Literary Lynne Posted July 8, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 8, 2010 Will be on the X Century in September and docking in Salerno. Have previously docked in Naples, so have been to Capri. Just wondering if it is worth exploring Salerno? Any other suggestions would be welcome too. Thanks :) Lynne

ddpe Posted July 8, 2010 #3 Share Posted July 8, 2010 The bigger attractions in the area are Amalfi and Positano. You can also go further south to Paestum to see some fantastic Greek ruins - very unheralded site. It was abandoned due to mosquitos instead of built over so the exterior structure of the temples is still pretty much intact. I would also vote for Ravello up the mountain side. Very picturesque town with some nice shops. Great for lunch with a view of the coast and Salerno.
ab0si Posted July 8, 2010 #4 Share Posted July 8, 2010 Salerno was heavily damaged in WWII but there are some interesting medieval sites/sights <grin> in the city. It was a major center of learning (medicine in particular) until the Spanish took over. Never the less, for anyone less geeky than I am (99.94%), Amalfi and Positino have more to offer. Literary Lynne Posted July 9, 2010 Author #5 Share Posted July 9, 2010 Thank you for your really helpful advice. Ab0si - we are pretty geeky, so if there is maybe a museum of medicine, we would be very happy. In fact, that's just what we did in Rouen (France)..:) Lynne
euro cruiser Posted July 9, 2010 #6 Share Posted July 9, 2010 The City of Salerno has a visitor's guide in English on their website. It's not great, but it's a start: http://www.comune.salerno.it/client/menu.aspx?menu=4048&parent=3912&stile=
