of wind came and blew my dress up I grabbed it and started laughing out of embarassement. That was the first and last time I wore a dress on deck. :o

Day 2 - First Day at Sea – Monday, Formal Night

On our way to our cabin, we stopped by the interactive map to see where we were at. It was pretty cool to be able to show the kids were we were headed to.

map.jpg

We then head to the theater room. This night they presented “Voila Paris!”. It was ok, but DH fell asleep!

After the show, we hung out at “Alfred’s Lounge” to kill time until it was time for the 10:30 laser tag. They had the Latin group playing in there. I think they were called “Fandango”. They were pretty good, but after hearing them every night and they played the same songs over and over, it got a little boring. My DS did come home singing the songs though! I thought it was so awesome to have seen an elderly couple dancing all night! They were visiting from Monterrey, Mexico and they were in their early 80s. They didn’t let age slow them down. One night Fandango was playing by the casino area and they elderly couple were dancing. She wife kept asking the group to stop so that she could go sit down and rest. She finally got her wish and the couple left the dance floor. Not 5 min passed, when the husband escaped and came back on the dance floor!! Since the people were going thru the casino to get to the MDR, they would stop and dance as well and cheer him on! He already had a few tequila shots on him and he started dancing on the pole as well!! Wow! Wish I had the same energy as they do when I reach that age!

elderly.jpg

The music was getting really good and were barely getting the nerve to get up and dance when we realized it was 10:45!!! So we got the tab and rushed down to go play laser tag. It was held in the same theater room where all the shows are held, I just can’t recall the name.

Laser tag is $5/pp for 5 min. The line was a little long to pay, but once you pay, you sit in the rows and wait for your turn. It was very well organized. We waited about 20 min and noticed that around that time, they began to turn people down and told them to come back tomorrow. The laser tag is held inside a blow up moonwalk sort of thing. You have to remove your shoes, so it’s best if your bring socks with you. We really enjoyed it and it was not overpriced at $5 for 5 min. I honestly was expecting to pay $20/pp or so.

lasertag2.jpg

lasertag1.jpg

We called it a night after laser tag.

Tonight we were greeted by a dinosaur!

Day 3 - Second Day at Sea – Tuesday

We slept in this day as we knew that we were going to have a hectic schedule the next few days.

But it was still early enough to have breakfast in the MDR. We woke up too late the previous day and were turned away from MDR, so we ate on the Lido deck.

DS was delighted to be able to get waffles as they were not served in the Lido deck the day before.

We didn’t do too much this day, we just hung out at the pool and the hot tub.

Once again, the water slide was closed due to high winds. Bummer!

The kids were mesmerized by the color of the water. Living close to Galveston, they had never seen water this blue. Not even when we went to Puerto Vallarta was the water this blue.

deck.jpg

deck2.jpg

I must confess and ask “Why are kids allowed in the hot tubs if they can’t behave?! And where are the parents???” I ask previously asked this question on a forum on Cruise Critic and I didn’t see why children were looked down upon getting in a hot tub. I can certainly understand the adult’s frustration now!! The day was windy once more, but we all got into the hot tub since the pool was too deep for my son. But he didn’t enjoy it like a pool! He sat next to us as we people watched and I enjoyed a Piña Colada. The Jamaican band was playing and they had a cool atmosphere going. Everything was nice and dandy, until 2 little girls started horse playing with each other and splashing everyone!! It got really irritating until one of the gentlemen in the tub asked them to stop. I really wondered where the parents were at and couldn’t they see that their child was being annoying??

DD and I snuck off and went to try out the sauna. It was very quiet and relaxing. Surprisingly there was no one there. I was thinking it was going to be crowded.

sauna.jpg

We didn’t last too long and went back to meet with up DH and DS on the Lido deck.

Then they had a deck contest. Odd cabins vs. Even cabins and they had to go around the deck looking for several requested items. One of them was a bikini tops off of women!!! Thankfully it was still kept PG for the kids! We stayed in the hot tub and just watched the show, but the deck got very crowded as you can see in the photo.

congaline.jpg

Once again, we enjoyed lunch on the Lido deck and DH got lunch from Mongolian Grill once more.

Then they had the ice sculptor on the Lido Deck. That was pretty cool to watch as well.

icesculptor.jpg

After the ice sculptor, Fun Ship Freddy made his appearance!

