lorij1975 Posted July 17, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 17, 2010 I have often read of people leaving their room steward an extra tip on the first day and was wondering how much is standard and if it should be done every day or only if you request something over and above? PS--- We are a family of 4 (2 kids ages 11 & 14) going on a 5 night cruise and we will be doing the usual tipping on the s&s card. I was just wondering about the extras. Thanks is advance! firefly333 Posted July 17, 2010 #2 Share Posted July 17, 2010 I would only tip extra if they did extra work. For instance you are requesting them to keep your cooler full of ice all week. Otherwise, if you want to tip extra, Id do it in person.... so I know it went to my cabin steward, not his assistant.
MrPete Posted July 17, 2010 #3 Share Posted July 17, 2010 Zero. Unless you ask them to do something above and beyond their job, keep your cash.

I do at the end of the cruise if they were awesome....and they usually are. :) The tips that are added to my S&S are the only thing they get upfront. If I have any requests that they help me with they get tipped on those occasions as well. Everyone is different. Do what feels right to you. BlueJacketsFan1 Posted July 17, 2010 #5 Share Posted July 17, 2010 We always try to give the steward, waiter and asst. waiter a little something extra. But we don't it to them on the first night, we have always done it on last night on the ship. We don't want it to be a bribe to try and get better service, but a thank you for doing such a wonderful job. Everyone probably has a different opinion on this one though. woodey Posted July 17, 2010 #6 Share Posted July 17, 2010 I Give a Token of Appreciation of $20 the first day and ask them to fill my Ice Chest and keep it full ....if they do, I reward them with another Token at the End
ChefSusan Posted July 17, 2010 #7 Share Posted July 17, 2010 We always tip our cabin steward an extra $20-25. We will also sometimes tip our wait staff (if we do traditional dining) an extra $5-10, as well as slip something to the Maitre D' (that is if he stops by our table during the week). KruznKel Posted July 17, 2010 #8 Share Posted July 17, 2010 We usually give an extra $20 to the main steward and $15 to their helper near the beginning because we have the aft balcony wrap and always have tons of people out there with lots of left over stuff for them to clean up:D
SueG Posted July 17, 2010 #9 Share Posted July 17, 2010 I always toss the steward a TEN on the first night just to be nice. No other reason.
golfadj Posted July 17, 2010 #10 Share Posted July 17, 2010 You do not have to bribe the steward to do his job. If you think the service warrants it something at the end in addition to the auto tip would be nice.
Wennfred Posted July 17, 2010 #11 Share Posted July 17, 2010 For the purpose of this post, I am going to call the Steward "HIM" or "HE" . We never tip Him on day one, We do request extra pillows and the extra bucket of ice when we first meet him. I do ask on which island He will be getting off for a break, when I find out that he is going off, on the Eve prior I give him a $20. and tell him to Enjoy a few drinks on us. Also, its not about a bribe, its more of an appriecation on the job they have done for us so far. The more I win at the Casino, the more I give away. Wennfred Posted July 17, 2010 #14 Share Posted July 17, 2010 Same goes for our Waiters an Asst Waiter, we find out during dinner when they will be getting off the ship, and at that point we hand them a nice Tip, usually a 20.00 each and to go grab some drinks on us. The last thing you want is to be on the Non-Tipping Cheapo list thats posted in the Galley. Fred

I was shocked when I learned that on Costa the cabin stewards only get one day off the boat every 4 weeks or something like that. It was really bad!! My steward was working hard for a super rating so she could have an extra day off!! As for tipping if my steward has been amazing we will tip extra. Our Costa cruise (one mentioned above) or steward was so amazing that we gave her extra $ and we made sure we said fabulous things about her on the comment cards. I will confess for me the extra tip is based on how well they clean the room and how they treat my daughter. If they sneak her extra mints or make towel animals per her request you bet I'm going to give them extra money for making her cruise that extra bit special. The same goes for the waiter at dinner. :)

For the room steward duties, they get $7.00 per day from the wife and I. That is $49.00 per cruise or more since we only do 7 day or longer cruises. They make our beds and clean the bathroom. $49 seems adequate for that. Hours they work? Not my business. Money they make? Not my business. Days off they get? Not my business. maritaysa Posted July 20, 2010 #22 Share Posted July 20, 2010 On our last 7 day cruise, we tipped the room steward $25 and his helper $15. For the DR team, we gave the entire $40 to the head waitress thinking that she will give her helper her fair share. They seemed to get along well, so I hope that she did. We also gave the Maitre D $5. And we still weren't sure if what we gave was appropriate for everyone we gave to.
Nanaimobound Posted July 20, 2010 #23 Share Posted July 20, 2010 I always like to give a little extra. sometimes at the end sometimes at the beginning. i used to bring international phone cards and give them at the start of the cruise, and was always earnestly thanked for that gesture. Now people all have cell phones, so I give extra cash. It makes me happy to help them out a little. These people work very hard to make our vacation special, although can you imagine how tiring it is dealing with very rude snobby guests who think they are owed something every minute of the day because "they paid for a cruise"? I can afford an extra $20.00 to make someone's day who has taken good care of us for a whole week. We also always leave whatever extra alcohol or wine we have left for them with a note to enjoy with friends. We Always get a smile and big Thank you for that as well. megmno Posted July 20, 2010 #25 Share Posted July 20, 2010 I just figure that I won't really miss the $20 we leave the steward at the end of the week, and the extra money could really mean a lot to him. I mean seriously, I can blow through $20 buying trinkets at the gift shop without even thinking about it. But that same $20 might mean a lot of groceries to the steward's family back home.
