Pride 11/7 and 11/14 cruises cancelled - ship going to dry dock

Countless people have their vacations nixed at the last minute by weather, health problems, acts of god/nature whatever.

This is a LOT different than having your vacation altered by any of the above things that would be out of anyone's control, Carnival included.

I wouldn't expect anything from Carnival if I got sick or a hurricane blew through. But I sure would expect them to do a lot more than $50/pp if they voluntarily cancelled my trip.

Then you too would be sorely disappointed as a result of wildly unrealistic expectations.

I wonder how many people ever actually READ their cruise contracts?

What's unrealistic about expecting Carnival to at least honor prices and air change fees when they pulled a vacation away from people?

I spent 6 days in a row on the Splendor last year thanks to the swine flu and I was far from disappointed. My expectations are prefectly realistic, thank you.

I see cruisesonly.com still has the same prices we booked at, just a month later. We will most likely simply be moving our date out a month to early December at no loss. In fact, it will be a gain of $100 OBC.

Speaking of which, what exactly does that entail? Can it cover excursions? Drinks? The restaurant? First timer.

Since changing weeks (we were booked 11/14) isn't a viable option for us, we're now looking into an NCL cruise out of NY instead. Getting there will be more of a hassle than driving to Baltimore would be, since we live in South Jersey, and I'm looking into alternatives to parking at the port (at $30 a night! yikes!).

So I'm still bummed, but maybe we'll actually *like* NCL! :)

I read it. And I agree that LEGALLY, CCL owes us nothing.

But, as a first time cruiser, this measly $50 pp OBC offer just doesn't do it for me. In the end, I'm not the one that loses out though. You don't offer customers who had already booked and paid you compensation out of some sort of contractual requirement, you do it in order to build the brand...its called customer service.

The $50 OBC is certainly better than what I am contractually entitled to...I never suggested otherwise...but I do think that it is far from optimal customer service. I'm not saying I will never cruise CCL...I'm just saying it is less likely today than it was yesterday, and if I was a CCL employee or shareholder, I wouldn't want to hear 2-4,000 people saying that.

My understanding is that it covers anything onboard. And if you don't spend it, you get a check at the end of the cruise.

I don't understand how you would use a cruisesonly.com rate...you have to book it back through Carnival I think in order to get the $50 pp OBC, right?

Virtually everything you do/buy onboard goes on your onboard account, as does the auto tip of $10 pp per day. So while $100 is nice... it won't go very far, trust me. :)

Wife and I are going on Jan/2/11 on Pride which was originally scheduled for 2 weeks of dry dock 2 weeks after our cruise. I have read some C.C folks saying that Pride could use a little re-furb, such as old/saggy mattresses, old linens etc.

Does it make sense that this cancellation could be for mechanical reasons AND they will use the opportunity to do some updates? Sure hope so.

And by the way -I am always amazed by those who will always defend Carnival no matter what. Thats OK I guess but to Flame other C.C.ers who are expressing a valid point of view and have just just been disappointed and had their plans jerked around, well I would say maybe you have the problem? Just saying. This is not a criticism of Carnival. I am sure they do not want to ever cancel cruises that they have already taken reservations for.

They must have found something that is causing them to pull it into drydock early. It was originally scheduled for this in January. We are booked on the January 16th cruise and thought we were going to be the last cruise before drydock. The other day when we went on to check the price, we are booked early saver, we noticed that there is now an option to book January 23rd. I am sorry that you have to figure out something else. Please don't let this cause you not to cruise. You will definitely miss out.

I believe that Carnival sails from the NYC area - either from NYC or from Cape Liberty. This would involve a very early morning drive or a hotel room but not an airplane flight.

They sail out of Manhatten. We sailed on the Miracle 2 years ago.

I wonder if rather than a problem with the ship it might have been a problem at the dock with their scheduling or with their own equipment, forcing the Pride to dock earlier for ship maintenance.

Maybe Carnival was dealt a bad hand too.

Not making excuses for their actions, just conjecture.

For me, the $50 OBC would barely reimburse me for the trip insurance I had purchased...and if I rebooked, I'd have to buy new trip insurance.

You shouldn't have to purchase new insurance.......we cancelled our cruise and rescheduled and they just changed the date on our policy....

We were just on the Pride the week of June 20th. I have to agree, there were a few things that I noticed that I thought, well you can tell that dry dock is coming up. I am not going to flame anyone here. My cruise in January will be my 4th cruise. I would be VERY upset if I found out that my cruise has been changed even 4 months out. We usually book AT LEAST 13 months out and am ALWAYS so excited about going on it. PLEASE, do not let this get you down. I hope you are able to find another time frame to go on a cruise. They are GREAT.

Good luck on your new cruise plans. Have you looked into the park&cruise deals.

Stay123 and ParkSleepFly usually have good deals. At 30 a night it may be cheaper to stay overnight then to pay for parking for the week. We booked a hotel with parking for the week for our Pride cruise. Worth it.

Usually drydocks are scheduled far in advance so that no bookings are taken during that time....

something serious must have broken.....

things break....just ask my hubby who flies every week. At least once a month, a flight gets canceled due to maintenance.

Happened yesterday ....when he landed in Atlanta, his connection flight was canceled for maintenance....so he and 46 others had to fly standby.

5 hours later...and 3 tries...he finally got a flight to his destination.

Which was better than last month, when he was stuck in Atlanta for the day and finally got home after midnight (and that was only because there was one seat left and he is a Platinum "thingy").

If that seat had not been available...it would have been 4PM the next day....

how much OBC did they offer?

Bill

Thanks for confirming what others had said. I have heard that Carnival can actually do alot of sprucing up in 2 weeks.

So you're saying that in order to get the $50 OBC I have to spend $100 more booking through Carnival? I don't think so. The letter states "We will provide you with a $50 per person on board credit when rebooking any future Carnival cruise, departing prior to April 2012." I assume we get our money back for this cruise and can book this next one anywhere.

I guess these are all questions we'll have to ask when we call the number.

Just want to support those who are seriously disappointed right now, since the trip of their dreams just went up in smoke. Eventually they will plan something else, but they are certainly allowed some time to process this big let-down.

Sorry, guys.

Your $100 OBC is simply applied as a credit to your ship board account.

It can applied to anything like, Carnival sponsored excursions, casino, on board purchases, internet costs, tips, bar costs, etc. Most spend well beyond that amount.

I agree that's a very small compensation, especially since it's a port w/o other sailing options.