We then hurried off to the room to get ready for the “Past Guest Party”. Since we had time to spare, we went back to the lido deck to allow DS to get the tattoo he had requested earlier that day, but the line was too long. A 5 min wait turned into 30 min!!! It got really aggravating that a young lady standing in line was holding the spot for her entire family!!! If we would have known that there were 8 - 10 in front of us, we would have left! My DS’s tattoo was about $16. I could have sworn that it said that it would last up to 4-days, but it started to wear off by the next day that we went to Jamaica.

tony-tattoo-1.jpg

tony-tattoo.jpg

Running a little late because of the tattoo wait, we hurried to the party. This was held in the theater room. This was my first time attending one and was pretty excited to see all the drinks that were available. DH and I were like little kids in the candy store. I don’t know if you can say that we “snuck” the kids in with us (since they were not Past Guest), but they didn’t want to go to Camp Carnival either. They enjoyed it as well. The waiters were always available and you got another drink even before you finished the first one. There was a couple that came in late that sat next to us. The gentlemen kept on ordering a drink that was not being served. The waiters would just say “ok”, but never returned with his drink. I had plenty of margaritas and Blue Hawaiians. I would prefer to think that it was the ship that kept rocking as opposed to it being me! At least you can say they were not stingy with their alcohol! ;-)

pastguestparty.jpg

tony-drink.jpg

After the party, we went off for dinner. I was pretty well surprised to see that the tables were pretty vacant around us. Those that had attended the previous night (formal night) were not there. One couple that attended formal night were on their honeymoon and ordered a bottle of wine. They never once returned all week. What a waste of wine! When the waiters sung or danced their routine, I felt that all the action was happening on the lower floor. Even though our waiters on the upper floor danced, all the excitement seemed to be going on downstairs.

Once again DH ordered 2 entrees and DS ordered 2 melting cakes!!

After dinner, we walked thru the Casino. Once again, our favorite elderly couple were out there dancing!

We sat down in the lounge chairs to people watch. I tried my luck in the casino, but lost $20. I know it’s not much, but I didn’t think it was fun to lose them, so I called it quits.

We then headed off to the theater room. This night it was “Motown Showtime (w/ Ron Joseph)”.

By now we started getting the hang of it. Arrive around 8:15 that people are trying to still settle in for Bingo and you will get a good seat for the show afterwards.

He was pretty hilarious and had us cracking up the entire show. We really wanted to see the Adult Comedy show, but we couldn’t since we had the kids. We did go by the room where it was being held at and it was jam packed! There were people standing in the hallway trying to catch the show. There was a magic show going on in the adjacent room, but that one too was packed.

We decided to call it a night since we knew that we were going to have to get up early the next day.

This time, we were greeted by an Elephant!

Day 4 - Wednesday – First POC- Montego Bay, Jamaica

We were up and at ‘em by 9:00 am. We decided to sleep in late as we did not have any excursions planned and knew that we could take our sweet little time off the ship.

We still had plenty of time to get breakfast and relax to get off the ship.

Watching Jamaica from the ship was amazing!

Jamaica-arriving.jpg

You could also see where the vendors set up like a Flea Market at the terminal

fleamarket.jpg

We arrived 30 min late due to the ship slowing down trying to avoid TS Alex. We were cleared to leave the ship around 10:00. We were instructed to get off on Deck 0, but when you pressed 0, the elevator would not respond. So, we pressed 1 and later figured out why we couldn’t go straight to 0. After coming down the stairs, we were surprised by the size of the crowed!! I later had to leave my family to use the restroom. I asked one of the directors where was the nearest bathroom. I was going to have to go all the way up to 3!!! At the same time, he yelled that they had opened up a new exit. So I called my husband over and we all went to the new exit.

Like I mentioned earlier, I was relaxed because I was on my own time. When we finally got off the ship, the Jamaican’s at the Flea Market were very nice. I had taken off all my jewelry the night before because I was expecting to have them tug and pull us to buy their merchandise. They would greet us and ask if we wanted to buy anything. A simple “No, thank you” worked well and they left us alone.

I had done plenty of research on CC and had decided to catch a taxi for $5 and go to Doctor’s Cave Beach. The prices are posted inside the terminal, so I assume there is no negotiating the prices. I must have misunderstood the price of $5 to Doctor’s Cave Beach from a previous CC poster, because it was $5/pp, not per car ride. So, I figured for $40 for the 4 of us and round trip, I guess we can spend an extra $20 and use the “Hot Spot” shuttle service offered. It’s an “all you can use” a/c shuttle service. We stood in a long line, but it went quick. We paid our $15/pp and got our wristbands.

Our first stop was the “Old Fort Craft”. It was similar to a Flea Market. We had a lady greet us and ask if anyone wanted to get off. She seemed a little annoyed that no one got off, but signed the paperwork for the bus driver to continue. 2nd stop was Margaritaville!! Whoo Hoo!! The majority of the people got off here. I ordered myself a Strawberry Margarita and it was delicious!!! My total was $8 and some change and paid with a $10. I was pretty anxious to get my change in Jamaican money. I was planning on tipping the Gentleman in US $1’s since I had plenty, but it really annoyed me that he never returned with my change!!! O’well… it was just a dollar, but he would have gotten more if I had actually tipped him in US currency.

Here are the water toys at Margaritaville:

margaritaville.jpg

I was surprised to see that we were not too far from the ship!

margaritaville2.jpg

We then walked over to the Harley Davidson Shop. Nothing caught our eye, so we continued to walk the strip. We then entered a local store. DH found a tank top of his favorite team, the St. Louis Cardinals for $24. He decided to not get it after all. After looking around the store, the young lady helping us said that the owner had dropped the price to $16. So a discount w/out the hassle! Cha Ching!!

We walked back to Margaritaville to catch a shuttle bus to Doctor’s Cave Beach. The wait was not too long, but within those 5 min or so, we did have a gentleman ask us if we wanted to take an excursion thru him. Even though we said no, he continued to ask. Thankfully the shuttle arrived and saved us!!

The fee to enter Dr’s Cave Beach was $5/per adult and $2.50/ per child. We also got an umbrella and 2 chairs. Grand total was $30! We were settled in right in front of the shoreline. What an awesome view!!!

My DS was shocked by the clarity of the water. DH and I would just tell him, “Oh, this is nothing sweetie! Wait ‘till you get to Cozumel! Now that’s beauty!!”

tony-jamaica.jpg

While snorkeling, he came across a small conch. He was so excited to add it to his growing collection.

tony-conch.jpg

But soon realized there was a snail inside!! So we released it back into the ocean. He did get scared when he saw the little antlers poking out!

tony-conch2.jpg

DH enjoyed a Red Stripe beer. I believe those were $4. There was a gentleman going around selling some Rum Punch for 2/$5. We couldn’t pass up on the offer!!

There was a man in the water trying to sell bracelets and large conch. I overheard him telling some teenage girls the meaning of the colors on the bracelet. I didn’t get to hear what all the colors meant, except for green. Of course he said that green meant for… and then he stuck his fingers up into his mouth and imitated as he was smoking a joint. The girls giggled and said no thanks. I just had to roll my eyes at him. Eventually a uniformed man, I assume the local authority came and escorted him out. 30 min later, he was back in the water amongst us.

There was a family next to us that allowed their kids to play with the plastic cups in which the Rum punch was served in. The Lifeguard constantly kept on asking them to not let the cups float away. It was as if he was talking to the wall, the mother never paid any attention.

There were several instances in which I started to burn/itch really bad. I wonder if they were “sea lice” that I had heard mentioned before??

Well, the time to leave had sadly arrived. It was 3:00, but we still wanted to do some shopping at the terminal shops before getting on. We were told to be back on the ship by 6:30 (got the time extended by 30 min for arriving late) We washed up and went outside to catch the shuttle outside. Thankfully we left early because it TOOK FOREVER to catch a shuttle!!! We waited for about 15-20 min with a group. When the shuttle arrived, the family pretty much filled it up. So we had to wait once more. The Hot Spot rep kept saying “It’s coming! It’s coming!” We chatted for a bit, but then it got really aggravating to stand in the heat and hear “It’s coming” for the last 40 min!!! Several people took a taxi and just paid the additional amount even though their trip back to the terminal was already included, but I was not going to pay an additional $20!!

Eventually a shuttle did arrive and we got back to the terminal around 4:30.

Since my son had loaded up the back pack full of shells, we got onto the ship and went to the room to leave our stuff there. The process to get on/off went fairly quickly.

We enjoyed the last hour shopping in the terminal stores.

We also got to enjoy a local high school band playing at the terminal.

Just as we were leaving to get back on, it started to rain!!

The vendors quickly gathered their belongings.

Having an early seating dining, we quickly headed to our cabin and got dressed for dinner.

We had a wonderful time at dinner and since we arrived late for dinner, we got out late.

So we headed straight to the theater room to get a good seat. I had no idea what show was going to be shown, but it was very crowded before 8:15. I just assumed it was because people were trying their luck in Bingo. We had pretty bad seats. They were pretty much all the way towards the back. I thought, ok, when everyone from Bingo leaves, we’ll move up.

Well, just to my surprise, it was the “Magic & Illusion” (w/ Lady Hellevi). I had heard it was a must see show, but I didn’t know it was showing tonight! No wonder the auditorium was jam packed!!

I’m not going to ruin it, so all I am going to say it, it was an awesome show!!

We finally called it a night and were greeted by a hanging Monkey this time!

Fabulous review! We're sailing on the Conquest in November so I'm really enjoying the details. Would you mind describing the Past Guest party in greater detail? We'll be attending for the first time. I don't know why I'm so excited about it but I am!

By the way, your family is beautiful!

We were on the Conquest 6/6/2010 and everything was good except the first elegant night. We had taken my DD and her DH and 2 grandkids, Rowdy 9 and Everette 6. Right off the bat, we were at seperate tables even though we had booked a year in advance. We were seated together and were told that the next night we would have our regular table. We get all dressed up and literally had no place to go. All 6 of us were at a table for 2. And then we were told if we would come back at 8 we could all sit together. I left in tears to go and try to reason with the maitre-d to get us together and it was like talking to a wall. I then went down to guest services and talked to another wall. I did find out my DH had already been down there to no avail.

I went back to our cabin, changed clothes and set out to find my family. My DD all went to the buffet, the boys were starving and we didn't eat that night. I wanted everything to be perfect for them and it was far from it. We did get a table the next night and had great wait staff who played up to the boys every night. It just hurt that as much as we have done Carnival, the 3rd time on the Conquest and it seemed nobody cared. The maitre-d was Hassan I think and he was a total uncaring jerk. I guess we were do for a screw-up and we got it.

We all enjoyed the rest of the cruise and for anyone going, use Peat Taylor tours in Jamaica. He was great. His son picked us up in a van, took us to Ocho Rios to a place called Blue Hole. Beautiful waterfalls with a rope swing in the trees and very deserted spot. I can highly recommend him without a doubt. He also gave us great stories about Jamiaca.

Thank you so much for your kind words! :D

We received the invite the morning of the party, I believe.

There was one for myself and one for my husband.

The kids did not receive one, as they were first time cruisers.

We took them with us and if they said that they were no allowed in, we would have not gone in then.

It was held from 5:00 – 5:45 in the theater room.

They had waiters going down the rows offering Hors D’oeuvres, champagne, beer, margaritas, and blue Hawaiians.

For the kids they had a delicious orange juice kind of drink, but it was bubbly, so it made it seem like they were drinking champagne or mimosas!

They were not stingy with the drinks, but I felt like they were with the Hors D’oeuvres.

The waiters with the drinks were constantly keeping around with their trays full of drinks and you would just swamp out your empty glass for a new one.

For the Hors D’oeuvres, it just felt like you got one of each and that’s it. No second round for them.

Of course the cruise director and captain were there and did a video presentation.

They also allowed the guest to go up on stage and dance.

Being a first timer, I really enjoyed it and truly look forward to attending a second one in the near future – on the Magic hopefully! :D

I'm surprised. I've never known of a family that had linked their booking numbers to not be seated at the same table. Could they not accomodate your family in Your Time Dining?

Sorry to hear. We had 4 couples on our 1st cruise and had all 4 cabins linked.

We had a table to accommodate the 8 of us and was great ocean view.

Possibly you didn’t have them linked?

Did you feel comfortable in Jamaica? I can't find an excursion my family wants to take, but we have been nervous about going it alone. But you say the hot shot shuttle was safe? Did a lot of passengers choose that? Was it right there at the cruise terminal? :)
